Post by: Shirley Sweetland on Sunday 19 September 04 10:00 BST (UK)
Researching my grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth (Wright) Dalton, born in Battersea. Married at Battersea in December 1894. Uncles were George, Charles, William and Frank. My mother Nellie Margaret Dalton/Daulton born at 6 Foots Row, Battersea in 1907.

Charles father named as William Dalton and Elizabeth's father was Thomas Wright(deceased by 1894), both labourers.

Hello

Are you still looking for this family?

If so could you be a bit more specific about what you're looking for e.g. census or BMD lookup?

Regards
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan I've done as many look-ups as I can, just hoping someone would recognise the family.

Hi Shirley
Was going to look onto my grandfather's background when I ran across this post.
Not sure if he is the same man as one of the brothers but my grandfather's name was Frank Dalton, who came from Battersea and he and his brothers and sister spent time in a workhouse when he was young.
He was born in 1904 and died in 1988.
Lied about his age to join the army at 15.
Spent many years in India including ww2 with the British army ending up as an RSM.
Married Margaret Woplin of battersea not certain of the date.
Could he be one of the brothers?

It looks as though Elizabeth Dalton remarried in Wandsworth district, Jun qtr 1929, to Robertson James Partridge. (He appears in some records as James Robertson Partridge).

My Grandfather does appear to be the same Francis William Dalton as that is the name on his birth certificate along with his father as Charles Dalton (waterside labourer) and his mother Elizabeth (formerly Wright) Dalton.
I also clearly remember my Grandafather talking about how he and siblings spent time in a workhouse when he was younger which Shilrley mentions in another post.
He joined the royal fusiliers in 1922 and spent almost 24 years in that regiment serving the colours and another 7 years as a reserve after being discharged in 1945
He married my grandmother Margaret Mary (formerly Woplin) Geere who had gained her divorce from her previous husband Fredrick Geere that same year.
They had no children but my mother was the product of my nans previous marriage although my mother Emily never saw her Father Fredrick after about 1938 and always referred to my Grandad "Frank" as her dad.
He was a genuinely lovely gentle man with a huge amount patience and kindness, I miss him still to this day.
I do believe that my grandfather only met up with his siblings on only one other occasion after he joined the army and I believe my mother had a photo of that meeting.
I am not sure if Shirley is still around as these posts were made in 2004 and she was 73 then but I do hope so as it could fill in some more blanks for her search.

Keith - would be delighted to make contact with you. I can give you a lot of information about your Geere grandfather if that would be if interest.

He was one of nine sons two of whom died in WW1.
