I have used Nortons Internet Security package for years but now the subscription is due for renewal. Being as Nortons are saying they no longer will give support on my older edition I have purchased the 2006 edition (on disc)..
This is my problem, on installation my present edition is deleted and after installation of 2006 you go on line to get the updates to bring everything up to date. What I am concerned about is that for the last few days I am being told that this Intrusion: HTTP Apache Redundant Slashes DoS keeps trying to get in my computer. It happened again today when I had been on line for 10 minutes. What if it tries when I am downloading the new updates?
On looking on the Symantec web site it tells you to update to the latest version of Apache. I do not understand what they mean, I cannot find any reference to it on my computer, that is probably through my ignorance ???
Any advice and help would be gratefully received.
Many Thanks,
Frances

You don't need to worry ... Norton does not disable itself while updating through the downloads ... that bit happens while you are offline.
Apache is a web server program ... possibly the most widey used in the world and this problem is an old one (version 1.24 and older) if you are not running any form of web server yourself then it shouldn't affect you ... if you are, I would suggest upgrading to the latest version.

Hi Falkyrn,
Thank-you for explaining that to me. Being as for some reason I have had forteen
alerts in the past two days I did not see how I could get a download to complete quick enough. I have over a week before my subscription runs out so will now go ahead without worrying.
Thanks again for your advice it has put my mind at rest!

Hi Jan,
I thought I was the only one who did not understand, but I did think I could not be the only one getting these alerts. I have to admit to knowing very little about the inside working of computers!!

Hi Frances
I know quite a lot about computers......well, I thought I did anyway ;D but I haven't seen anything like this before.
All sorted now thanks to Falkryn's computer brains ;D ;)

Falkryn's computer brains
.... my wife finds that very funny indeed.
This actual attack is a denial of service (D o S) attack against servers running Apache basically its from "hackers" adding /////// to the end of a web address. The server devotes memory to deleting the slashes from the address and the more of them the more memory it devotes to the task until the system crashes. But if you are not running any servers then you don't need to worry ... although its always advisable to give your system a regular scan
-
Thanks for that explanation Falkryn, certainly not running any servers ;D and yes the scan runs every Friday evening :D
Thanks again,
Frances :)

I have been having exactly the same problem in the last few days. I have just logged on to, Roots, and it came up again. I also have norton anti virus. this only happens when i'm on, Roots.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that it only happens when I'm using Rootschat - and I notice it more when I click on "Post"!
Other than that, I'm not running any servers either. amd run a scan every week.

Yes I agree it does happen when I am on Rootschat. After reading the reply from
gjil I closed Rootschat down but stayed online and did not receive any alerts at all.
I wonder why?
Now I'm off to watch BBC2!

I'm certainly looking into this now. It's very strange that it only comes up when you are on RootsChat.
-
Thanks Trystan, hope you can find the cause.
Frances :)

Can you tell me on what pages that it happens on, or what has just been clicked before it happens?
Puzzled. ???
-
Right, I've got Internet Explorer opened now with Norton Internet Security 2006 running. Just seeing if I can get the same error message....
-
Fixed!
Sorry about that folks. One of the adverts had several \\\\\\\\\\\\ at the end of the address!
Thanks for letting me know. If it happens again, then I'm all ears :)

Trystan it just happened again!
I was replying to a post by TonyR on the Armed Forces Board, my post original was Military Papers, it came up either on that board or as I jumped to the entry page for the reply.
Does that help!
I need help ;D ;D ;D

This is very strange.
Thanks again for letting me know!
I've pretty sure I've fixed it again for good (for now!!).
It's a problem with the same advert link again. It's the "One Great Family" ad. It's not their fault at all, but rather the way in which I had put in their advert.

Thanks again Trystan, had the problems a couple of times on the Cambridge board,
fixed now, so all is well.
Frances :D

Thank you Trystan,
I've put my bow and arrow back in the cupboard for now.
