The problem is this, The Charles Topham Son of Jeremiah I am looking for says he was born in Belgrave/Leicester. a friend has been right throught the 1841 census but can not find any Tophams except two deaths. If anyone knows anything about the Charles Topham that I have Listed Or his father Jeremiah could you let me know please. I would really apreciate trying to make a conection with the charles from Leicester if I can.
My Charles Topham says he was a widower when he married his second wife. so would be intrested in finding his first marriage. he could have been born anywhere from 1829 to 1836. Cheers LC from OZ :)

Hi
I have found the Charles who was born in Leicester in the 1881 census. It seems strange that the Charles who was baptised in Derbyshire had a brother called Snowdon and the Charles who was born in Leicester named one of this children Snowdon.
I would think that this was more than just a coincidence. Do you have the 1881 information ?
5 Alfred Street. London, Middlesex.
Chas. Topham 45 born Leicester. Joiner
Annie Topham 34 born Brighton
Frederick Topham son 10 born London. Scholar
Snowdon Topham son 8 born London. Scholar
Sarah Topham dau 5 born London, Scholar
Annie Topham dau 1 born London
also in the 1851 census index of Derbyshire there is another
Snowdon aged 74.
Do you want this information?

Hi Sunflower, Yes it is very strange, thats why where trying to find out weather, either their related or this is the same family. so would appreciate any or all info on this family in Derbyshire or any other snowdons as it is a very unusual name and where pretty sure its a family name passed down through generations. the 1881 Census I have and we are direct decendents of that Snowdon Topham. Its a family mystrey as to why Charles says he was born in Leicester when we can find no trace of him or family there at all. So where looking at the Derby Topham family as names and ages seem to fit but we need to con firm it or rule them out. thank you very much for your help Cheers Linda. ;D

today searching through the Derby Mercury newspapwer for 1874, i found a most interesting case of Snowden Topham aged 33, he Killed a man in a Brawl, in a House at Court No1 Orchard Street Derby, and at the end he was found guilty of Manslaughter, not murder, the victim picked up sixpence droped by Topham and claimed it was his, he gave it back to Topham but then Smashed his head through a Window, and fought with him on a sofa, where the victim was stabed in the top of his groin severing an Artery, having not yet looked at the sentance, but i was wondering if he was Tranported rather than Hung as he dose not appear on the census after 1871.

Hi I find this article very intresting as i think this can be a family member, His father being Jeremiah Topham. snowdons brother Charles also had a son and called him Snowdon Topham and he emigrated to Australia in 1911 he is my husbands grandfather. Any further infomation on Snowdon Topham that you found would be much appreciated, thanks for your help L.C

hi when i go to the Library, later in the week, i will get some print outs of the newspaper, this is the same Snowdon as on the 1861 census at Garden Street, Derby with father Jeramiah, at the time of the murder he was living at Albion Place with a woman calling herself his wife ,though they were not married, i have looked in my book Capital Punishment in Derbyshire and he is not listed, so i assume he was transported, the paper i was reading has a very extensive story coverig many witness statments, the doctor that attended, the policemen who attendad, the following newespaper was on another reel that i have not seen yet, to get the sentance, but has this was i found so interesting, i am going to get all the articles i can on this, so will pass on to you what i find.

Having read them myself,I would have to agree ;D they are indeed a wonderful insight into how life was back then.
Not only is Snowdon Topham mentioned but lots of others too-and if anyone is researching the Shaw family there's lots of them here too ;)
I would suggest you list a few of the names mentioned, Gary- perhaps it might help another Rootschatter out there? Perhaps a new thread should be started too?
And that street map of Derby back then- is absolutely wonderful.
Once again thanks for all your hard work- it must have taken you ages ;)
