Hello,
I don't have a lot to go on,
my great grandmother was Beatrice Victoria Coombes, or names could be other way around and not sure of Coombes spelling. Apparently she was born in Cheltenham in 1887/89? and married David Parfitt - no date yet. They had 2 daughters Phyllis and Iris and possibly an adopted daughter Rose. Phyllis born 01.10.1909 married Ivor Williams -again date not known -in Bridgend Glamorgan. They had 6 children. My mother being one of them.
If this links this would be great as so far I have drawn a lot of blanks on my grandmothers side.
Thanks very much
Stella

Hello Dave,
thanks very much for your help. Probably too young. We know they moved to Glamorgan, and later children lived in various places-Briton Ferry Glamorgan,Maerdy and Argoed. Her daughter Phyllis Eleanor Parfitt was possibly born in Pontypool as did search on 1837online and only 1 match for 01.10.1909, though we thought she was born in Cwmfellynfach. Hope this helps,

regards

Hi Dave,

I haven't actually made the connection yet but my stepfather tells me that his ancestors, the Dunstans (And specifically his mother Annie Dunstan, whose family  I believe was originally from Cornwall) are somehow related to a Coombes family in Deri. As I said, I've been too busy looking at my own ancestry to get started on his but if you do know of any possible connections I'd be interested to know more.

Thanks,
Mike E.

Mike ,
In the info i have  Morgan Coombes who lived in Deri after the death of his first wife Margaret Coombes . In 1901 he got remarried to a widow  Mary Edwards from Tredegar lived in 161 Robert street Ynysybwl near Pontypridd with his children and Stepchildren.
He moved to Watson Road in Deri  with Mary Coombes nee Edwards in 1909.

Sadly Morgan was killed in the Darren Ciolliery explosion on 29th October 1909 with 21 others.
Morgan was a Repairer at the Pit.
Morgan is buried at St. Mabon churchyard , Llanfabon near to the village of Nelson.

Hope this helps,
Dave Boyce

Many thanks for that, sorry about the delay in replying.

The connection I have in my family is through Beatrice Dunstan (1887-1971)> She married an Alfred Coombs (b. 1887-?) in Deri. The family lived in Watson Row for a while.

That's all I have at this point.

Mike.

Hi Dave, I notice in your family interests you have Rowsells. I too have Rowsells from Paulton Somerset, I wonder if there is a connection?  My G Grandmother was a Martha Rowsell married a Lewis Carter both from Paulton they then moved to Ynysybwl via Tredegar, in the late 1800s. Martha had brothers Thomas, George and sister Hannah, Their parents were Henry and Hester, Henrys father was Thomas 1778-1821, and his father was William 1745- 1797. If there is a connection I would like to investigate further.  Thanks.

I know a (*) Coombes, who claims he has an ancestor hanged for sheeping stealing in Wales.   Would this be a connection?  If interested post to Hamburgmichael.

Would be interested to hear.   His branch sailed to New England in the 18th century and another Coombes ancestor was a colonel in George Washington's army.

Many thanks.

Hello  :)

NLW has a Crime and Punishment database with details of crimes, criminals and punishments included in the gaol files of the Court of Great Sessions in Wales 1730 to 1830:

http://www.llgc.org.uk/sesiwn_fawr/index_s.htm

Can't see a Coombes there though.  :-\

For those with Carmarthenshire felons there is another database:
http://www.welshlegalhistory.org/carms-felons-register.php

Kind regards
Morgan

I know this is a very old thread but I've only just seen it. Mary Edwards (Coombes) was my great-great-grandmother so this is very interesting to me. I've been looking for the family's burial places so I'll try St. Mabon.
