Title: Help me find the " Helenslee " (Helenslea) in 1863
Post by: Zealandia on Monday 12 December 05 03:18 GMT (UK)
Hi there everyone,

Can any one help me locate a passenger list for the ship the Helenslee on her 1863 voyage from Glasgow to New Zealand. I have found part of one on line for Bluff but I believe my family disembarked at Port Chalmers or possibly Lyttelton-any help gratefully received. I am looking for any McBeath's who were aboard. Thanks in advance Chloe

Hi Chloe,

Try these. You might want to try Otago Settlers Museum first to eliminate Port Chalmers, and then try Canterbury Museum perhaps.

Otago Settlers Museum
http://www.otago.settlers.museum/
Excellent research services for those whose ancestors arrived or lived in Otago.

Canterbury Museum, Christchurch – Documentary Research Centre.

Use the email link for your research request.

Otago Nominal Index to 1876
http://marvin.otago.ac.nz/oni/default.html
At March 2005, the index holds 241,302 records from Electoral Rolls, Street Directories and Police Gazettes for Otago and Southland.

Good hunting, riley

Hi Chloe,

Archives NZ Wellington only have an Index card for the 1863 voyage, with the following sources given;

Otago Gazette 1871 p.183
(arr. Bluff 27 Sept 1863 dep. 3 July 1863)
This might be the source for the on-line passenger list mentioned above.

"SP 2/2" (SP = 'Southland Province').
This material is on microfiche #7104-7121. I checked it but found it to be indexed correspondance from various parties. I ran out of time to check section 2/2 but it appears likely to be similar material possibly from former a passenger/s of the Helenslee voyage who might be applying for a job in government, or government correspondance relating to the voyage.

Regards, riley.

Hi, Try this site http://www.aucklandlibrary.co.nz/, click on Digital Library, then History Genealogy, then search passenger lists, type in Helenslee, this will bring up a list of passengers that travelled on that ship. This site also has passenger list, but you will need to search through the dates, http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/, the paper you want is Sothern Cross, listed under Auckland publications, if you know the date of arrival, that will help you, and save time

Hi

Just joined today and noticed Baldwin and Saunders in your interests.  I have
Annie Baldwin who married my ancestor Ernest Saunders in Edmonton just before WW1.  Their son John Ernest Saunders, b.1920 died in Malta 1940 (WW2). His father fought for England in WW1 in the Royal Flying Corp. even though he was an Aussie.  I believe that his Mother, Annie, did not know of his extensive Australian family and would welcome any information regarding them.  John Ernest Saunders is my Mum's first cousin.

Hi Kim

You sent me a message that I cannot answer for some reason.  My Maybury/and its different spellings, are all from Chapel Hill from 1677?.  They moved to Warrington, Birmingham and Yorkshire in the 19th Century.  If you can let me know which Maybury you are researching I would love to help you.  My Gt Grandmother was Margaret Emma Maybury, she was born in 1869 Chapel Hill, Monmouthshire and moved with her parents to Warrington in 1870.

Her parents were Jonas Maybury and Betty Tamplin Jones.  Look forward to hearing from you again.

Hi Chloe
I know its a few years since you posted this message, Hope you had some luck and that we still can make contact with you.  If you would like to contact me on my email color=Blue](*)  I can put you in touch with my sisterinlaw who is working on the McBeath family tree,  there is a reasonable amount of history gathered on this line of the family in NZ.  Her great grandfather & his brother came out in 1863 on the Helenslea.  Hope to hear from you.  Kind regards Merrilyn in New Zealand
