Could someone please look up for the following person on the 1841 census
Joseph Chapman born Barton Cambridgeshire, 1820c
He was the landlord of the Six Bells, Church End, Sandon, Herts in the 1851 census with this wife Elizabeth nee Baker and son Albert W (although he was under the name of John not Joseph).
He married Elizabeth in the Dec qtr of 1842 in Royston and their son was born in 1850.
I believe that Elizabeth came from the village of Chisall but my geography is not brilliant and I am not sure if that is in Cambridgeshire or Essex.

There are 4 Joseph Chapmans in Cambs who it might have been but none of them were in the parish of Barton, and as 1841 does not give birthplace, merely if the person was born in county or not, it's difficult to know if any of them might be the right person.
The same site has a baptism index but I cannot see a Joseph Chapman baptised in Barton.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/ is extremely good for getting information on parishes and which county they were in. Chishall is shown as being in Essex.
Royston was partly in Herts in 1841 so it may be that he was across the county boundary and would appear in the Herts census.

PS In 1861 Joseph/John gives his birthplace as Melbourne and in 1891 as Barrington.
PPS One of the possible Joseph's in the 1841 index was in Barrington (which is about half way between Barton and Melbourne which are 10 miles apart)

Ages over in 1841 should have been rounded down to the nearest 5 below so 20 would cover the range 20-24 (but as the enumerator kindly failed to observe the instruction in the case of Louisa it's possible that Joseph was actually 20)
Strange that some of the children appear in Barrington in the Baptism Index, but not Joseph.
In 1851/81/91 Elizabeth gives her birthplace as Heydon, Essex, in 1861 as Thaxted Essex. Heydon is next door to Gt Chishill and Chrishall, but miles away from Thaxted.
These people seemed to struggle to know where they were from!

Many, many thanks for this, I really do appreciate it.
My aunt by marriage has given me the most fantastic album containing masses of dates and photo's of the Chapman family taken from 1860-70 up to the present day. Included in these are several photo's of Joseph and his wife Elizabeth taken outside the Six Bells in Flamstead that would have been taken 1860-1870 so I knew he existed.
You say they don't seem to know where they came from. If its anything like the present family they wouldn't want people to know where they came from. I didn't say that really, lol.
I think it now means a trip to the record office to see the parish records for myself.
