Title: JANE family Bodmin
Post by: elsie ellen on Wednesday 19 October 05 04:14 BST (UK)
Ann Symons Hugo married Phillip Jane in Bodmin in 1838.

Phillip died in Bodmin in 1877. On the 1861 census Ann's place of birth is given as St Columb, Cornwall and her age 42 years. In the 1841 census they are living in Lanlivery.  I do not have a copy of the 1851 census records so would appreciate if someone could look that up for me please..

Unfortunately, I have no other information about Ann.

As well, I would appreciate help to find out when and where she died. In the 1861 census the Jane family is listed as living at 4 Carninow Cross in the civil parish of Bodmin.

Thanks

Elsie

Hello Colin.

Thank you for your help with finding this information about my Ann.

I now know she lived at least 20 years after her husband and didn't remarry. The women on my maternal side have nearly all outlived their husbands!!!

Do you have any suggestions about how I can now go about finding out the names of her parents and any siblings?

I appreciate your assistance.

Hello again Elsie,

The marriage of Ann Symons Hugo and Philip Jane is referenced on
freeBMD as June 1838 Bodmin Vol9 p44; and LDS familysearch as 4 June 1838 Lanlivery Rural and shows Ann's father as William Hugo.

There is another reference on LDS familysearch for the birth of Ann Symons Hugo that says about 1813 with parents William Hugo and Jane Simons/Symons/Symonds.  This sounds correct to me as the mothers surname matches and if you disgregard the 1813 reference as this is only an approximation.

Again, I hope this helps.

Cheers, Colin

Me again...thanks to the information you provided I now have much more to work with.

I have searched the IGI index and tried the 1841 census return that is online.

In the 1841 census I can find a William Hugo of the right age (65 years) but the name of the wife is not Jane. Could she have died and he remarried?

Also is it possible to find out her sister's marriage details, if indeed she did marry? Her name was Elizabeth Hugo and she was born circa 1802.

Cheers

Elsie

I have just been revisiting this past posting and wish to thank everyone, belatedly,  for the information they found for me. Your help was, as always, appreciated. Must have been sidetracked to have missed this!   ::)

My apologies to all.

Hi Kris.

Thanks for your kind offer.  :) :) There are still many gaps...!!!

The surnames that I know I am chasing in St Columb are HUGO and SIMONS / SYMONDS / SYMONS, and it is possible that some MORLEN / MORLAIN family were in the area.

I am aware that the Simon's family had a connection to the Indian Queen Inn in St Columb.

Anne JANE's parents were William HUGO and Jane SIMONS. Jane was born about 1780 in St Columb to parents Francis Simons and Elizabeth Morlen / Morlain. I believe Jane married William HUGO in 1796 but don't know where. I am "assuming" St Columb, but would appreciate having that verified or cancelled out.

I would like to know if possible the death/burial details for Francis (b circa 1734) and Elizabeth SIMONS, nee Morlain, (b circa 1744).

William HUGO, b circa 1775, and the HUGO family are a complete mystery. Any snippets concerning William and the HUGO family would be more than I have been able to find thus far.

This is a big hoy, Kris!!!  ;)

OK Elsie,

I will see what I can spot.  ;)

Here is full details of the 1826 marriage provided earlier

Richard UDY Bachelor of St Issey = Betsy HUGO Spinster otp by Banns 20 Nov 1826. Both signed with their marks. witnesses Robt Kent and John Hugo

The parents marriage was in St Enoder

William HUGO Miller otp = Jenifer Jane SYMONS spinster of St Col Major by Licence 20 Oct 1797 St Enoder. Both signed (Jane signed as Jane Symonds) witnesses Richard ? and Richd [PD]oole

Baptised St Col Major _ parents William and Jane

John HUGO 7 Feb 1800
Betsy HUGO 9 Jul 1802

Now the register is not very good but I didnt spot anything else. (register awful, faded etc and not thoroughly studied) Thankfully it improved when we got to the forms in 1813 but nothing until I find your Ann

Ann HUGO 9 Jan 1820 parents William and Jane Hugo of Indian Queens Father Miller (sounds to me more like an area than the pub since William is a miller)

so wonder where they were for nearly 20 years  :-\ (some possibilities in IGI)

Cheers Kris  :D

There is a possible burial in St Enoder

Jane HUGO aged 50 of Trevarthen St Columb Major buried 29 Feb 1828 St Enoder

I do also note

Jane Murlin HUGO aged 18 of Trevarthen St Columb Major was buried 26 Jan 1828 St Enoder (I took a good look at around 1809 and no sign of a baptism in St Col Major)

Cheers Kris  :D

Kris..this is fantastic information.  ;D Thank you.

I have been scouring my map of Cornwall, poor tired thing that it is becoming, and I have noticed there is actually a place/area called Indian Queens. So could be either. Indian Queens might have been where they were living then, or Jane could have returned for the birth to her parent's posting house and inn, The Indian Queen Inn, located near the junction at Fraddon, at the road off to Newquay in the west. Indian Queens seems to be only about a mile, if that, from the actual inn. Something new I have learnt geographically.

Kris, I assume "By Licence" means Jane was under age at the time of her marriage to William Hugo?

The John Hugo's baptism you listed for Feb 1800....his baptism notes record that John is the son of William and Jane Hugo. Am I reading you correctly?

Armed with new information, I'll have a browse through the IGI. Fingers crossed.  :)

Now on the Symons I see

Francis SYMONS otp = Elizabeth MARTIN otp 5 Sep 1765 St Columb Major (unfortunately the original is missing so I cannot confirm her name. All there is is the 1881 transcript by Mr Arthur Jewers, to assist with entries from 1755-1780 and it says Martin)

Baptised St Columb Major - parents Francis and Elizabeth

Ann 8 Mar 1767
William 2 Apr 1769
Peter 21 Apr 1771
Francis 13 Jun 1773
Eliz 16 Jul 1775
John 12 Jul 1778
Jane 24 Apr 1780

Sorry, I can see no burials for Francis and Elizabeth in St Col Major. I think I have taken a pretty good look though some spots are not too clear. Do you havve any idea when they died?

Time to get away from this reader I am seeing double ......LOL

Will be back later if you have any questions.

Cheers Kris  :D

Timing.....I didn't realise you were back online.  ;D Sorry I really have to take my eyes away from screens for a bit but marriage was by 1 of two ways. Either by Banns, where the Banns of the marriage were read on three generally consecutive Sundays at least in one of the home parishes - usually the grooms -  prior to the marriage. The other way is by licence where with the payment of a fee a licence was granted and the marriage could take place immediately. The upper class generally preferred this method as it was a matter of status in that they could afford the fee, where other poorer folk could not. (though at times a marriages of poorer folk was by licence as for some reason they were in a hurry to tie the knot, (wishing to immigrate or baby about to arrive) In this case I suspect it was a matter of Status as William was a miller. The age of the participating parties would have no bearing on whether the marriage was by licence or banns.

Yes I found the three baptism in St Col Major. All list parents as William and Jane and I note John was a witness at the marriage.

Ahha Elsie,

William HUGO left a will  ;)

A new day,  ;D sometime overnight it hit me that of course, a miller, this man would have left a will

http://www.rootschat.com/links/02vt/

Death

HUGO William Mar 1/4 1848 St Col 9 44

Burial very hard to read

William HUGO buried 9 Jan 1848 St Col Major, Res - I think it says Union Square St Columb He was aged 70.

I haven't had any luck finding him in 1841.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kayhin/ukocp.html

Using the Cornwall Online Census Project to have a look about the area there are many families at Indian Queens but not William and no miller listed. I found many refs to Union Square also but alas no sign of William there either.  :'(

aha he is in St Kew with possible son Simon  ;)

HO107/152/10 Folio 9 Page 9
Calice
St Kew

HUGOE Simon 20 Y Ag Lab
HUGOE Lucy 20 Y
HUGOE Edwin 1 Y
HUGOE William 65 Yes Miller

Simon HUGO bap 14 Jul 1816 Kenwyn parents William and Jane.

(rounding down of ages in 1841) Also baptisms in St Austell I was looking at yesterday, listing a possible earlier son Simon among others. I also noted there is

Jane HUGO 1 July 1810 St Mewan parents William and Jenifer.

(Jane and Jenifer tend to be interchangeable names, and I noted at marriage Jenefer had been crossed out with Jane replacing it.) This may be the Jane who's burial I found yesterday in St Enoder. Perhaps the family moved around a bit, but would certainly be wanting to see this will.  ;)

All the Best

Oh Kris!  ;D

I'm trembling...this is just so awesome. I'm pinching myself to believe it's true!!! To wake up this morning to find your absolutely wonderful postings. You are a Treasure!

I have just emailed the Council to enquire how I can obtain a copy of William Hugo's will.

Not only his will, though, is catalogued. As one does, of course, I typed in a few other names just on the off chance, and up came details of wills for some other forebears! A veritable treasure trove. I will work my way through a few other names later this morning.  Thank you for guiding me to this fabulous site Kris. I'd never have found it without your help.

A wall is starting to crumble! Wow!!!!

Time for a cuppa. Then pen and paper to hand ...  Can't see much housework being done today.  ;)

Thank you so much for your wonderful help.  :)

Elsie

Hi Elsie,

Lovely to have made somebody's day.  Ooohhh Makes me feel good. ;D  ;D  ;D

Look forward to hearing more when you get the will

It is not listed on National Archives Site so as far as I know, you will need to fill out the forms and send by snail mail. They require a signature to supply docs.

Hope it is as good a find as it sounds  ;D
