Does anyone have access to the transcripts of a trial held on 8/4/1833 at Leicester court of a Joseph Tomlinson age 22- transported to Australia for 7 years for theft.
He left on the Aurora from Portsmouth arriving 3/11/1833. His notes say 'comes from Leicester???'
I would love to know where, and who his family back in England were.
Many thanks
Carol
PS my first post- hope this is how to do it!!!

Thanks for that Maidmarian, but none of those are the Joseph we want.
We know he was born around 1810/11 as he was 22 when transported.
It was his second offence?! so he was given 7 years- for stealing turnips!
My pal in Oz- whose ancestor he is-has found lots about him over there including his marriage to a Sarah Howe(an Irish girl),who calls herself Mary on occasions! But she'd love to know his roots over here.
I did try to look up the trial transcript or find a write up in the local Leicester paper of 1833 but the record office was closed for the week! :(
I may try to get to the Newspaper library in Colindale in the near future, unless anyone else has any more suggestions.
BTW His parents are reputed to be John and Betsey Tomlinson.

Hi,
I am searching for this family! I am looking for information on Joseph's parents- Mary Ann (maiden name unknow) and William Tomlinson. Can you please help?
The questions I have are details of their birth, marriage, death dates, their children (birth &death), parents of both and anything further back if possible. Any information would be appreciated!
I'm so happy I stumbled across this through google! My mother Yvonne was a direct descendant from William Tomlinson! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Warm regards from Australia

Hi Bernie and welcome to Rootschat.
Amazingly I am still in touch with my pal in Sydney who's ancestor the convict Joseph Tomlinson is.
I will get in touch with her and find out if she ever found out more about him,all we knew 13 years ago was that he came from Leicester.

There is a report in the Leicester Chronicle, 13th April 1833, of a Joseph Tomlinson, age 19, who was transported for seven years for stealing turnips, because of previous convictions. His accomplices, William Walker and William Monks received two months of hard labour.
The offence was in the Castle Donnington area. There are reports of a Joseph Tomlinson of Castle Donnington convicted for other offences after 1833, so may not be the same person.

David many thanks for that, although after 14 years I guess she's probably found that out,am waiting for her to get back to me.
Another side of her family was also convicted of stealing turnips and transported.
Seems so petty doesn't it,and if he did it because his family would go hungry otherwise....

Hi Carol & David,
Thank you so much! I have most of the desendants from Joseph in Australia. I began working on my family tree to see where I came from. I was put into the foster system when I was 4 years old so never really knew who my family was and I would like to reconnect with them. I am so grateful for any help I receive! Thankyou both so much!
:) Bernie
