a John Neilson Steel, emigrated from Scotland to Canada abt 1890-1910 ?
Walter was still alive in the 1950s.
Any info on these people or on folks with similar sounding names would be great.
Cheers

Have you looked for them in the transcriptions of the 1901, 1906 and 1911 census records:
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html
Once you know where they ended up, you'll know what city and province to search in.

Josephine

Found your Walter on the I.G.I. so I know that he was born in 1865...
When was John born? Might save some wild goose chasing to give
some more info. Hopefully they immigrated at the earlier date and
something more can be found

Wanted to see the age of your John, as I found in Manitoba 1875 birth in 1911...
More IGI searching under parents names & realized middle name is listed as
JOHN NELSON STEEL -Feb.10 - 1863 Govan, Lanark, Sct
I know that you probably don't need this information...but it can help us...

Yes, thank you all.
Sorry have no other info other than a letter was sent in the 50s.
the Walter from the IGI sounds most likely.
I will try and find some extra info.
-
Well, then I will put up the information I found for them....
JOHN NELSON STEEL 10 FEB 1863 Govan, Lanark, Scotland
WALTER NEILSON STEEL 08 FEB 1865 Govan, Lanark, Scotland
WILLIAM NEILSON STEEL 22 FEB 1868 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark
all of them February births!!!!
Born to John Steel & Jane Owens...is this your clan?

Thanks :)

The "Passages" site was a great find J.J. ;D Maybe the Funeral Home will have even more information for him.
Here is another site to look for relatives.
http://web2.gov.mb.ca/cca/vital/Query.php
Not knowing all your family members names or naming patterns, it would probably be better if you checked. (Here is one that I found)
GROOM'S LAST NAME: STEEL
GROOM'S GIVEN NAMES: HUGH NEILSON
BRIDE'S LAST NAME: FOX
BRIDE'S GIVEN NAMES: MARGARET MCCULLOCH
Place of Marriage: WINNIPEG
Date of Marriage: 04/20/1923

Wonderful Janice! ;D...I tried to find that marriage on Vital stats Man...where did you find it? That site so seldom works for me...
Mk2_Zephyr...I saw the other names, born in Scotland references, and thought it may have just been family memory that it was one generation sooner...
Now that we have placed the rellie, maybe we can look for more...!!!!
About a dozen Steel in the phone book here...J.J.
-
The son's info is listed here... http://findaperson.canada411.ca/
A quick note to them should get results! Maybe they can put you in touch with a family member who knows the genealogy? Every family seems to have at least one... ;D J.J.
-
Sorry, I hadn't read the obit through...You need to look in Maple ridge, B.C. and the only J. is the same nickname the father was called... ;) J.J.

This gentleman is in my tree, and I'd like to make contact with mark2 zephyr to discuss mutual ancestors. He has been asking about information I know the answer to!
-
Hi
Send me a pm ... :)

Many - many apologies for not successfully replying to your messages the other ways I have tried: This is my sixth attempt today!
Just wanted to thank you for your e-mail,and to apologise for having bothered you as it seems you don't think there is a link here after all. My father told me about Walter settling in Winnipeg, and he had a daughter of the same name as the one whose marriage you have discovered through Rootschat. that gentleman's brother emigrated to Australia, and from there some members of his family moved to NZ,so there were a lot of similarities!
Best wishes to you in your hunt for further family history,Islay.

No worries at all,
I'm not 100 % they aren't related,
but they are related to some one who I talked too a while back, so I will see what else I can find !
-
I know who this man is and where he settled, if you are still interested. I visited with his daughter in Canada some years ago.
