Title: Face at the window.
Post by: Lesanne on Sunday 23 October 05 20:24 BST (UK)
The face at the window is the Grandmother of these children.
It is the only record of her I have.
Would it be possible to isolate, and make her clearer.

            Many thanks,   Lesanne.

Hi Lesanne & Annie,
                                Can you rescan the
window pane with the face at a far greater resolution.
The small picture is only 12k in size & also cuts off some of
the hair etc.
      In aniticipation.
Tomkin.

That's clever. Is that sort of a mirror image.
I suppose her lefthand side of the face is in the shade.

Thanks for trying Tomkin, it is quite difficult to know what to achieve
if there's nothing else to go by.

Hi all,

What tomkin means is can you scan the photo again, but only that little bit?

If you do a preview scan (most scanners do this) then you can see the photo on screen, and with a selection tool, you can draw a box around the bit that you want.  Once you've done that, find where you change the scanning resolution (it will be in a menu somewhere) and change the resolution to maybe 600 or 800 dpi (tomkin, you may have a different idea about what res would be best!).

Then, just scan it, and the little bit you chose will be the only bit the computer scans!  It will be a larger picture and a larger file size than the little one that's currently on the board.

Did that help?  ;D

Hi Annie, Lesanne & Prue,
Annie I can't believe that you
haven't got a scanner.I thought i was the only one working
with ancient equipment & I have got one.Drop broad hints at
xmas. ( Nooo! I'm not going to buy you one)
Prue, I was just trying to compose a method that would
explain ( it could have taken a long time) when you did it
brilliantly. It all depends on the quality of the original. I would do exactly
as you said. first at 150d.p.i. then save it to file, naming it scan 1.
Then do it again at 300d.p.i and save as scan 2.Repeat at 450 d.p.i
& 600 d.pi.. Open all 4 in your photo software and see which gives
the best result( or post all 4 and let us see.)
Anyway Russell Crowe is just about to kill the baddie Emperor,
So ta ta for now.

Hi Lesanne,

No!! is the quick answer  ;D

Your picture is only 19kb in size - we would like one with 200kb to get much out of the window!
It looks fine on the computer - but not when put into photo software.
If you scanned it a 600pbi - don't then reduce the image size down to much to send.

Where is Annie when you need her! ;D

Cheers

Hi Lesanne,

You can do it!!

Annie has told you fine - when you said you tried 700 - what in your scanner said it was to big??
If you are able to move/insert a resolution try the largest that you can - for the small area of window - then do not alter it to put on here - it will not be more than 300kb.

By the way just click on Guys address - it will open in a new window - it's better than I could get from your very small picture.

Go on it will be worth it in the end - honest!

Cheers

Keith

Title: Re: Face at the window.
Post by: Keith Bateman on Monday 24 October 05 23:03 BST (UK)
Right - if it said it was to big - thats great!!

It means it is more that 300kb

If that was for the whole of the photo - crop it to just the window part - (can you crop?) - then it will be less than 300kb - but you might have to rename it - ass this site might remember the original name.

If it was just the window - even better - with your picture in your picture viewer (Photoshop or whatever) hover your mouse on image tab along the top - a window will open with choices - choose resize.

When that opens it will give you a choice to resize in Pixels - not sure what will be there - but alter it to a slightly smaller number - then close and resave.

Hope you can understand than ramble.

Awaiting with baited breath!!  ;D

LOL Lesanne and Annie, a right pair you are  ;D

You're doing well Lesanne, step by step you are getting there!

So, now you have scanned your photo to a high resolution.  I am guessing you have scanned the whole photo, and now have it your imaging program (Photoshop, Paint, whatever).   What Keith said about it being a BIG file is good!!  We want it big!!

If that's the case, all you need to do now is get your selection tool which usually looks like either an arrow, or a square with dotted lines, and draw a square around the face in the window.

Now, while the square with dotted lines is still sitting there around that bit of the photo, go to your menu bar, and find where it gives you an option to "crop".  On my Photoshop program, it's under "IMAGE - CROP".  Click on "crop" wherever it is, and what you should end up with is the rest of the photograph has disappeared, and only the face in the window is left on your screen.

Go to the FILE menu, and choose SAVE AS.  give it a name, and then save it somewhere.

Then have a look at its properties.  I think you can right click on the file in a PC, and click the file once and choose "Command-I" in a Mac, to get this info.  It will tell you what sort of file it is (whether JPG, TIF, or something else) and also how big it is (e.g. 250kb, 1mb etc.).  Before you post the photo on the board, come back and tell us what this information is.  We can then judge if it's ready to be posted, or if you need to make further changes.

I hope I made sense  ???  ???  ???

Good luck!!  Am now determined to have you succeed whether you like it or not!!  ;D

Post by: tomkin on Wednesday 26 October 05 23:04 BST (UK)
Hi Lesanne,
I have just popped onto the Epson website and
looked at the manual for your scanner. Of course the terminology
is different to my scanner. The cropped area that PrueM mentioned
is called the Marquee by Epson.(I always thought it was a big tent)
See if you can find that description in your instruction book.
When you have cropped or Marqueed (if that isn't a proper
word then it ought to be) the area that you are going to scan will be
shown as a dotted square. The dots will seem to move. That shows that the area is active.
On your screen should be a menu for your
scanning options. on the left hand side will be the word"resolution"
At the side of that will be an oblong box. this is where you alter the scanning resolution. There will be a figure in there already. It may be
75, 150, 300 or some such figure. At the right of the box is a menu
arrow. if you click on that, a menu will appear giving a range of resolutions, i.e. 75, 150 300 etc. Select one of those and you will scan
at that resolution. At the right hand side of the oblong is d.p.i.
All that means is dots per inch. When you have scanned the area
covered by the Marquee (back to tents again) you will be given the
option to save to file. As I said previously, Scan at 75 and call it scan1,
Next scan at 150 and call it scan 2, and so on.
On my old scanner I could alter the resolution by typing in the figure or use a slider to increase it by any amount from 1 to 9,600d.p.i
I must admit that I have hardly used my new one so I do not know
what it's capable of.( I nearly bought one of yours but I got a new one
from Canon via e-bay at a ridiculously low price)
Remember, Take it a step at a time.We all learn by trial and error.
Tomkin

Now, I saved this on my desktop and is now a PDF file  ???
This won't transfer to Irvan, Paint or anything else that I can crop or cut or marquee.

Hi Lesanne,

                     Oh dear,
P.D.F. stands for Portable Document format.
This is a system for the electronic distribution of documents.
To be able to read a p.d.f. file you need Adobe Reader.
I often download brochures of items that I am thinking of
buying. These brochures are in p.d.f.  I can then read the brochure
on my computer without having to go to a shop to obtain one.
Recently I downloaded the brochures for all the Toshiba D.V.D &
V.H.S players so that I could check certain specifications.
This is a long winded way of saying that we will have to start from scratch. Unfortunately Epson will not let me download the
brochure of your scanner(p.d.f. file). I have to read it on line.
P.D.F is a document file not an image file like J.P.E.G
PrueM Help!!!!! where are you when I need you?
Tomkin
P.S  we will have you working for Microsoft by the time we
have finished with you.

Oh sorry!!!  I was in bed - on the other side of the world, you know  ;D

I can't find the manual for your model of scanner, but it sounds to me like there must be a step in there where you can choose the format of the file you are creating.  That is, instead of a pdf file, you can select from a number of different types such as tif, txt, and jpg.

See if you can locate the menu where you get to choose the file format, and if there is a jpg option there.  I guarantee there will be!  :D

Then, see if you can find somewhere you can choose to do a preview scan.  This is where the scanner does an initial quick scan, and shows you what it's scanned, so that you can choose only a bit of the object to do the final scan on.  On the scanners I've used, there is a button that says "preview".

After you've done a preview scan, you should be able to choose all the other options like select an area to scan, choose a file type, choose where to save it, change the resolution etc.

Hi PrueM,
That's the online instructions that I have been reading.
I still prefer to download it onto my computer (P.D.F file, Lesanne)
But for some reason Epson will not allow me to.
Having read through it, I do not think it is user friendly
for a beginner. First thing to do is find out if Lesanne has the manual
so we can go step by step.
Unfortunately several urgent matters have arisen which
will need my attention ( family bereavement) Also I expect to be without a computer from this weekend for some time.
Lesanne have you got an instruction book? ( No! not on flower
arranging. On the 2480 scanner)

Hi Lesanne,
I shall have to be quick before my computer throws
another wobbly.
1) Have you got an instruction book for your scanner?
2) what software do you use, to make your scanner available?

Looking at your post image, doesn't look like that on mine  :-\

Aol I think is internet
When you want to use the scanner you
will probably use an imaging software like Photoshop,Elements,
Irfanview or Serif Photoplus to open it.
In short how do you use your scanner with your computer?
How do you get your scanner to work on your computer.
Just describe how you get to the screen where you said "thats it"
Imagine that you have just turned on your computer and want to
scan a photo.

Walk into my garden. Grab a handful of beautiful yellow
daisies (some one once told me that their posh name was
Dandy o' Leon ) Walk back into the house, empty nearest jamjar
of the mornings tea. Half fill with water from sink.
Throw flowers into said recepticle. Place on mantlepiece.
People will enter the house and stand there speechless at the
beautiful spectacle.
        Flower arranging the Tomkin way.
Try it keith, don't be frightened.

Thanks Lesanne.
Turn on your scanner etc. until you see that Menu.
At the top where it says full auto mode you will see a V. Click on
that and a drop down menu will appear.
Click on professional mode and the you should now see the image that I posted which shows the resolution settings etc.
If you want to change back to full auto mode, click on the V and select
full auto mode and you will go back to where you started.
Try it and tell me if you have any difficulties.Look at my previous
image and  make sure they are the same.

You see. I told you that you were clever.
Now where you see the word resolution, you should see a number.
At the side of that number is another V.  Click on that and another menu
will appear giving you a choice of resolutions. They will probably be
75, 150 , 300, 600 etc.  Make a note and tell me what they are.

Post by: tomkin on Saturday 29 October 05 17:55 BST (UK)
Lesanne, Calm down don't get too excited. I am trying
to go slowly, step by step. What do you mean preview??
Why have you gone there?.

Anyway if you scan at 50 dpi then the image will be coarse.
The higher the resolution the finer the scanned image will be.
This will depend on several factors such as the quality of the original
image. The problem is that the higher the resolution the larger the file becomes.
But first you have to master the marquee tool.Read my previous posting.
If I were you I would scan at 75 -100 dpi. so you will have to set that in
the resolution box
The picture should appear showing the window etc.
Put your mouse cursor on the top corner of the window pane where
the face appears. Press on the left mouse button and keeping it pressed
( the cursor should have changed to cross hairs +)  Drag the crosshairs
to the opposite corner of the pane. A dotted box should have appearred
which totally surrounds the pane.Release the mouse button and the box
will remain. It seems to blink slightly. This shows that it is an active area.
The rest of the picture should darken showing that it is inactive.
Try it. let me know what happens. We have nearly finished

Hi Lesanne,
Lets step back slightly. Put your photo on the platen and click preview.
My fault,I was jumping too far ahead. The full picture should appear.
We are then interested in scanning the face at the window.
Follow the steps in my previous posting from " put your mouse
cursor on the top corner.......
When you have mastered that you will be able to do anything.

Hi Lesanne,

I think tomkin has had to go for a lie down in a darkened room.

We were up to resizing your photo after using the double-end arrows to mark the area you want to scan - when you have done that, alter the resolution.

You say it says 10 mins - try another resolution - (just to see if they all take 10 mins!!!)
Making sure that you are only going to scan part of the picture - not the whole thing.
I have a different scanner so it will work slightly differently - but very similar!
It should only take 30 seconds to scan the small window you want - at nearly all resolutions

Let me know how you are getting on.

Cheers

Keith

P.S. please do not read anything on the "free webspace" page of this site - someone is trying to help me put my website back running properly - it's taking ages!!

YOu have the patience of a saint.  Truly!

Have a look at your puter.  The box bit, not the monitor.  Is there anything written on the box?  Like Compaq, Gateway, HewlettPackard, Macintosh, Unisys, Dell....and there might be some numbers as well.

Also, when you first turn the puter on and it starts up all the Windows programs (I'm assuming here that it's not a Macintosh, as then you'd not have Windows) what does it say about the version of Windows it's using?  For example, mine says "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional".

Hello Lesanne,
Well, I thought the operating system (Windows XP) might give us a clue as to why the scanner is saying it's going to take so long!!  But I don't think that's the problem.  Maybe someone more computer minded can help out here!
I think you are doing the other steps right, in terms of selecting the area you want to scan, and changing the resolution.
I'm stumped  ???  Going to make a cuppa!  When I come back I expect to see this problem fixed!!  ;D  ;D  ;D

Hi Lesanne,

You should chose what resolution first, try 300dpi first time - making sure "Document Size" hasn't been set to anything large by you.
Also make sure that the "Target Size" tab has nothing set in the small window as per photo below.
As I have said it is not my scanner - so I am just reading the instrustions myself - without actually being able to put them into practice.
"Preview" is the actual process of scanning - so if the resolution etc are set too large - a huge file can be created.

Try that way again - see what happens  ;D

Cheers

Keith

You save the picture by right clicking and use "save as" to your folder on the harddrive (using a name you will remember). Then from this page in "additional options" use the browse button to find the picture you have just renamed - and click OK.

Now - I am asking myself - WHY does she want to know that!  ???

Lesanne,
Get the scanner info page up on the screen, then press the "Windows" key and the "print screen" key.  If you then go to MS Word or an imaging program, you should be able to then paste what you copied when you pressed "print screen".
Then, save the MS Word document or image, and try to post it on this board as an attachment.
Let us know how you go!!  I know that's another thing for you to try to work out, but perhaps it might give people the clue they need to sort this out!!

If you get the "preview scan" to work - then you must see the whole picture - including the window.

Then put your mouse over this picture and do the altering of the picture with your mouse by using the "double ended" mouse to adjust the lines around your photo to include just the window.

DON'T Press SCAN

Now go to resolution and alter this to 150 - it might give you the "Image Memory size" somewhere - this should be about 800kb - but anything so long as it is not 800mg!!

Now press SCAN!!

Wonder what will happen?? ;D

Cheers

Great now we can move onto the next step. Once you have done your preview, Click the  Zoom Preview button to zoom in on a selected area of the image. Use a marquee to select the part of the image you want to zoom in and then click the zoom button. An enlargement of the selection appears in the Zoom menu, allowing you to see the effects of your settings in more details.

OK, We have gone all out now, we have got our hands on an Epson scanner and it uses the same software as yours. soil we are in the middle of setting it up now. So we might take about half hour to figure it all out. So if you have to go to bed, no worries, We will knock out a tutorial for you.

Yes I will still be here, trying to figure out how to use this scanner. This scanner we have a loan of is an Epson Perfection 2580 Photo which is the next model up from yours but will do exactly the same.

Songs of the face at the window ........... !!

When I'm calling you-oo-oo oo-oo-oo!
You will answer too-oo-oo oo-oo-oo!
That means I offer my help to you to be your own.

If you refuse me, my computer will be blue
And waiting all alone;
But if when you hear my help call ringing clear,
And I hear your answering echo, so do not fear
Then I will know our toil will come true,
You'll be happy with me, I'll be happy with you!

Pretty good huh??

The best way to scan your photos is straight from your graphics software. I have done this step by step using IrfanView but most graphics software will do the same. If you haven’t got IrfanView you can get it from this link
http://www.irfanview.com/

OK, lets start by opening IrfanView. When you have IrfanViw open, go to File/ Select TWAIN Source. This will look for your Scanner.

You should get another dialog box open which shows all the TWAIN devices connected to your computer. Select the “EPSON Perfection…” Then click Select.

Now you go to file again and select Acquire/Batch scanning.

A new window opens asking for the Acquire Method. Make sure that the first two radio buttons are selected and click OK.

The next window to open will be your scanner settings. You may get one of two windows open. If the following window opens, go to the Mode drop down window and select Professional Mode.

The following window opens, and then set the resolution to 300dpi and Click Preview.

Now you drag your crosshair cursor over your target (in your case, the face in the window) Then Click Zoom.

Once the scanner has finished its preview Scan, a new window opens and you should see the targeted area you selected zoomed up nice and big.

Now you can set your resolution higher if you want to, I used 600dpi to see what would happen. Then select Scan. Once the scanner has done its job it will disapear and the scanning process is finished.

There is no Step 7 by the way. I just made a typo.

If you ask Bob very nicely with sugar on top, he just might break the steps down to little pictures like mine. One more thing, go through the same steps again but before you do your final scan, bump the Resolution up to 1200dpi and see what happens.

I think I will have to do a step by step tutorial on saving with Irfanview so you can post images for restoration. The Big version is so compressed by jpeg that it goes all blocky or pixelated when you zoom in on it. This is a problem that a lot of people seem to have. I'm no expert on Irfanview, so it may take me a few hours to get the hang of whats going on. This will have to be another topic because this one is a wopper. It was started on the on: 24 October it has up to this posting 161 Replies and almost 1400 viewings. This is getting almost as big as the censuswack.

Well done to you both - Lesanne & deadants!!  ;D ;D

Nice surprise this morning to wake up to a large picture of Gran at the window.

Just a thought deadants - when I use my old scanner with Paints Shop Pro - I can only save the file to "jpg" - when I use Photoshop I can save with lots of choices.
I have just done one picture doing exactly the same things in both - the jpg was 2.8mg the Tiff was 28mg - so I guess a lot depends on the extra sotware you use. I knew jpgs compressed the file but did not realise that much.

Might put something along those lines in your fabulous tutorial.

Once again - well done to both of you - and Annie for the poem!

Cheers

Keith

I have just posted on the web space post for Bob, a very sugary please can we have a pictorial  ;D for all of us who just need simple pictures. Which I imagine take the longest to do, so much more work.
If I knew "what" was needed to make it, I would willingly lend a hand, scan, puta.

have been avidly following granny face at the window dialogue...probably one of the many folks logging in each day to see what happens next.......
Leasnne glad you have finally got to grips with your scanner..well done.
Deadants, Keith and Pru....you are all stars.
Had a go at the original inbetween reading posts..granny seems to be holding a hankerchief but I had a bit of trouble defining ...also put too much hair colour around left had side of face.
