Title: WATCH & CLOCKMAKERS- Books go Back Monday
Post by: Frances on Friday 23 December 05 14:59 GMT (UK)
I was disappointed that I was  off-line due to a house move in July when Siouxzie offered lookups for Watch and Clock Makers of the World, please see

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,75492.0.html

I thought that maybe I would be able to solve a mystery so ordered volumes 1 and 2 of the Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World" from the library. I have now received Vol 1 by  G.H. Ballie.

I am willing to do look ups if anyone would like me to see if their ancestor is listed.

Frances

PS  Also VOL 2

Not an ancestor, but I'd be pleased to know something about a clock my mother has as I've drawn a blank so far

G Orpwood, Bishopsgate around 1820

Hi Frances,

Could you check on a John Brown for me please.  He's down as a clock maker on his son's marriage certificate in 1838 but I've not found him as yet on any census.  The marriage took place in Wakefield but his son was born in Ellerby, Yorkshire in 1815.  This was sometimes referred to as Helperby.  I have absolutely no other information.

Living in hope....

Hi Frances,
Could you check John Wilson, he was down as a watch maker on his son's marraige cert in 1848 (his son was born in Gateshaed in 1827). He was married in 1821 in Sunderland, Durham. So I hope those dates and place will narrow it down, I know its a rather common name.

Thanks

Sharon

Hi Glenys,

No luck I'm afraid, plenty of John Browns mostly in London, maybe he will be in the  Volume 2 when the library gets it in.

Kind Regards,

Frances :)

Hi Frances and a Merry Christmas !
My gggrandfather John Ansell was stated to be a watchmaker on his marriage certificate. Although the wedding took place in Nonington, I'm fairly certain he lived in Ramsgate where he was later described as a jeweller. He lived in the period 1820-1850. Any sign of him ?

No like Siouxzie wrote it does not give much info at all on most of the entries :(
Just under George Orpwood it gives " ill.Britten". Looking at  the abbreviations (if I have read it correctly) ill = illustrated. Under a small list of books there is one called "Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers" by F.J.Britten 1832. I think if you put the two together that it means that this entry came from that book :-\

I hope this makes sense,

Kind Regards,

Frances :)

Hi Billans,

I now have Vol 2 now of the Watch and Clockmakers of the World. There is an entry for a John Ansell in Ramsgate 1845. That is all the information it gives though, but it does show he was there!

Frances :)

Hi Frances.many thanks for the information!!
Title: Re: Lookup Offer WATCH & CLOCKMAKERS
Post by: spicky on Monday 09 January 06 18:17 GMT (UK)
Frances, the entry you found for me refers to a brother Samuel.,this is indeed the case and he moved to Ampthill (Bedfordshire) in 1749.I wondered if the listings you have are in surname or county order??I have no record of  Samuel being a watch maker, but it seems strange they refer to him,if this is not the case?
So my question is ;any Shortlands in Bedfordshire??
Thanks again for your time and assistance!! :)

Frances

My word. You are getting your money's worth from this library book!

Any chance that you could look up the Brights for me? They seem to be a jeweller/goldsmith dynasty, and I think some watch and clockmaking as well. They should be mentioned in Sheffield as well as possibly Doncaster, Scarborough, Buxton and Leamington.

Thank you
Isobel

Hi spicky,

Yes there is this one

Samuel Hanslope. b.1722 - 49 then Ampthill . 1749 - 57

Does this help? Its a pity the entries do not give more information, still yours is the most I have found up to now!

Kind Regards,

Frances :)

Hi Isobel,

It does not make it seem quite so expensive when you can look others up as well as your own. Being as they are unobtainable here the library had to order them 'from out of county' so cost more than normal, but not complaining!

Wow, it looks like you may be lucky!

VOL 1
Bright & Sons Sheffield and Buxton 1817 - 36
Isaac Bright Sheffield 1797 - 1817 W
P Bright Doncaster an1822 Watch

VOL 2

John Bright & Son Sheffield 1804 - 37
Bright & Woodmansey Doncaster 1851 successor to Philip Bright
Bright & Sons Scarborough 1858
Isaac Bright & Sons Buxton (b.1817 - ). 1828 - 49
Henry & Edward Bright Leamington 1850 - 54
H Bright Leamington 1860 - 68
Isaac Bright (& Sons) Leamington 1835 - (-42)

Kind Regards,

Frances :)

Thank you so much. This does seem to answer the question of when Isaac moved to Leamington anyway. The man seemed determined to populate the country with jewellers!

It's very kind of you to do this for everyone.

Hello Frances,
Like your effort with this topic!!.
Would you please look for a few generations of a family called TWITCHINGS (with variations) in the Finsbury and Holborn areas in the period 1787-1910?
Not related but invaluable for my 'one name study'.

Hello Frances

Just spotted your very kind offer, I wondered if you could see if my great grandfather or great great grandfather is mentioned in your book.

What tempted me to ask you was the message from billons (233.12.05) mentioning jeweller.  Here goes anyway -

Great grandfather (William Henry Cox) born about 1838-1842 in Warwickshire stated his father as being a jeweller in 1877.  Also his father (Thomas Cox) before him, sorry I don't know a year for his birth obviously early 1800's! :-\

If you can look it would be much appreciated.

Hi Joyboy,

Although I cannot believe it  that if a family was in one area for that long, they are not mentioned in either volume, not only that there are no Twitchings at all  anywhere???

Sorry I could not help you.

Hello Frances

Thank you anyway for looking, in my opinion it at least eliminates that from my research.  It was just when I noticed the word jeweller creep in on this thread I thought I would try it.

Please a lookup for a Samuel Jeffery . He is entered as a watchmaker in 1879 directory of Farnham Surrey and a timekeeper manufacturer in 81 and 91 census of  Wandsworth Surrey.  Also for his nephew William Edward Hawken listed as a jeweler and photographer in Lostwithiel Cornwall  1881/91 census.
 Thanks

Hi Alta,

This is all I could find in the correct areas. I hope they may help somewhere!

Kind Regards,

Frances :)

Both volumes have listed all variations of the name under Jefferies

Samuel - Farnham  1862 - 78 ( Vol 1)

Thomas Edward Hawken -  Lostwithiel 1873 (Vol 2)

I know this is not the name you requested but I thought being as this is the only  Hawken entry I would pass it on, maybe a relative :-\

Post by: Alta on Thursday 12 January 06 07:10 GMT (UK)
Thanks Frances

Now I know the Samuel isn't family  as mine  wasn't in Surrey until after 1871.
Thomas Edward Hawken is family .
Another piece in the puzzle
