Title: 1841 census returns for Hastings, Sussex
Post by: carolp on Monday 12 December 05 16:46 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Does anyone have any access to the 1841 census returns for Hastings. I am desperately looking for Ann and John English. Ann was born Ann Hide Taught in St. Clements, Hastings in 1781, she married William Harman in 1797 and had one daughter Sarah Harman in November 1798, Sadly, William died in the June of 1798, so never saw his daughter. Ann Harman remarried in 1805 to John English (although she married as Ann Harmer!!), and had a daughter in the same year, Ann English, in All Saints. The couple also had another daughter in All Saints in 1809, but sadly that child died a few months later.

The picture unfolds that Ann has always had connections with the Hastings area, but for the life of me, and I have looked at the records at Lewes county records office, I am unable to find either Ann or John English as being dead!! Can anyone help please. In 1841 Ann would be 60, where John English came from is one of those mysteries in life that I think I will never know!!, and God I have tried!!  There is a possibility that he was born in Crowhurst in 1781, but I can not verify that fact. Over to you.

Many thanks for any help or directional guidance.

Carol

I'm trying to find Robert White, his wife Elizabeth and their children  Mary Ann (bc 1821), Robert (bc 1822) and James (bc 1824).

Robert was born around 1799 and Elizabeth (Baker) around 1800.  Robert was a Fisherman also a butcher at some stage.

Kind regards
