Post by: bodger on Wednesday 28 December 05 22:39 GMT (UK)
Looking for an Armstrong family,  George Thomas riley ,b1847, Bangalore, India ,married in 1879, Sheffield, Harriet Wilson,(born in Australia). George Riley, b 1886, Hillsboro a nephew , married Florence A armstrong, B. 1883, in 1911. Florences siblings included ,Jessie, Jo, and Clara, i am wondering if there is a Armstrong family in the 1891 census showing these name or variations of.

Hi

Although George Riley was born in Hillsborough - where did the Armstrong family come from?

There is no Florence/Clara/Jessie that I can match to a single family on the 1891 Yorkshire census so it's possible they lived in another county.

Where did the Riley/Armstrong marriage take place?

Not 100% sure where the marriage was, but in the 1940s George and Florence lived in Walkley Lane, her brother Jo lived with them,, Jessie lived in Hillsboro, but spent her last days in Middlewood asylum, suffering from the effects of a bombing raid, Clara lived in Morley St, both the last two were married but i have no details, Claras son, Kenneth was killed aged 21 in the early days of the war, i am tryiong to get info re George Thomas Riley, i think he died in Leeds ?. Most of the Riley males were in the army, Kings Hussars, Cavalry Barracks, Fulford ,Yorks. Sorry i dont have more

Howdy bodger
have had a little dig around. The only George Riley, bn Hillsborough 1886 (plus a year either way) pops up on the 1891 census. His parents were John Riley and Isabel. John was bn 1847 in India. Isabel in 1852, Godalming, Surrey. Is this the right family?

Me again
             have found these

Florence Ann Armstrong - Mar qtr 1883, Ecclesall, 9c, 325
Joseph Armstrong - Jun qtr 1884, Ecclesall, 9c, 323
Clara Armsrong - Jun qtr 1886, Ecclesall, 9c, 333.
Jessie Armstrong - Sept qtr 1889, Ecclesall, 9c, 305.

This is guess work really, based upon your birth date for Florence, she was the only one that popped up for that year. jessie, there were two of, one born in 1877 who died a year later. No Jo's, just one joseph, and a Clara Lydia or the clara shown.

I can find only one marriage for a Clara Armstrong post 1901 in Ecclesall. Two woman and one man on page so not much help. the guy is William greenfield. Jun qtr 1911, Ecclesall, 9c, 757.

Thats all for now, have just checked out Genes Reunited and found something on there but i suspect it may be a posting by you bodger,
Sarah

I know this is an old thread but Harriet Wilson was my 2xGreat Grandmother and George Thomas Riley was her first husband, he was an attendent at the aslyum. He died in Wadsley and is buried at Wadsley churchyard in Feb 1885 along with their baby, Harriet 4 days after . I visited the grave  a few years ago.
Harriet went on to marry John Rose a widowed spring knife cutler from Wadsley. Now Harriet and John's daughter, Beatrice Rose born 1890 had been been facially disfigured with severe bombs I believed because she worked in an ammunition factory but you mentioned a bombing raid was there one in the Wadsley/Sheffield area in World war one?

Yes that's right only Florence and Stephen were my Great Grandmother's siblings. I know a half sibling went to Canada. Beatrice lost her nose due to an explosion I assumed she was a canary girl but further up the thread you mentioned Clara going into the asylum following bombing raids? Harriet is fascinating have since found out she was actually born Harriet Ensor and her Father was a convict transported to Australia long story that I am still trying to get to the bottom of.
