Title: Overseas Ancestry - Austria
Post by: proactiv on Friday 17 September 04 13:27 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any ideas about how to start tracing the Austrian side of the family?  While we have good tracks for my wife's late father - a Londoner with clear roots in Devon - her mother was born in Brun!  Her maternal grandparents were named Meixner - he was an officer in the Austrian cavalry and we actually have a family portrait (dated 1909) currently being restored.  That's as far as it goes.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.  Thanks also to help from the Bob in Berlin.

Hi David,

try this one for starters:  http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/

Enter meixner in the search box.  Was he just a 'common or garden' Meixner
or was he a "Meixner von Zweinstamm'. there are two there, Otto and Hugo, and their father Eduard is also mentioned. Photos too, so "compare and contrast" ??

Frohes Jagd !

Try the Anglo German FHS, they also cover Austria.

There is also an Anglo-Austrian FHS or Group trying to get started, and a mailing list, which is quiet, but may be a useful platform to meet fellow researchers. - http://www.aafhg.org.uk/
