Hello, can anyone help with a wee problem i have, in my research i have found my Gx4 grandmother Mary McLacais on Mull, she is also listed as Mary McDougall, is McLacais a Gaelic name and McDougall an Anglicized version, if any one knows the answer it would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Donald.

Hi there,
I have checked in the (comprehensive) "The Surnames of Scotland" by George Black, and can't see McLacais listed on its own or under MacDougall.
Information for MacDougall does show the following...
Gaelic 'MacDhughaill' - 'son of Dougal'
So I don't 'think' (although could be wrong) that you are looking for a Gaelic version of the name.
Can I ask where you saw the name listed? That is, what documentation was it on? Did your ancestor write the name herself of was it written in the hand of an enumerator or registrar, where they may just have guessed at the spelling of an unfamiliar name that they heard spoken. At a push, it could be a corruption of MacLachie, MacClatchie or even McClae. Depending on the year you are dealing with, Mull may still have been Gaelic speaking (not sure when English became the norm on the island), and they could have corrupted the name to a 'more Gaelic' spelling.
Just a lot of thinking out loud there - not sure if any of it is helpful or not.
If you want me to check anything else in the book, give me a shout.
Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare,
found the name McLacais in a couple of places, firstly on the IGI whilst looking up Archibald McEachern where his mothers name is given as Mary McLacais and also on the Rootsweb search pages for the Isle of Mull when you enter the query McDougal but her name given on that is Mary McDougal McLacais. Other replies Ive had off the Mull mailing list suggest its a variation of McLucas and that all forms of the name McLacais changed their name to McDougal although no reason given.
Thanks for the reply,
Donald.

Hi again Clare,
I also posted the message on the Gaelic section and asked if it was a Gaelic name, the reply i got said that McLacais/McLucas and its variations where a sept of the McDougal clan.

Hi Donald
I have just posted the following message on Argyll board.
I have discovered that the above names and other various spellings are same clan.
I was searching for my McDougal MacDougal from MULL c 1800s and found my Duncan McDougall was named McLullich in IGI.
I have since found out that spelling of his parents was Niel McLullich and Effy McPhail. McLullich being McDougal. Neil I believe was a b 1767 app to Donald McLullich.
Duncan had siblings Marrion Cathrine Archibald John Anne John Angus Neil Alexander born Torosay between 1799 and 1823. C115504 IGI. Duncan went to mainland where the name continues as McDougal MacDougall.
Anyone else searching these names on MULL?
Have you dates etc for your McLucas. I have gathered quite a bit

MCLACAIS does not seem to appear in extracted entries on the IGI.
There are however quite a few MCLUCAIS extracted entries.
Including an 1814 marriage of Mary MCLUCAIS & Angus MCCORMICK. And children to them.
Most MCLUCAIS records seem to be in Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon, Argyll-shire and thereabouts.
There are many MCLUCAS records in the IGI.
As Donald says, other sites connect MCLUCAIS/MCLUCAS & MCDOUGALL e.g.

Yes, I am researching the above. The children of John and Mary McLucais in the 1841 census of Mull reside in Ontario, Canada in 1861 under the name McDougal is my belief.
