Title: Can anyone read an old will?
Post by: Anjo on Wednesday 29 September 04 16:20 BST (UK)
I have acquired an old will which I can barely make out especially as it is written in olde enlish. Can anyone help me make sense of it.  It was written in 1656. Am I allowed to attach it to the site for help or do I have to converse with some one privately about it. All help would be marvelous.

If it's too big to attach to the site, you could send it to me in a personal e-mail and I'll do my best.

I would love to have a go - not that I have done this sort of thing before - but I love a challenge!

Anjo,

I have done this before and offer help and advice third in the queue: I'm please to let someone else have a go first.

Nell

Thanks guys didn't think I would get this response. The file is too large to attach to this site so if you are still willing to have a go I will have to send personally to you ok. Hope you all have good eyes!!

Do you have a local museum or archive - maybe you could ask them to take a look too ?.

If you've had no luck so far, or need a second opinion, I'll give it a go.

Anjo, I've deciphered most of the first part of the will, but then there's too much of it I can't make out.  I hope someone more expert can do better.

Me too.  If I can read my boss's handwriting (which  looks like a spider crawling across the page after falling into a pot of ink) I'm sure I can read Olde English :)

I've had a quick look but can't make out any names which is I guess what you really want.  I can make out the odd legal term and I think there's a mention of "Anne my wife".  About 2/3rds of the way down he seems to leave his daughter "all household stuffs which her grandmother appointed for her".

I'll look at it again later but I'm going slightly crossed eyed at the moment.

Sorry I couldn't be much more help.

 ;D

Hi to every one who helped me with the will. I now have a decent copy of what it was all about and it all makes sense.
I really appreciate everyones time and trouble.

I would still like to hear from some people I sent out a copy to as it would be nice to compare, but I no longer need any more offers of help.

Thanks again and a big pat on the back for all that helped.

I would have been lost without you

All the best Anjo

Where are all my willing helpers gone. I am still waiting for your replies.
I'd love to hear what you thought of it. Please let me know whether you could make it out or not. Thanks Anjo

Hi Anjo,

I have translated about half the will, but I still have some holes in it and I just don't like handing in stuff half done.

So will keep trying with translationand get back to you. The writing is so small and so hard of reading it, bit harder than what I thought, but enjoy doing puzzles :D

Sorry Anjo.  I presumed that you'd got it sorted because you mentioned that Little Nell had given you a good account of it.  I didn't think you still needed it looking at.  Perhaps if you post what Little Nell has already done then maybe myself and others could fill in the missing bits.

Yes little Nell did a good account but it would be good to see what other people made of it. Here is her account any thing you can add would be great.
