I am looking to make a connection with Jonathan Batty in the census of 1841. He was born 1804 in Killamarsh. He was a farmer.
He is registered as a widow in the 1851 census, so I am hoping to find his wife Sarah is around in 1841.

Sarah's maiden name was Leah, but I am almost sure that they were married with children by 1841.
Were there any children with Jonathan?

I'm sorry it should said couldn't find above for Jonathan.

I have the whole of Derbyshire 1841 census on CD. As you probably know it is not indexed. If you find any more info on somewhere else your family might be, I'll be happy to look.

Hi Sue
That certainly does look like the entry that I am looking for. All the names and ages tally with the ones in the 1851 census and beyond. I have since found Sarah died in 1845 possibly in child birth. Also between the two census' of '41 and '51 Jonathan as gone from a coalminer to a farmer of 28 acres. :o
Thank you very much to Sue and Sue for your time. :)
I have two family group records with the child being Jonathan Batty. One christened 13 Oct 1803 Killamarsh, Father: William, Mother: Sarah And the other christened 23 Oct 1803 Killamarsh Father: John, Mother: Sarah. One is the Jonathan we have in the 1841 census. Is there a way of pinpointing which one?
I am plaqued by Jonathan Battys. I have another in my tree (different family) married to a Mary Ann also in Killamarsh. At least I know them to be there in 1822 when their daughter Zillah was born. Unfortunately I have no other dates for this particular Jonathan. ???
Thanks again for your help and time.
Gregg :)

I see your predicament regarding which Jonathan Batty is yours, but I can't see how you can find out. If his marriage had been after the introdction of civil registration you would have been able to find out his fathers name from the wedding certificate, unfortunately for you - this is not the case. Oh well, best of luck with it anyway.

Thankyou Sue, you have been a big help,
Would you happen to have records for 51 and 61 to check if Mary Batty is ever down as Mary Ann Batty?

With the Batty's that you found for me in the 1841 census I have managed to make a connection. I have come up with IGI records for the children, that tie them to the only other child that I had, and their parents. From there I managed to find the fathers christening records along with his parents names. A marriage record then followed for the fathers parents giving a maiden name for the lady.
I have struggled for such a long time with this one. With your help I have come up trumps. Thankyou. :D
I cannot find anything to decifer the other two Jonathan Batty's in my tree. I think parish records will be the next port of call there.
Many Thanks
Gregg :)

Hi Greg, looks like we are following the same tree. Jonathan and Mary Ann Batty are my 5th great grandparents. Have you found Mary Ann's maiden name yet? I had thought it was Dearnally, but if that is the couple they were married in Kirkburton, and Im thinking that's not likely given how far that is from Killamarsh/Barlborough where they were both born.

Welcome to Rootschat.
Gregg hasnt been on here since 2013 so hopefully you will get a reply.
With regards to William Batty 1841 there are 2 GRO Birth Regs;
BATTY, WILLIAM, Mothers maiden name MACHIN****
GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in CHESTERFIELD UNION IN THE COUNTY OF DERBY Volume 19 Page 441
BATTY, WILLIAM no Mothers maiden name -
GRO Reference: 1841 D Quarter in OF CHESTERFIELD UNION IN THE COUNTY OF DERBY Volume 19 Page 440
2nd one likely illegitimate Bapt 10 Nov 1841, St Giles, Killamarsh, Mother CATHERINE
This looks like Joseph born c 1838 according to 1841 Census
BATTY, JOSEPH, Mothers mn MACHON ***
GRO Reference: 1837 D Quarter in CHESTERFIELD UNION IN THE COUNTY OF DERBY Volume 19 Page 314
So MACHIN Martha - 70 on Census is likely related :)
-
MARY ANN Machen Baptised 10 Sep 1795, St James the Great, Barlborough, Derbyshire
Mother ELIZABETH
1871 Mary A Batty is born c 1795 Barlborough, Derbyshire,
(living with Son William and Family)

Thanks so much for your help Trish. I have just joined the site and didn't realise it was such an old thread. You're right she was a Machin/Machon/Machen, which I have been looking for all day. (Its nearly midnight here in Oz). Now Im looking for her marriage to Jonathan Batty. It never ends does it, lol.
Thanks again for your kind help.

Given her age when 1st Batty child was born she may be widowed and the marriage under another surname.
GRO only shows her maiden name on birth regs.
Trish, in Sydney :)
