Hi Wings,
Cannot help you with the where abouts of your Gt grandfather whilst on board the Royal Steam Yacht Alberta but if you go to
www.nmm.ac.uk/collections
this site has a picture of a model of the vessel and some text with regards to it
I also found, after a quick google search a web site dealing with Hampshire and Dorset ship wrecks which has a large bit about when the vessel collided with the vessel Mistletoe in 1895. lastly The Daily Telegraph ran an article about Osborne House (in September) and in this item it mentions that in the 1970's the deck house from the RSY Alberta was rescued from a property in (I think) Portsmoth where it was being used as a shed it is now standing in the grounds of Osborne House near to the Swiss cottage.
Not much help in regards to your search but it is a start.

Here's the Isle of Wight History Society - they have some information about the Alberta - try them and see!
