Hi,
I have some info on Geoge Powlesland - although some of it is confusing
He married Susanna Marks of South Tawton in 4th July 1849
I think that they had 4 children:-
Harriet [my great grandmother] b 2nd April 1849
Mary, Elizabeth and Samuel
The 1861 census shows a Mary Ann [aged 11], Harriet [aged 8] and elizabeth [aged 6] living with William and Mary Powlesland in South Tawton - no sign of George !
Do you know any more ?
David Stokes
-
Hi David, i have plenty more information on the Powlesland family.
George and Susanna had 13 children.
One of their children was :
Eliza Powlesland born 5/10/1850, she was my G G Nan and she married George Gillard.
The marraige details i have for George and Susanna are: they were married in South tawton 4/7/1843....me and another contact have their marraige certificate. You say they married in 1849 ?
There were a couple of George and Susanna Powlesland families, do you have Harriets Birth cert. If you do have any certificates for anything for this family it will help us make sure that we are tracing the same family.
My computer time is limited today (kids and hubby) my time is during the week and during the day.
Tomorrow i can let you know what i have on them.
Hope to hear from you soon

Hi again, i think the 1861 census info you gave in your message is a different family. The birth years are slightly different to the birth years i have.
I think i have also come across this family before, i'll check and see.

I have families for the above that were married.
Does this look like your family ?
What other info do you have on this family?
Hope to hear from you soon

Hi David, just found the 1861 census that you were on about, they are not the same family, this William might turn out to be a brother to George.
On the 1881 census, if you look at the census page you will see that William lives a couple of doors away from George, they're living in Addiscott.
This is why i wanted to know if anybody had access to the 1831 census, to see if they were together as brothers.

Hi Caz
Thanks for info - I will follow this up when I have time.
What is your interest in the Powlelands.

Hi David, i've just checked my tree and i dont have a Nellie Harris, where does she fit into the Powlesland family.
CAZ
-
I've had a chance to check the info.
Yes we are looking at the same family.
I had mis-read George and Susanna's m cert - it is 1843.
My G grand parents were Harriet nee Powlesland and William Curtis
My grandmother [ellen curtis] was brought up by her aunt Elizabeth nee Powlesland and John Cooper in Sticklepath - [I have photos of them]
Samuel Powlesland married Elizabeth, and I new their daughter Nellie who married Albert Bowden - they also lived in Sticklepath.
Their son Norman Bowden is still alive and I am in touch with him.
I also remeber Nellie Harris who also lived in Sticklpath, but do not know exactly where she fits in, other than that she was a cousin of my grandmother.
With regard to my own family - William Curtis and Harriet nee Powlesland had five children - who were all born at Black Torrington.
William Curtis was a coachman for the local doctorbut died aged 38. On his death the family was dispersed.
The children were:-
Mary Matilda Curtis b1873 d 1933
Richard Curtis b 1874
Clara Anne Curtis b 1875 d 1938
Ellen Curtis b 1883 d. 1957
John Curtis b 1885 d 1965
On William's death, Harriet and the eldest child Mary went to Exeter to live with Harriet's elder sister Mary [who was married to..... Hutchins.
RIchard and Clara went to Bideford to live with Luxtons
Ellen and John went to Sticklpath to live with harriets younger sister Elizabeth [and John] Cooper.
I do have further info. if you are interested.

Hi David, yes it is definately the same family, i do have some of the above information you mention in your last message.
I'd be very grateful for any other information you have, do you have any certificates for this family, i have some in my folders, not sure what i have.
Are you related to Shelagh ?, im in touch with her on another site, and she said that her brother was doing the family tree and she has gave nearly the same info as you, and she said that her brother is in touch with Samuels Grandson.

Hi David, in your last message you say that when William Curtis died his family were dispersed, you say that Harriet (wife) and the eldest daughter Mary went to live with Harriets elder sister Mary Hutchins.

Do you know his first name (Hutchins), where and when he was born. Do you know when Mary married him, im wondering if George Lethbridge was a first husband and this Hutchins was her 2nd marraige ? Any idea's !!
Do you know when and where William Curtis was born and when he died.

Caz,
Sorry not to have been in touch for so long - I'm afraid work gets in the way !!
not much Powlesland news
I have fond out that the NELLIE HARRIS that I referred to was nee Powlesland, and that she was my grandmother's cousin.
I met her as an elderly lady in the '60s , she lived in Sticklepath.
My g. m. was Ellen Curtis nee Powlesland the dau. of Harriet P.
Any thoughts ?
I am trying to contact Nellie Harris' dau. called Maureen Silliphant
who I last heard lived in Leicestershire.
I have also written to Norman Bowden, Samuel Powlesaland's grandson;
if I get any news I will let you know.
Regards,
David

Morning David, nice to hear from you again, i thought you'd disappeared...ha ha ha.
I've asked Dawn to have a look at this thread to see if she has any ideas as to who C. J. Powlesland could belong to and also who Nellie Harris (Nee Powlesland) could be the daughter off. I've had a look on my tree and i dont have either of these names, but then Dawn and me are still researching this family.
Do you have your Family Tree on any sites that Dawn and me could access to view, just makes things a little easier when looking for people.
If you send me a personel message with your email address i can send you the link to my Tribalpages, that way you can view who Dawn and me have and hopefully help fill in some gaps, also i can scan the Certificates etc that we have and email them to you.....hopefully...my computer does'nt always send emails though !!

Morning David,
Dont mean to sound like im being nosey here, but how did you get hold of this box that belonged to C J Powlesland, it might help us to find who he was and who his parents were, Dawn and me have been trying to find this person, there is a possibility that he was : Clifford J(cant remember) Powlesland, and there is somebody on Genes who has this person in their tree, Dawn has contacted them but i dont think she has had a reply as yet.

Caz,
Thanks for messages>
In reply:-
I think that Norman Bowden is the son of Ellen c1891 Powlesland.
I met her many years ago as an old lady. She was known as Nellie and was married to Albert Bowden: they lived at Sticklepath nr. Okehampton.
A children we often used to visit various people in Sticklepath which is where
Elizabeth Powlesland c. 1860 lived with her husband John Cooper.
My grandmother Harriet Powlesland's dau. Ellen Curtis was brought up by Elizabeth and John Cooper - I have photographs.
Nellie Harris [nee Powlesland ] who I have previously referred to also lived in Sticklepath.
With regard to the box, I got it thro' my mother: I suspect that it was Clifford J
Powlesland because of the Okehampton [Sticklepath] connection: as yet I have no proof, but when I here from Norman Bowden perhaps he will be able to confirm the connections and give me details of Nellie Harris.
With regard to youe query of 28th November [sorry for the delay !!] Mary and George Lethbridge were the witnesses at Harriets Marriage to William Curtis on 1st July 1873 at the church of St. Mary Arches in Exeter.
This m. cert refers to harriet as 24 and William as 21.
I have not been able to confirm his birth date, but he died on 11th May 1891 at Black Torrington aged 38 - I cannot find his birth at all around 1852 - 53 but will keep trying.
My direct e-mail is MODERATOR COMMENT: email address removed to avoid spam and other abuses. Please use personal message system to share email addresses. Thank You and I live in Cambridgeshire, although brought up in Devon.
