I went through the fiche of the Blewbury register today while in the Berks FHS search room, looking for your Francis.  I was using the Oxford FHS fiche which is a transcription and so while Francis was missing he may be in the original register.  Around 1755 there were a number of children baptised with parents Richard and Elizabeth Butler.  She was called Betty for some of the earlier ones.

Baptism dates of children:

Betty 19 Jan 1752
Mary 9 Dec 1753
Richard 26 Sep 1756
John 5 Jun 1759
William 14 Mar 1762
James 24 Apr 1763
Sarah 2 Mar 1766

I went back a few years and there were no other Butlers and forward when there was another family in the 1770s after 1777 I think.

David,

Thank you very much for taking the time to look for Francis Butler for me. Unfortunately I think that there's a problem with his details.

I was searching familysearch.org for the parents of George Butler born abt.1782, Blewbury. In the IGI records I found the following,

George Butler, born 26 Oct,1783 Blewbury Berkshire.
Parents are Francis Butler born abt. 1755 and Lydia Westall, also of Blewbury Berkshire.

I have since subscribed to Ancestry.com, and  found this family in the  Durston, Somerset parish records. It would appear that someone has confused Upton, Somerset with Upton Berks.

If you are intending to visit the Berks FHS search room again, would you mind having a look for George Butler, born abt. 1782.

Many thanks,

Steve.

I can't find the reference but I have feeling that this Upton problem is with Ancestory and has been discussed before in this chatroom.

I had a feeling as I typed the original reply that I should have made notes on that later baptism.  I go into Reading about once a fortnight and will look next time.  If you find anything meanwhile can you post it on this thread please.

If you have any interations with Dew or Edlin in this area we can probably have a useful interchange.

Blewbury Parish Registers all for children from Upton.

Baptisms of children of Francis and Lydia Butler:

Mary 3 Oct 1780
George 26 Oct 1783 born 20 Oct 1783
Sarah 11 Feb 1787 born 4 Feb 1787
John Westall 13 Jun 1790 born 31 May 1790
William 14 Aug 1796 born  6 Aug 1796

Francis Butler of Upton married Lydia Westall of Upton 22 Aug 1780 by Banns wit: Thomas Butler William Frued.

William Frued must of been parish clerk or something similar because he witnessed most marriages in this period.

There was nothing else which obviously related to this family.

David,

Thanks for checking these details again for me.
I'll email Ancestry.com and make them aware of the error.

Steve - I am a Butler and I have traced my famly to Hampshire in the early 1700's, but then a brick wall. I tested my DNA and matched to a Butler family in Hampsted in the early 1800's that I think came from Chaddleworth, Berks., the problem is that we cannot connect the documentation trail.
I am now looking to confirm my 'guess'.
If you are a Butler, I was wondering if you had considered DNA testing as an aid to family history research.

Allen Butler

Hi Allen,

I tried to reply earlier, but I got an error message when I tried to post it.

I am not a BUTLER, I am related to them through my g-grandmother,
Annie Butler, so I doubt if I would be of much help to you for a DNA test.

Regards, Steven.

I'm a Butler via my father.  I am female, but, I have done my DNA test. If you are still looking for Butler matches, I certainly am.  I have a brickwall on my 3rd great grandfather who emigrated from England around 1861.  Elijah James Butler b. 1846 England.  I believe he may be David Butler and Elizabeth Belcher's child, but, I have not yet confirmed.

1851
Blewbury Berkshire
David Butler 34 ag lab
Elizabeth 35
George 10
Charles 8
Hannah 7
Emma 5
Elijah 4  bn Berkshire
Israel 4
Isaac 2
Job 2 mths

Not spotting his birth reg

There is one Jul/Aug/Sep 1846 with mmn Bury, but that is in Ellesmore Reg District, so not looking likely to be the same one.

Interstingly, I can see Israel  Ap/MAy/Jun 1846 Wantage mmn Belcher, but not Elijah.
And an Alfred Oct/Nov/Dec 1847, slotted between Israel and Issac

FreeBMD has Elijah BUTLER 1846 Q2 but not on GRO website.  Same Q on FreeBMD also has Elijah BOOKER.  That one is on the GRO, mmn KIMBER.  And Elijah HERMAN mmn YATTLE.  Some more Elijahs in the quarters following, it was a surprisingly popular name.  Perhaps the child in question was adopted by family after death of his mother/parents?  I know it happened more than we probably realise.  A couple of my dead rellies ended up in AUS after their parents died, prior to their emigration they were with their uncle and aunt for one census.  Easier in my case because surname was the same.

BTW I have BUTLERs also and I've done a DNA test, but my BUTLERS are probably too many generations back to have passed any significant amount of DNA on to me.

Jane :-)

Hi,

To add to lizdb's reply;
there are three baptisms all on 7-6-1846 in Blewbury (Ex OFHS CD);
Emma, Elijah & Israel with parents as David & Elizabeth Butler from Upton.

There is also a David Butler bapt. 21-3-1816 s/o George & Elizabeth

Also in Blewbury there is this marriage;
13-10-1838 David Butler, fa, bach, Labr, of Upton (s/o George, farmer) to
Elizabeth Belcher, fa, sp, of Upton (d/o William Hemmings, Labr
wits; Isaac Butler, Mary Ann Sims(x) By Banns.

This more or less confirms the info you mention and I hope it helps.

Thank you to everyone that replied!  I certainly hope he wasn't adopted into the family, as that would certainly make things a bit difficult and it would mean, we aren't Butler's at all!
I did see in the 1861 census Elizah and Ezra (Elijah and Israel?) are working as ag workers.  There is an Elijah, 25 on a passenger list to MD, USA in 1872.  But, no Israel.  Wonder if this is my Elijah and I'm on the right track, why he would come to the US alone?  Thank you all again so much.

I was told in a FB group, that the GRO shows this:

BUTLER, ISRAEL mother BELCHER Order
GRO Reference: 1846 J Quarter in WANTAGE UNION Volume 06 Page 274 Order

BULLER, ELIJAH mother BELCHER Order
GRO Reference: 1846 J Quarter in WANTAGE UNION Volume 06 Page 274

So, a typo on the last name!
