Title: Purcell - Muckalee
Post by: lisa23 on Thursday 23 February 06 04:23 GMT (UK)
I trying to find James Purcell and Margaret Brennan and their family. I know of 4 brothers, Tobias b 1806, Thomas b 1807, Phillip b 1807 & Michael b 1823. They were all born in Muckalee. Tobias married  Bridget Bourke in 1828, Phillip married Julia Lacey in 1842, Thomas married Elizabeth Maher in 1836. I think these 3 brothers married in Muckalee and Michael married Mary Gorman in Australia. All brothers immigrated  to Australia. My question is, are there any other children of James Purcell and Margaret Brennan? How do I go about finding this information or anything about this family?

I am tracing Tobias ( Toby) Purcell and Bridget Bourke (burk ).  Do you have anything on them or further back.  They had 5 children Catherine, John, Mary, Ellen and James.

I have information on John Purcell and forward.

thank you

Neil

Hi Neil
I have some info on the Purcell family. Need to know what you want to know. There were actually six children. Margaret was the first born. Personal message me your email address and I will contact you through there. I descend from Tobias's brother Michael.

Wonder if anyone can help.  GGGGrandfather Tobias Purcell died in Launceston, aged 84 in June 1884.  His daughter was Elizabeth and a Catherine Purcell signed her marriage certificate.  In the death notice it stated that Tobias was a farmer, formerly of Trantham, Victoria.  I know Elizabeth was Irish.  So, my query is, is he the Tobias Purcell convict tried in Carlow came out on the convict ship kinnear in 1842.  Or is this the Tobias Purcell who died in Victoria 1876 aged 70.  Unfortunately, one convict record states the convict as age 38 the other at age 30.

Thanks
Caroline

My Grandfather was Tobias Purcell of Kempsey NSW, born1890. His father was John Purcell born 1860, Redfern Sydney married to Margaret Smyth . His father was Tobias Purcell born 1837 Muckalee co. Kilkenny married to Ann Ryan Sydney 1921 who was born in Tipperary1838. Tobias' father was John Purcell born Muckalee 1811. John was married to Bridget Nolan born 1813. John's father was James Purcell born 1790 Muckalee married to Margaret ? born1791.

I presume all the other Purcells who have emigrated to Australia from Muckalee are connected. Does anyone have more information about John Purcell 1811 and James Purcell 1790? Also, what is the significance of the name Tobias which appears through a number of branches of the family?  Is the Purcell family still dominant in Muckalee?
Thanks Mel

Hi Lisa, Neil, Caroline and Mel,

I am researching Purcell/Quinn/Leonard/Darcy in Muckalee and St Johns, Kilkenny.

I can’t link your Purcell family to mine as I have only just started research into this family, however, as we go along we may find a connection. I have been fortunate to have had a lot of help with searching Irish records and finding resources etc, from Pastmagic and Shane147 which may prove valuable to you too. See this link:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,484689.0.html

Mel, Lisa and Neil, when did your Purcell family immigrate to Australia and do you know the name of the ship that they travelled on?

My 2xgreat grandparents, Patrick and Margaret Quinn and family settled in Newcastle NSW after arriving in 1854 (they married in Muckalee in 1853). Patrick’s mother or grandmother (I am yet to sort this out as I have conflicting information), was Catherine Purcell, born c1794 or c1773. It would be great to find a link.

Margaret :)

Hi Margaret,
My branch of the Purcell's seem to have arrived in Australia either in 1858 or 1859. There is some confusion as there is another Tobias Purcell who arrived on the Parsee in September 1859 he is not my Tobias as he brought children with him. My Tobias married Ann Ryan at St Mary's Church Sydney in 1859 and had a son John my great Grandfather in Redfern in 1860. The confusion arises because the different branches of the family are constantly using the same names. I am trying to find information about Tobias's father John Purcell (1811 Muckalee) who was married to Bridget Nolan (1813) and John's father James(1790 Muckalee) married to Margaret (1791) perhaps Margaret Brennan.

Hi - My ancestor was Michael Purcell b 1834 in Kilkenny - Tobias' brother.   Michael's parents were John Purcell and Bridget Nolan who also came to Australia in 1853 on board the "Talavera".   The only information I have is according to the shipping records is that John's parents were James Purcell who was alive in 1853 and Margaret who had died earlier.   Would love to help with more information.

I am new to this forum.  My g.grandmother was Bridget Purcell (known as Blanche) baptised 1854 St Mary of the Angels Church, Geelong Victoria.  Her parents were Michael Purcell and Anne Sanders (or Saunders) arrived Port Melbourne, Victoria on the ship Australia 20/9/1853.  Michael's age is given as 20 and Anne was 19 on arrival. I believe they were from Kilkenny.  Is this family related to any of the Purcell families mentioned on this page? I am just commencing Irish research.
Thank you
Marilyn  :)

Hi Marilyn,
So excited to get your message.   We have been on holidays.  Yes Bridget/Blanche was my g grandfather's sister.   We had great difficulty finding Ann's arrival in Australia as they didn't come with the rest of the family and Michael's name was with them.   Shipping records can be a bit misleading.
I have also been in touch with another of Bridget's descendants.
I can tell you lots about the family and am interested to know where you fit in.
Can't wait to hear from you.

Hi Lynette
I too am excited to find a family connection.
Bridget or Blanche as our family knew her was my g.grAndmother. She married Nathaniel Ferguson in Sydney 1879. My grandfather Sidney Raymond Ferguson was their first born son.
Sadly I don't remember my grandfather well as he died when I was only 3 yrs old. My grandmother Helen (Sidney's wife) lived to 93 - but she didn't pass on anything about that part of the family. I think I may have an old photo of Blanche - passed down to me. Nathaniel died suddenly in 1892 leaving Blanche with 4 children the youngest only about 3 yrs old. Are you living here in Australia or Ireland?
Hope to hear more about the family background from you. I would love to know why they came to Australia? Perhaps searching for gold?  Perhaps you can private message me. Not sure how that works yet but will check.
Cheers. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,
I am in Australia. Where are you.   I haven't worked out the Roots Chat system yet for private messaging.  I have passed on your last message to another descendant of Blanche.
John Purcell, Michael's father, had brothers in Victoria before John and Bridget (Nolan) came to Sydney with their family in 1853.  Another brother of Michael, Tobias, came a bit later.
I think things were so grim in Ireland that Australia sounded a better proposition.   Assisted passages for suitable people were also advertised in the Irish papers.
I have found a lot of information also about Blanche's sisters, two of whom moved to the Northern Rivers of NSW.
I have a photo of Ann Purcell (Nolan) but not one of Michael.
We will have to work out the private message system.
Lynette

Hi Lynette
Great to hear from you. You certainly have a lot more info about the Purcell family than I do. It would be great to speak to you or meet up and compare notes. I live in Lake Macquarie area about 2 hours north of Sydney. Where are you?
Re pm. Did you read the hint  I think we have to do 3 messages each before we can do the pm.

Hi again Lynette
I would love to know more about Blanche's sisters family too. I heard a "tale"  that Blanche was ostrasised by her family - but not sure if that is true. I have family in Taree (my fathers side) that I visit. Are any of the family living near there?
Cheers
Marilyn.

Hi Marilyn
I have sent a PM (I think) to you.  It would be good to meet.  I'm near Hornsby.  Another descendant of Blanche's is keen to make contact too.  Did you know there are a couple of "Purcell Castles" in Ireland, one in Kilkenny and one in Tipperary?

Hi,
My husband is from the Purcell family and i have been doing some research over the years.  Reading these posts I can't seem to fit anyone in but here goes.

Furthest back i can go is a church marriage record for Philip Purcell address Blackwood marries Mary Cahill on 24/09/1832 in the parish/district Lisdowney County Kilkenny. Age and parents names not recorded.  2 witnesses - John Dunne and Anastasia (Ansty) Walsh.

I also found the following children they had

Judith - date of baptism 18/9/1833 address Freshford Co Kilkenny Sponsor/informant Oliver Blanchfield and Mary Purcell.

John - date of baptism 19/5/1835 address Freshford Co Kilkenny Sponsor/informant Andrew Maher and Bridget Malone.

Bridget -  date of baptism 14/2/1837 address Freshford Co Kilkenny Sponsor/informant Patrick Blansfield and Bridget Delahunty.

Margaret - date of baptism 02/06/1838 address Freshford Co Kilkenny Sponsor/informant Edmund Purcell and Mary Blansfield.

Patrick - date of baptism 15/12/1840 address Freshford Co Kilkenny Sponsor/Informant Daniel Healey and Bridget Maher.

My husband's line was from John Purcell. He married Annie Gray in Glasgow 31/12/1864. They regularly went back and forward to Dublin as they had 2 children born there Mary Katherine in 1866 and William Patrick Allen in 16/2/1868. 3 more were born in Glasgow.

There seems to be no information on the brothers and sisters of John. I was fearing the worst and that they had suffered in the famine. I think they must have moved to Dublin at some point as that's where they went back to on visits. It's heartening to hear that some may have went to Australia or New Zealand.

Hope this helps someone!

Hello! I am currently doing research on the Purcell family. I have traced back 3x great grandfather,  William Purcell who was born in Kilkenny in 1828. The only child of his I have listed is James Bernard Purcell (1866-1960). I am currently at a roadblock.

After reading through this thread, I believe I am related to the more thoroughly researched Purcell members, and I am hoping to make that connection. I understand some of the Purcells stayed in Ireland, and others traveled to Australia. My direct ancestors traveled to Michigan and I am hoping to get more details on these events. Please let me know if you can be of any help.

Having decided to take a break from the brickwall that is my Northern Ireland ancestors, I'm now  looking into my husband's family tree who I believe has a connection to the Purcell's mentioned in this conversation. His great grandfather was Thomas Purcell, son of Tobias Purcell and Ann Ryan, with Tobias being the son of John Purcell and Bridget Nolan. I would be thrilled to chat and share information with anyone that is also connected to this family. Regards, Julie
