Title: Ohio Help Please!!
Post by: lily2103 on Friday 17 February 06 03:32 GMT (UK)
I know this info isnt U.K. relatd but im hoping that someone will know what to do or where to look!
My rellie was Leslie Orian Carpenter, born 15 Nov. 1900 in Ohio, most likely Monroe county.  His parents were Sarah Snyder and Earl Carpenter.  They never married and family stories say that Sarah was a servant in Earl's house and he was married to another woman but that Earl put Leslie through school because he didnt have any other children. Leslie eventually became the principal of a public high school (again i think in monroe)  Now, Sarah's parents were Francis Snyder and Eliza Baker who married 27 July 1873 in Monroe county Ohio  (Sarah must have been REALLY young when she had Leslie) Earl's parents were Jack Carpenter and Ella Wells.  I have no other dates but Im hoping someone can help.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!

On the 1900 census in Monroe County in the house of John S. Carpenter a farmer aged 60 married, wife not present, were his two single sons Oliver W. 20 years old and his younger brother Earl W. aged 18, both farm labourers. Also in the household was Sarah E. Snyder their father's cousin, a 23 year old (though her year of birth was written as Feb. 1873) whose occupation was a cook, and another Snyder, Laurence aged 2 whose relationship to the head of household was given as second cousin (which would be correct if he was the son of Sarah, and she was a cousin to John). On the census it stated Sarah was single and the mother of two children, both living at the time of the census.

The first one looks like a posibility as the 1920 has a Charles and Maggie that are the right age, and Sarah's father was Francis... but her mother was Eliza, could Eliza and  Louisa be the same person??

It says Louisa E.

So she was probably known by her second name, that often happened.

It all looks good to me, but I wonder where Sarah is.  Could she still be with Earl's father as thats where she was in 1900?

On the 1910 census in Monroe county Ohio
John S. Carpenter aged 70 has remarried. His new wife Elizabeth aged 40 (married 7 years) is the mother of 6 children (6 still living). One of them is Angie aged 14, step daughter to John, but her surname is given as Carpenter (there are an awful lot of Carpenters in Monroe county). She may have taken John's surname, it maybe a mistake on the census, or her original surname was Carpenter. With them also was John and Elizabeth's own son Chancel aged 8 (who seems to have arrived slightly in front of the marriage).

The 1910 index is slightly difficult to find people on

"This database is an index to the head of households enumerated in the 1910 United States Federal Census, the Thirteenth Census of the United States"

If Sarah is not a head of household and not in the household of someone you know to search for then it makes it almost impossible to find her. There seems no evidence that Elizabeth, John's wife in 1910 is actually Sarah E. Her age, number of children, plus daughter Angie who should have appeared on the 1900 census would seem to rule her out.

Valda

Looks like family lore may have to be changed.
This is the only Earl Carpenter in Monroe County.  He seems to have been very fruitful, and multiplied many times.---Genealiza

In the Ohio Death Certificate Index, located at the Ohio Historical Society <www.ohiohistory.org>, I found a Sarah Delilia Carpenter who dies Feb 2, 1942.  Maybe her death certificate will state her maiden name.
