Title: ABBS in Norfolk
Post by: AbbsONS on Thursday 01 January 04 15:23 GMT (UK)
Looking for any information no matter how small on the surname ABBS.

The ABBS One-Name Study has been going for about 2 years and I am compiling a database on ABBS information.

If you have any information or have any questions about the ABBS surname in Norfolk please reply.

There is a book available containing a transcript of Stibbard school's log book, for £10 from a lady from Norwich.  I know from flicking through this book that there are lots of references to Abbs pupils.

Details here :

Thank you for the information about the book.  Have contacted the editor and will pass details onto other researchers for this area.

Thanks

Hi,
I spotted a couple of Abbs familes in the Norfolk 1861 census whilst looking for Wickham. I noted down the page somewhere. Send me a private message as to whether you need these Abbs?
Is there a link to Abbs Cross Lane, in Hornchurch, Essex? Interesting question that I have never thought where the name comes from.
Best
Kevan

Hi

Whilst trawling the 1851 Durham census spotted a family of ABBS.  Not sure if you already have the details but thought best to post it just in case.

Details:

Mary               Wife, Married, 34                              Durham, Sunderland
Mary               Daug                 9, Scholar                Durham, Sunderland
Dorothy          Daug                 3,                            Durham, Sunderland
Address: 1 Vine Street (High Part of Moor), Sunderland
Ref: HO107/2397 Folio 190 Page 63

Hope this is of use to you.
Regards

Hi Sue,

The information is very helpful especially as I am unable to check through every census at present.

Thank you for posting the information.

My Name is Abbs & my Nanny used to live in Norfolk - my Aunt was an Abbs & is now a Dickens, but she's still there.

I live in Essex with my Mum, but my Dad lives in Bournemouth now with my step-mum - they're both Abbs too.

If there is any more info, I would like to trace my family tree, but I don't know how to go about it!

Hi Jo,

Thank you for posting your message.  The first step in tracing your family history is to note down all the details that you already have.  Also ask your relatives questions (Something I wish I had had the chance to do before my grandparents died).  Ask them what they remember when they were little and any people, do you have any photos, diaries etc which may help.  Sometimes there is a story passed around which may not seem important at the moment but could be a lead in the future.

I have a simple questionnaire which I can send you to help you get started.

The majority of the details I have on ABBS is pre 1901 mainly due to the fact that there is a 100 year rule on some records.  Though I do have some details post 1901 and am in contact with other ABBS researchers.

Please feel free to contact me direct on :  abbs@one-name.org
then I can help you in much more detail.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Cheryl
