Title: Soldiers in the First World War
Post by: Willow 4873 on Monday 04 October 04 14:53 BST (UK)
Does anyone have a copy of the CD containing the names of all the soldiers who served in the First World War who could look someone up for me?

I am looking for my Great Uncle Mark Hilton. Family history is that he died in the First World War aged about 18 (my brother is named after him) but I can't find any reference or birth certificates to him or his brother Luke and it is really getting to me!

He was born in Wolverhampton and I believe he may have served in the Staffordshire Regiment as did his brother William and half brother Matthew Ralph

I have tried the CWGC but there is no mention of him there. The link is  http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx if anyone is interested

If anyone has family who lived in and around Wolverhampton the Express & Star have a virtual cenotaph on their website. The link is http://www.expressandstar.com/es/heritage/cenotaph/

There is also a good site about the war memorials in Wolverhampton on Wolverhampton Remembers and the link is http://www.warmem.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

Would be glad of any suggestions on where to try and find them next  :)

I really am getting nowhere fast!

Tried the medal rolls - no Mark listed. I am beginning the wonder if it is his middle name not his first. Have found a Henry M Hilton on the rolls list service number DM2/11824 and I do know that my G Grandparents had a son named Henry who died before he was 2 so I wonder if Mark was named Henry Mark?

Is there any chance someone could look it up for me?

I am also interested in a Luke Hilton service number 53829 because this might be his brother - there again I might be shooting at pie in the sky?!

I did find Matthew Ralph their half brother service number 3618

Why can none of this be simple or better still why can't the BMD have all their records in full with access from the internet so we can just look someone up

Yeah yeah I know - pigs might fly and then the price of bacon would go up!

As the old saying goes - you can choose your friends but not your family. Would be happy if I could just find some of mine ............... x

The Cd you refered to is only for men who died during the first world war. I have checked your second request, there is no reference to an Henry Mark. I presume Luke survived so there is no way in checking him out via the CD.

In regards to sites containing reference to Rolls of Honour and War Memorials for Wolverhampton see my site as below.

Hi all, I was looking around for war memorial stuff today and Doug I found your site which I have to say is excellent. Unfortunately none of my rellies on there, except maybe one?

Willow did you ever find anything on Samuel  Hilton? I haven't seen anything. Might help if my dad finds those medals!

Matthew Ralph's medal card says:

South Staffs reg, private 3618 and then..
Worcs reg, private, 39919

is this the same person in 2 regiments?

If it is, then he's on the cwgc site:
died 31/10/1916, Serre Rd Cemetery no.2, Somme, France.

Doug I saw on your site on heath park memorial an M J Ralph wondered if that's connected.

What happened to James Ralph (Matthew's brother) in the Staffords?

Either way, seems the names didn't bring much luck as Matthew and James' nephew was my great uncle James Matthew Kendrick b1904 Wolverhampton.

He died aged 36 on 11/01/1941 in Croydon, civilian war casualty. Couldn't find anything on him on Doug's site either, but I'm not really too clued up on how/where/when people were commemorated.

Hiya Rachel

I haven't been able to find anything on Joseph at all. If there is a Matthew Ralph listed as in the Staffords that one is probably ours because William my grandfather also served in the Staffords (I dont mean Joseph I mean Samuel! Brain not working 2night)

I haven't found anything yet for James

That makes 8 rellies that were lost in the 2 world wars

Hello Willow, Think this is James Ralph on 1901.

The camps shrapnel barracks and royal horse infirmary, Charlton, London.

James Ralph 21 Driver, royal field artilery. W-ton, Staffs.

Thanks for the quick reply, by Joseph I take it you mean Samuel, or James Matthew K?

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh another infamous brain bleed LOL. :D

Btw someone just e-mailed me an image from 1851 for Hannah Boffy (Harriet Mears/James Mears sis) but my pc is buggered so I can't see it.

Maybe I can e-mail you it and you can transcribe what it says? I AM BLIIIIIIND! *laughs*

Thanx Doug

Could you do a check on the other Samuel Hiltons for me? That isn't the one I'm looking for. Mine was born about 1895 in Wolverhampton

Also I know you have a website about the war memorials in Wolverhampton. Do you happen to have a list of the names on each memorial? I don't even know if he is listed on one

Thanx Doug

Thats a great help I have checked all the memorials on your site but he doesn't appear to be on any of them.

There are several war graves in Bilston Cemetary - do you want me to take a note of the details when I'm over there and forward them on to you?

Is it possible that SKS could look up any records for GUNTER casualties in WW1 please? There is a possibility they were in the Welsh Guards or the "Queen's Regiment" (sorry I only have word of mouth to go by - no definite details). All lived in Glamorgan, S Wales.

I have located a medal card for a George E Gunter but I'm not sure if he is my relation? My Great Aunt is adamant that her Uncle (my G Grandfather's brother) George Elliot Gunter was lost in WW1 but the medal card I have found seems to indicate that he survived? She has also mentioned that "some of the other brothers were lost as well"???

Any information would be much appreciated  :)

Thaks for the offer, but I live 2 mins from the cemetery and have wandered around it many times.

Nigel
The answer to your question is no,SDGW gives where born, enlisted and residence on enlisting and also how the person died e.g killed in action died of wounds.
I will have a look on my SDGW for any Gunters

Regards Doug.
