Hi everyone. Any tips on how to find information in NSW which isn't included on the NSW BDM index's or the colonial secretarys papers. The families I am interested in are Frederick Swansborough, his wife Hanoroh or Laura Mulqueeney and their children; also her parents Dennis and Bridget Mulqueeney whom I believe where Irish immigrants. I have no idea how the Swansborough family came to be in NSW or where they originated from.
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Anne in OZ.

Hello Ann,
What dates are we talking about?
There are some other options but I would have expected to see the families in the BDMs - unless they weren't in NSW for long enough?

Hi Prue, thanks for you help. The 7 year old Dennis Mulqueeney interests me as our Dennis married Bridget Lynch in 1871, if they are the same that would have made him 21. I have 9 children for Dennis and Bridget one of them being my husbands g/grandmother. Ummm, the Swansborough's...here is what I know Frederick Swansborough married Hanorah or Laura Mulqueeney in Glebe, NSW 1905, i have 5 children for them. I have no idea how the Swansborough family came to NSW or where they originate from. Bit of a dead end..LOL, but what's new with that? I searched the BDM index for NSW until I went crosseyed, then I decided to ask for help. :D
Cheers

Hello Anne,
The NSW marriage certificates from that time usually have information relating to where the bride and groom were born, and their parents names plus more, so you may have to obtain the certificate to advance your research, that is if you haven't already.
Good luck,
margaret :)

NSW Death certificates list the amount of time the person has lived in Australia, so this is always the best place to start.
I can't find the deaths for Frederick and Laura in NSW. Maybe they moved interstate?

Dear Prue, Margaret and Leonie...hope I haven't left anyone out.. :-\. Thanks very much for the tips and info. I have finally blown the cobwebs out of my purse and ordered 2 marriage certificates. The reason I have put off ordering certifiacates is because I ordered 1 before from NSW from a marriage in 1840 and there was nothing on it at all that wasn't already available on the web. Needless to say I was very dissapointed. Also, aother question, I have found the page with the Mulqueeney arrivals aboard the Aloe in 1857 and there is an option for "copy order form", has anyone done this and do you get any more information than what is already shown? Also as Margaret said, there is no death record for Frederick Swansborough or his wife Laura in NSW, I have checked all my VIC discs and can't find him there either. I am hoping someone in another state with death index's might PPLLLEEEAAASSEEEEEE take a look for me or point me in the right direction for an online search.
Thanks again
Cheers

Anne the cheapest way to get details of certificates in NSW is to get a transcription agent.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm#TranscriptionAgent
NSW Civil registration didn't start until 1856, so prior to that only church records are available. Thus said, I have a marriage certificate from 1873, where most of the information was omitted, but most of my NSW certificates, especially death certificates, have had all the information.
I use Laurie Turtle for my transcriptions. He also goes to the State Records and will transcribe the shipping records - also at a lesser fee (I think - you would need to check prices) than the copy rate from State Records.
Sometimes there is more information on the shipping records - sometimes very little.

Hi Ozybob, thanks for your help. A lot there to chase up. Someone gave me the death of Hannah however the Frederick dying in 1956 interests me, I didn't have that one. If I could find how the Swansborough's came to Australia, I am sure everything will open up and fall into place.
Thanks again

I have sent Anne a private message but thought I would post here in case others show interest in Frederick Leopold 1877-1956.
He is my 2 x great grandfather and he married Emma Mason in the UK and had 2 children before they separated and went their separate ways. They initially went to Dundee where Emma stayed with her lover and daughter and he went on to Australia sometime after 1901 and stayed there until his death. I have his death certificate. Their son was palmed onto his maternal grandparents and then his maternal aunt.
Although I had suspicions that Frederick Leopold had had children in Australia due to his 40+ year residency there I could see no documentary evidence of that fact. Nor were his grandchildren aware of any from the letter(s) they received and final news report ( since lost ) of the funeral.
However, in the last few weeks a match on my mother's MyHeritage DNA kit has highlighted the likelihood that they are a great grandchild of Frederick Leopold via one of his partners/lovers. They have since received a match on their Ancestry kit of what appears to be a half aunt on the same side of the tree pointing at another grandchild of Frederick Leopold.
If anyone thinks they may also be a descendant of this guy, please upload any DNA test you have done to MyHeritage so we can confirm the connection with more certainty as I have DNA matches from Frederick Leopold's father and grandfather to help confirm the family connection.
I may not visit often .. I haven't been on here for years, maybe even decades .. so it may be a while before I see any responses. But I will bookmark this forum posting to remind me.

Yeah that 2018 was the first visit after years away after doing a google search regarding my gipsy ancestors I had gained new info on.
Anyway, in regards to Frederick Leopold. I had most if not all of his Australian records being the great granddaughter of his only known surviving child he left in the UK. But some of those news reports I hadn't seen before. But, what I haven't seen is the report detailing Frederick Leopolds funeral. Apparently there had been a procession, probably due to him being an Anzac. This report had been sent to my great uncles at the time but since then has been lost.
What my response here was for in the hopes of reaching the person that was looking at Frederick Leopold as her potential ancestor, meaning that we could be cousins. I have mine and my mother's DNA done so that theory should hopefully be confirmed due to the DNA that should be shared between 1st and 2nd cousins. As I mentioned, I have since found that he did have at least one child after his arrival in Australia and that resulted in at least 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. 2 of those 3 are amongst my matches on MyHeritage so there is a potential for more and like these are possibly adopted or father unknown.

Although my line of Swanborough's never used Swansborough spelling you never know.
Frederick Leopold left Scotland for Australia on the Omrah in 1907 and embarked in the forces in 1915 having been living c/o the Sandilands Hotel in Mallanganee, Casino at that point and using the name Swanborough. Although he never officially divorced from his wife Emma Mason they were separated sometime between 1902 when their son was baptised in Manor Park, East London (Essex) and their arrival in Scotland by 1907 leaving their son with his maternal grandparents in Essex.
The American and Australian line of Swanborough families tended to use Swansborough in daily use. So this could be the other Frederick who married Norah. But, timing is possible for my Frederick, although, at the time of his death in 1956 no one was aware of him being married in Australia or any children. So, what was Norah's status at that point, and their children ?

SWANBOROUGH FREDERICK - 563/1948 - 66 YRS - CAMPERDOWN - NEWTOWN
Newtown was where the Hanorah Swanborough had her funeral so this is likely the Frederick she married and not Frederick Leopold who died 8 years later in Casino.
