Have found my ancestor WILLIAM COPE in the 1901 census, living in BROMLEY KENT, born abt 1858.
I am confused by his birthplace. It reads: COM, Cambridge
Does anyone know what this means?
I would be grateful for any information about him in 1861 if he appears there.
many thanks,
Christine

Re 1901 - whilst the index says COM, Cambridge, the image says Cambs, Cambridge.
It means another indexing error!

:) :) :)
Thankyou for the info!
I used it on freebmd, and found the William James Cope you mentioned - unfortunately it turns out that he died in March 1865.
I have found a William Parker Cope (June 1857 3b 625) and William D Cope (Dec 1859 3b 597) from the District of WISBEACH.
Is WISBEACH still in Cambridgeshire? Neither appear in the 1861 census so I wondering if perhaps the border had moved.
Thanks also Bedfordshire Boy for clearing up the birthplace problem. I was starting to look for Poorhouses and Orphanages with the initials COM - so that has saved me some time!
regards,
Christine
