Title: Rake Lane Cemetery
Post by: Salopian on Wednesday 29 September 04 08:40 BST (UK)
I believe my gggrandfather Thomas McNab(Mariner) is buried at Rake Lane Cemetery....he was said to have died at 94 years and was born in approx 1840 in Scotland. His last address in 1901 was Pulton cum Seacombe.. although I do not have any idea of the date of his death, I am looking at around the 1930's. I believe his children and wife were also buried in the same cemetery, Can anyone help please, as I have already checked Cheshire BDM and Lancashire BDM and IGI.
Thank you
Andrea  :)

Andrea This is amazing. I have been collecting on nice days from this very cemetery. Inscriptions of Merchant seamen & R.N.R .that i have just last week started a new topic with I also live in the area so i think i should be able to help you.I can look up Thomas McNabs birth place in scotland, i hope, i can also get the oridginal print-out for Poulton cum Seacome for 1901. Another thing i can do is find out when he was buried and the plot. If the grave stone is still standing and it should be. i will take a photo for you.  Both My Grandfather a Master Marina  and a marine engineer are buried in the same cemetery. It Might take a week or 2 to do all this. As I have to go to the main place to obtain the plot number + map and the burial date from the records. then  find the plot. So will start on Monday. I will send you the info when i have got it all in.

Hi Celia...I cant thank you enough...as I think most of the McNabs are buried there. Leonora Thomas's wife and possibly some of the children. I have a cousin living in New Brighton, but she doesnt have time to do anything as she teaches and has a family, and three boys. As the cemetary isnt online, I must say its great that you are doing that.
Cheers

Hi Salopian I mentioned maybe you should try Liverpool and Leicester in your search. Well i just had a look on the 1881 census ( after checking the birth years of the children you sent me) on family search, it's quicker than searching my own. Your McNab family are on it and another two children that i mentioned you had room for. Living at 12 Barlow lane in Kirkdale. Course you may have this but maybe not. You should now be able to find the births of the children1875 1877 & 1883  in Liverpool. If you get the 1891 census that will tell you if they were still in liverpool or not.

Celia                                                                      P.S found the C of Isabel (age 26 on the 1901 census)Eliza McNab on 19th November 1874 at st Mary's in kirkdale. Parents Thomas & Leonora McNab

Hi Celia...yes I have the census for 1881 and also 1891 (they lived in Walton Liverpool)..then moved to the Wirral...the other three sons were in the Merchant Navy as well...my grandmother is Isabel...
I just wanted to find the cemetery records, as on the marriage certificate for Thomas and Leonora,(they were married in Liverpool) his parent is listed as Robert McNab gentleman, born Scotland, and no mother listed. The problem I have is finding out where in Scotland he was born...and thats proving to be difficult in getting the right one.
I thought maybe the death records would show where he was born etc.
Thank you again Celia...call me Andrea  ;D

No Andrea the death record wont show where he was born only where he died. Why when asked where they were born by the census taker did all the Scot's say Scotland. ;D Mine did found her eventualy.

Hi Celia...I wish I was over there..as its gets so frustrating trying to do searches this end..I found so many Thomas McNabs in Scotland..but maybe on his tombstone, if there is one, it might say exactly how old he was, as his age seems to vary one or two years on the census. Good luck :) Andrea

Hi Andrea I wasnt able to go where i had intended to go today. My son has a wrist injury and is unable to drive. so will go later in the week. I thought maybe i could find the death of  Thomas's Wife Leonora as she was 10 years younger, in cheshire.   or wirral. Didnt have any luck just as was going cross eyed ;D
I came across a Martha McNab who died December 1900 on the wirral.( I went back to that date to see if there was ny Macnabs in the wirral at that time) could she be related to your family. when i came back i went on free B.M.D. You may have done so. I found McNab Deaths in macclesfield, birkenhead, up to 1910. as these are both very close to the wirral (cheshire) they could be related.

Celia P.S if you read this earlier on you will see i have rectified my error ::)

Hi Andrea, an update for you. I decided on leaving the hospital after my physiotherapy(i broke my arm in july :() That i would go to Landican and ask about the burial records.Because i just missed the bus they were closed when i got there. After waiting 2 hours for them to open i went back after having a meal in the pub ;D Only to be told that they no longer have the records. they are now in the town hall in birkenhead. She said the records from all the cemetery's are being transcribed into fich. this is wonderfull news and the first i have heard. It will make research so much easier because the plot number will i hope be on them.So i went back into B/Head to the town Hall. where landican said they are open from 2 till 4 monday to Friday. Wrong the desk was. Anyway i have to phone tomorrow befor i go. Hopfully they will have the st cath's index for he 1900. I am going to look for the death in <1936>is that about right? then you can send for a death certificate Celia

Hi Andrea well i am sorry to say that after looking through 3 years of burials for Rake lane. There wasnt any macnabs at all in the cemetary 4 the years 1934/5/6.It was the first time i had used those records and i was asked what religion the family was. It seems different ones are seperate. I was then asked if the burial was cemetary or church grave yard. It dawned on me after all these years the difference between the two ::)  these again are seperate records. The Town hall did not have the St Caths death index as i suspected. The only place that i know of that has the complete St/c/I is Liverpool. Where you will definitely find the death of thomas. once you know where he died and the date. I may be able to look for the burial again. My Grandad was on the record but i knew when he died. if i had known about those burial records three years ago i wouldnt have worn a groove in the cemetary path  :)after spending 2 years previously looking for his grave :D On the record it gives the reference number.I have seen numbers on the very bottom of some grave stones so maybe they are connected. name, age, plot number, and i think occupation.I was suprised it also gave an address not a full one. and the name of the person that conducted the service. so that's very helpfull, there is a member of roots chat that  knows who goes to liverpool .cant remember who ???

hmm.....I came from Newcastle in the North East of England origionally and we have a Rake Lane cemetery too! it's in North Shields. If you have no luck in the Liverpool area then check that one out too. North Shields is on the North side of the River Tyne entrance and a well known fishing port :)

Just a thought *grin* seeing as you mentioned your relative being a mariner

Hello Adele If you have read this topic you will see i havent been much help to Anrea. so have left a message for her for when she comes back. I have a gut feeling though that the family might have moved on. beacause i found deaths in stockport. from 1929. It's handy to know that there is another Rake Lane cemetery though.

Celia

Peter thanks for the reminder Will leave that to Andrea

Hi Celia...and Adele....thank you for all your help...and time..
I know my Ggrandfather lived in Seacombe in 1901 as it says so on the census...and his daughter(my grandmother) Isabel(Leonora, my mother was born there) and also two of his sons all continued  living in Seacombe as well...one of the sons Frederick worked for Camel Laird shipbuilders.
My cousin Julie said her grandfather and his father were buried in the cemetery..Earlston cemetery in Liscard/Wallasey, which I found was Rake Lane.
I dont know of any other explanation other than maybe Thomas and Leonora were buried in Liverpool..and what makes if worse is not knowing when they both died.
I will ask floridagirl if she can help....thank you so much for all the effort you have put in. Its lovely to know there are people out there that want to help.
Cheers
Andrea ;D

Hi Andrea, I have been doing a bit of research for another person.also looking for a Mc in Cheshire this one in the late 1920's. As i was working my way back through the postal directorey for 1920/21 i came across
McNab.
Norman Steward 3 Alice Avenue Parry St Seacombe
In another postal book it was
3 Alice Avenue Andrew St Seacome.
In the Gores Directory for 1912 i came across
Mrs Isabella McNab 11 Chatsworth Avenue Walton.
The following one i cant remember which year book i found it in ::) because the Mc i was looking for wasnt in the book.I didnt want to get confused so put it back on the shelf ::)
McNab
Frederick Clark Fitter 34 Marion St Birkenhead

Thank you Celia...thats a great help...at least it shows that two of the sons lived nearby, one in Seacombe and the other in Birkenhead. I found a couple of births which could be Fredericks children only as they both have Clarke as a second name...I will keep looking tomorrow...
Good luck with your search.
Cheers and goodnight

Hi Celia,

Thank you so much for the offer.  They are all buried in the same grave.  John Thomas Lutas, Phoebe Lutas (nee Roberts) who I think died 1947, John Lutas and Doris Anderson (nee Lutas) who died in 1962.  I have found a Phoebe Roberts born in 1864 but from the 1891 census, Phoebe was born in 1870.  So really only trying to find her true date of birth.

Hi Jan If it's  only Phoebe's correct age you want and the age she died. And she is in the family grave i will only have to look up one burial to find the plot and grave stone Ifit is still standing.Where have you looked for her birth and where was she born ???. I will see what i can find in regard to the Family burial On Wednesday.  Then if you want and i find the stone i could take a photo. Thats if it ever stops raining ;D Meanwhile if anyone sents you info on Phoebe's  true age let me know.

Hi Celia

I found Phoebe and John Thomas on the 1901 census and it said she was 31 so that would make her birth date 1870.  Also found her in the 1891 Census and it said she was 21.  Can't find any record of her birth.  The census said she was born in Liverpool.  But for some reason my Aunt thought she was born in Wrexham.  I do know she had a sister Mary and a sister Pem ... have no idea what Pem was short for.

Thank you so much for checking, it would be a great help!

Hi Jan I forgot the Archives are closed on a Wednesday they are only open Thursday  Friday & Saturday Morning.
So I went this morning. There was no point in looking for For the burial of Phoebe. The year Margine is to wide, As you gave a date of 1962 for John Lutas and Doris Anderson. I started in 1961 and went through to 1963. Not one Lutas did i find. The problem seems to be that as i have said different religions. Catholic, C.O.E, Jewish and so on all have thier own burial registers. They also have thier own Burial plots. so if your family was other than C.O.E. (Church Of England) say Catholic i would not find your family on the C.O.E film. The one i use. The other thing is that different branches of the same surname Say two brother families have thier own family grave. I have expained this for others who might not know of this. Religion is an important factor in finding a grave.
Now having said that ;D I did find 1 Anderson she was
Ada Fanny Anderson Buried on 7th May 1963 age 78
Abode. 9 Ellesmere Grove, New Brighton. She is buried in plot 22c. I know that plot so if this is yours let me know.

Hi Jan my time is my own and love looking up burials as long as i am given enough info. It 's somthing to do during our long dreary winters. The Archives i visit is also easy for me  to get to. As this is Andrea's Topic i might start my own, in case anyone else ask's  me to  do a look up. I cant offer because i am a learner ;D Dont fret to much about not finding your birth date. It's only a month ago  That i was sent some info giving me the age of my G.G.Grandparents. I waited four years for that. :)

Good luck in the future with you tree.

Hi Celia,

Got Phoebe's marriage certificate.  She was born in 1870, father was William Edward Roberts.  She lived on Wilson street.  My Aunt still claims she is buried in Rake Lane Cemetary.  She thinks she died in the 1940s. Slowly I'm getting a little more information ... but at least I'm getting some!  Thanks for anything you can help me with.

Sorry I didnt know you had replied to me...as I hadnt had an email notification...anyway..thank you for that information...I will keep that in case if applies to my McNabs. I am at a loss at where my lot are buried..I had thought that as their children lived in the Wirral, that the parents would be buried there too. Maybe they went on a world cruise...:-) I expect they will turn up somewhere, if only in my dreams.
Hope your wrist is better...

Hi Andrea I was just about to close down ,but checked my post first. I have had some help from a gentlman in regards to the plots in the cemeterey. They are not marked, i have to go by the map. The plots look easy to find on an airial view but when i am on the ground i get lost   :(I took an inscription from a grave Stone, Ages ago but i haven got a date of death :( i cant remember if there wasnt one or i didnt take. I have been back loads of times and i still cant find it. Now i am more organized ;D
The McNab i mentioned buried in plot 23c in 1963. I cannot understand because i found the plot, but it hasnt got one single Headstone on it. Only a few cut outs of the grass where plants have been put. When i asked why there was no headstones the gentleman didnt know. He did say it was a paupers plot though. Thats the bit i dont understand. I mean if it was 1863 i could because the family may not have had the money for one, but 1963 ???
Havent looked for the other one yet.I must find out what D (sub) means ???CeliaP.S .Dont forget to tick notify me of replies. you dont need to do it on every post, only the first

My Great Grandparents are buried here.
Register of grants #2692 purchased on Oct 26, 1922
It is in section 11 and numbered 186
1st interment: Sept 23, 1922  MARY ANN  (Simpson) TAYLOR   66 years
2nd interment: Oct 30, 1928  WILLIAM THOMAS TAYLOR  73 years

Registered in the General Register of Private graves Vol 1  Folio 152

A WILLIAM JOHN TAYLOR is also buried there on Dec 23, 1963  aged 80

I will be in London for 5 days later this month and would love to be able to visit the graveside. Can anyone check if they are indeed there and where located at the cemetery. If I can't make it over when I am in London, is there anyone willing to take photos for me?

Thanks so very much  :)

Hi Karen  since you have all the information it wont take long to verify your burial and find the plot number.
Hopfully it will be at the top end of cemetery.Which is on a slight hill. And not the lower end where the ground is very soft with all the rain. At this time even the more recent stones are falling like nine pins :(  The Archive is only open All dayThur/Fri &  Sat Morning. So i can go next week,
once i have the plot number i should find the stone,
and will take a photo for you

Thanks so VERY much Celia for your very kind offer!

I'm just not sure I will be able to have my cousin drive me over to Birkenhead area when I am in London at the end of this month.
Last year I was able to spend a rainy afternoon at the Library in Birkenhead but did Not have this new info.
Since my trip I have found the Taylors on the 1891 and 1901 census...even my Grandfather in the Royal Artillery Army.
The addresses I know of so far are:
5 Napier St, Birkenhead (daughter's birth record - 1899)
18 Eastham St, Birkenhead (1891 census)
28 Beaconsfield Rd, Seacombe (1901 census)
My Aunt says they both died at home at 40 Edith Road, Seacombe

Wonder if "any" of these homes are still standing?

Will be anxiously awaiting any news you find for me!

Karen
Title: Re: Rake Lane Cemetery
Post by: Clannessie on Friday 05 November 04 20:19 GMT (UK)
Sorry...another question Celia:

When you mentioned "The Archive" being open certain days...just what is the Archive? Is it the building at the cemetery?

And I understand about falling cemetery stones. Luckily when I found my Grandparents grave up in Clydebank, Scotland someone had put up wood slats to keep it standing. Many stones had fallen and like my son said...Mom you're lucky theirs wasn't lying face down or you'd never would have found it.

One more thing. To get my own copies of the death records how do I go about that? My aunt says my Great Grandparents deaths were probably a few days before the interment. So if I don't have an "exact" date for their deaths, how do I order a copy?

Thanks again
Karen

I wonder if you have noticed any of the old houses in Rake Lane. Are there are any Victorians still standing.
My great grandfather lived at Fountains Lodge which I only discovered this week was /is in Rake Lane? Love to know if its still there and what it's like.

AND have you come across any Shearer or Pomeroy gravestones in your wanderings?? We've lost a collection of ancestors who all lived in that area.

Hello anigran Rake lane has still got some Victorian houses. It's a long main Road with a mish mash of various style houses.built at different time's. I  never heard of fountains Lodge before. If you can give me some information as to when he lived there and his name. I might be able to find a reference to it in the Library and find some information for you. I have two Topics, Celia's Rake lane in which i will look up burials given the right information.( winter Job) If an ancestor lived in the area and the address is known . I take photo's of the house as well, the other Topic is Inscriptions merchant Sea men & R.N.R  of which i have now finished adding to till next year ( summer job)When you reply can you reply to Celia's Rake lane.  I thought this topic had been locked. But maybe because i didn't start it the mind was changed. will ask about it.
