Title: from Canada to the UK pre 1877
Post by: Sandersline on Wednesday 08 February 06 10:59 GMT (UK)
I desperately need some advice on where to go to next.

My great great grandmother, Minnie Mary J Fox, according to census records, was born in Canada.  Her marriage certificate to George Gallear in 1877 states her father as John Fox.

Is there anyway of tracking her down preferably on line since I live in Aust.  I saw in a previous posting that records were kept at Kew but for later years for outgoing passengers from Canada to Britain.

Does anyone have any advice or have I hit one of those brick walls and can go no further?

Kind regards
Heidi

What was John Fox's occupation on the certificate? The names of the witnesses?  You don't usually see young, single women moving back from Canada to the UK, which makes me think she had relatives there or possibly the whole family moved back.

(And yes, the incoming records for Kew would be too late to catch her, and also are unindexed).

John Fox was deceased at the time of Minnie and George's marriage in 1877 and I cannot find Minnie on the 1871 census which leads me to believe they came to England during this period.  John Fox's occupation was a stonemason.

The witnesses were Frank Fox and Hannah Garbett (spelling of this last name may be slightly out due to poor handwriting).

Could this information help in tracking her arrival and departure information?

Kind regards

You really aren't going to find ship records for this time - but Frank Fox is a definite clue - he's probably a brother or uncle to Minnie.  I notice that her first children in the 1881 census were b. Walsall and in 1881 at 26 Lantarra St, Walsall, there is:

Frank Fox, 41, b. Alrewas, Cooper
Betsey, 37, b. Walsall
Frank, 15, b. ditto, Caster
Mary Ann, 13, ", Scholar
William, 10, ", "
Charlotte, 7, ", "
Elizabeth, 4, ", "
Maria, 1, ", "

You could also try tracking the address listed for her (if a full street address is given on the marriage certificate) through the censuses to see who else lived there.

Thank you for that advice.

It certainly gives me a lead which I can try to find out.  Hopefully Frank and Minnie were born in the same place and hopefully Alrewas is in Canada.

Unfortunately the only information on the marriage certificate in regards to her address is : "Canada".  Not even a province.  Nevermind.

Kind regards
