Title: McGRORY/McRORY - Irish Connections?
Post by: pmcrory on Tuesday 21 February 06 19:43 GMT (UK)
Researching the McGrory/McRory family from Donegal.  I'm trying to find a link between these and the Scottish McGrorys, who seem to be around the Paisley/Glasgow areas.

I'm particularly keen to trace the family links between the two countries; when did they come from Ireland?  Who came over?  I have an extensive tree from the Donegal side, but just can't link it to Scotland.  Can anyone help?

Paul

Hi Paul,

I don't know if it helps but the MacRory's were Lords of Bute from the 12th century. Perhaps further back than you require, but perhaps the journey was from Scotland to Ireland, and vice versa for centuries past.

Thanks very much for that - I didn't know!  Would you know where I might be able to get more info on that topic?  It's an angle that I hadn't anticipated.

However, I suspect that there was some movement of my family to Scotland, but I just don't know when.  Not sure if the 'McGrory' spelling is much to go on here.  I used to get my name spelt in many ways when I was at school, I remember.  I'd be similarly interested to look at the lineage of Scottish McGrorys such as James McGrory, the footballer, who I understand had something of a reputation in his day.  Any relatives of his out there?

Hi Paul,

A google search of "MacRory" + "Genealogy" brings up quite a lot of information.

I'm sure there must be some celtic supporting genealogists out there who would know about Jimmy McGrory's lineage.

Good luck,

Grothenwell

I have a bit (a very small bit) of info on McCrorie.   All I know is that they were in the Irvine area of Ayrshire around 1860 but haven't investigated too far back.   One of them married into my family - details if interested.  Don't know where they originated.

Hi Paul,

Our family has a Margaret McGrory, born abt. 1902 in Ireland.  Daughter of Joseph McGrory & Mary Farren.

Margaret married in Glasgow 1920, to Robert Morrison.
Her 2nd marriage was to George Stewart of Duntocher.

Do any of these names tie in with your Donegal people?

Deb

Janet McCrorie of Irvine married William McNair 31 Dec 1862. Their daughter, Elizabeth Watters/Waters is my g-grandmother.  Janet's parents were Thomas and Elisabeth Waters McCrorie.  Is the same family you refer to? I have limited info on them, but would be grateful to compare what we have. Thank you.

There is obviously a connection with this family, but I’m not sure how it works out.

Isaac (sometimes Ivie) McCrorie married Sarah Waters in Irvine 20 Sept 1867 (IGI)
Children:  (per IGI)
John Waters McCrorie born 2 December 1867 Tarbolton
Thomas McCrorie born 18 May 1870 Tarbolton  (father listed as Ivie)
Jessie McCrorie born 8 April 1872 Tarbolton (Parents  listed as Ivie McCrorie and Sarah Waterson)
Jeannie McCorie born 3 January 1874 (Parents  listed as Ivie McCrorie and Sarah Waterson)

Jessie married my great grandmother’s brother Alexander McDonald Moffat on 17 March 1893 in Ochiltree.
Children:
Sarah Watters Moffat born  11 Jul 1893 Coylton
Joan Hope McDonald Moffat born  1 Jun 1898 died 11 May 1899 (Measles)
(both these girls are named for their grandmothers)
There may have been other children but I have not been able to find any more.

Jessie died 22 August 1900 aged only 28.   Alexander lost his wife, father, daughter and mother within 15 months.   He is in lodgings in 1901, Sarah is with a Moffat aunt.

Hello
We are doing research on Robert Morrison.  Were his parents Jeanie mcReynolds and Thomas Morrison?

Yes!  We have the same family.

and from the PM you sent me, you have answered a question for me, before I got the chance to ask it!

you wrote -
Looking for info on Robert Morrison Fanny Smith born in Ireland
also Robert Morrison son of Thomas Morrison son of above any help lived Duntocher old kilpatrick

I suspected that the Tommy Morrison that married Jeannie McReynolds was the son of Robert Morrison and Fanny Smith, but I had no seen his marriage certificate to prove it.  So thank you for confirming that for me!   :D

How are you related to the family?

I (and a few others on this forum) am related to you on two fronts -
Margaret Morrison, daughter of Alexander Morrison (son of Robert and Fanny)  married my great Uncle John Stewart

and Margaret (Greta) McGrory, widow of Robert Morrison, (son of Tommy and Jeannie) married my great uncle George Stewart.

George Stewart and John Stewart were two of the sons of of William Stewart and Flora McLure McIntyre Murray.  Their sister Margaret was my grandmother.

go here to see a picture of George in his HLI uniform -
