Hi Onecoat!

It looks like the 3rd Dragoon Guards !

http://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armyunits/britishcavalry/3dg.htm

It doesn't show they were in India - but he could have moved to another regiment as he was an NCO and they did a fair amount of moving around - but you said he was home before the Boer War - I think your next step is to try and get his records !!

Hi Onecoat!

Officers and Soldiers pre 1921

Because of bombing in 1940 only about 25% to 30% of soldiers' records from the period 1914-1920 have survived. The remainder can be found at The National Archives:

I have just seen your post but as it is now 10 years ago I wonder if I will get any response!
My Great Grandfather was Thomas Mansell Miles from the line of his first wife Emily nee Rigney I have a lot of his history and always search for more.    Here is hoping this will actually reach you.  I have never used Roots forum before.  Best wishes anyway.

Welcome

There is a recruit called Tom Miles in Aldershot serving in the 3rd Dragoon Guards. This is on Findmypast's 1871 index. I cannot find his service record, nor even the 1891 census mentioned ten years ago.

They do not appear to have served in any campaigns while he was serving with them.

1220 TSM T Miles of the 3rd DGs was awarded a Long Service Good Conduct medal in 1889/1890

Thank you for your early response, much appreciated.  Every little bit is important and can lead onward.  I am hoping that others in the wider  family will pick this up , especially if they can given me info. on Tom's first wife who is my Great Grandmoither.  Emily( maybe Emilia ) Rigney. I cannot locate where she was born yet but probably Ireland.  Her father was William, a sister was called Charlotte.
Thomas Mansell Miles was born 9 Jan 1853 in Reigate, Surrey.
He signed up for 12 years Army Service with the 3rd Dragoon Guards  at Aldershot Barracks on 6 May 1871.  He was 18 yrs old, 5 ft 7 3/4 ins tall, of fair complexion, grey eyes and light brown hair.  His trade to date was as a grocer.
There are 2 separate marriage certificates for his marriage to Emily Rigney:
11 June 1876 in St Mary's Church, Athlone according to rites of Roman Catholic
11 Nov 1879 in  St James's Church, Dublin  according to the rites of the Church of Ireland
Children:  May Josephine Miles  1877
Thomas Miles  Oct 1880 to 8 April 1881 - buried at British Military Graveyard, Ballincollig,
George Philip Miles  3 Jan 1882 to 27  May 1962
Emily Ellen Mary Miles 3 Sep 1887
Mabel Alice Miles  1885 to 1967
Stations   09.05.1871 to 08.10.1884  England and Ireland
              First term ended. Re-engaged 2 May 1882
sailed on MS Jumna. Disembarked Bombay 7 Nov 1884
09.10.1884 to 06.01.1891  East Indies (Muttra, Meerut, Rawalpindi

Oophs - pressed a button too soon.
I have a lot more about Great Grandad after he left the Army and became a Publican first in Canterbury and then in Dover at The Falcon.
His first wife Emily died in Muttra about 1888 and he remarried Mary Ann Hilton and began his second family.
Anyway, hopefully this may lead to more info.
Best wishes and thanks
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

I am very sorry but your reply to Onecoats post has sadly bounced back to us.  It looks like Onecoat has changed her email address within the last 12 months and sadly we do not know what the new one is :'(

We do check members emails although some posts are upto 12 years old and so long as there is no note underneath the profile name everything should be working ok.

Old members do pop back up on a regular basis so fingers crossed onecoat gets to read your reply.

Kind Regards

Sarah

Thanks for that.  I will go back on that birth date for Mabel.   Actually one of her sons is alive and living in Australia. I had the pleasure of meeting her grand daughter and one great grand daughter for the first time when they were visiting Scotland.
All the best
Margaret
