I’m looking for William Hodder b. 1817/1820 Yeovil and wife Jane (Vagg) Hodder m. 1842. Their son Charles Hodder b. ca. 1843 Yeovil.

Since Charles is with this family in 51 listed as nephew James must be Jane's brother not father as I wouold have otherwise assumed - shows you have to be careful jumping to conclusions :D

I don't have anything else on Jane Vagg other than her name. I'll see if I can get more. Probably born Somerset, maybe S. Petherton like her brother James? I'll check.
Thanks for the 1841 Hodder. I didn't have it yet. Moulton (often misspelled) is my great great grandfather. I do have his sister as Melina. Harriett spelled it with two t's.
Looks like now I know who Jane Vagg's parents were.

If Charles is with his Uncle in 1851 these may be relevant.
Unfortunately they don't tell us the age at death which would probably clinch it

Hi, I don't have any information re your topic but whenever I see the name Vagg and the place Somerset together I have to ask about my elusive 4x's great grandmother Rebecca VAGG. Rebecca was the 2nd wife of James Wines, they married 14th Feb 1806 in Sth Petherton and together had 8 children to add to the 4 children from his 1st marriage to Hannah Clark. Rebecca died 9th March 1860 aged 82 making her birth year C1777. Any information re Rebecca Vagg would be much appreciated. I have been chasing her for about 10 years now without much luck.

Dear Trisha & Jan, thank you both so much for your invaluable help! I feel like a bit of a dill; I have looked at the 1851 census for Rebecca in the past with no luck. Amazing what "fresh eyes" can do. I have not had access to the 1841 census so that is a thrill too. Everything fits Susannah AKA Susan married John Ireland in 1839, she died young aged 30, I didn't have children for them up until now. The only thing which doesn't seem to fit is the age of Jacob in the 1841 census; he was born 1815, baptised 1817 and died aged 65 in 1880 which means he would have been 25 or 26 in 1841 not 20.

That's fine Anne.
Ages of adults on the 1841 census are rounded, not exact. Anyone aged from 15 to 19 is listed as age 15, anyone from 20 to 24 is shown as 20, etc.

I don’t know if you are still looking or interested but I live in South Petherton, in a Georgian Cottage once occupied by the Vagg family. John Vagg and Harriet Vagg who had children George, Elizabeth, Mary, John, harry, Laban, sarah and Mary E. When Harriet died, John later married Alice who I believe was a White previously. These records and accounts date back to around 1801.
