I am busy tracing my family of Dicksons who lived in Canonbie. My grgr grandparents were Francis Dickson and Mary Hutton. The address given for them from the census of 1861 until the cesus of 1901 is Slackhead, Canonbie. I have been unable to find this on a modern map so I wondered if anyone knew where it was so I can have a look the next time I go up. ???

Hi, my husband's gtgt grandparents were also Francis Dickson and Mary Hutton. I have just started looking into this in more detail. His gt grandmother was Mary Ann Dickson, she married a Yorkshireman and moved there.
I have also come across a Prison Register Index search result for Francis Dickson, a coal miner living in Canonbie (so I am assuming it is the same person as above) who was jailed in 1846 when 21. NRS reference HH21/49/2 p44. I havent sent off for the full information yet, do you know anything about this?
I havent found his marriage yet but I assume it was before 1850 as his first child was born then. So he was not in prison for long!
Any info welcome and would be happy to give you anything I have that you may not have come across.

You might be able to work it out from this map.

Hi - I'm distantly related to Francis through his brother Walter.
The National Library of Scotland has OS Maps, Slackhead is located just outside of Canonbie village. NW of Canonbie Station/Canonbie Colliery at Rowanburn.
ScotlandsPlaces is also a good website to find more information, Francis can be found listed in the OS Name Books - responsible for the spelling of various places.

Compare the old map with the satellite view and you will see that Slackhead has vanished.
