Hi David,

I could not see your family in Faversham 1841.  Did they have any more children born elsewhere?  Perhaps we could look there.

Regards
Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for looking for me.

I'm not sure about any other children at present, but I know that by 1851 Stephen and Amelia were living in Reculver, Kent. Charles had by then moved to Cornwall (both he and his father were coastguards).

Regards

David

Hi David,

I am afraid I cannot look up Reculver 1841 as it is missing sorry about that.
Good luck with your research.

Hi David,

I am well-acquainted with your Monger family.  Several of my Faversham lines intermarried with Mongers and I completed extensive research of the family not only to chase down the line that were responsible for settling part of Western Australia, but, also, for another Monger descendant, Anthony Stebbing of Cornwall - a distant cousin of mine.  He prepared a paper awhile back for one of the society's in Kent.

At any rate, I have bags of Monger info. Here followeth only the tip of the iceberg.

Stephen MONGER [48]  (ascent: John, Henry, Henry, George, George) was christened on 6 Feb 1785 in Faversham, Kent, England. He was buried [49]  on 6 Jun 1867 in Faversham, Kent, England.

Stephen married Amelia [50]  about 1813. Amelia was born about 1793 in Canterbury, Kent, England. She died [51]  on 17 Nov 1878 in Herne Bay, Kent, England.

They had the following children:
i.   Daughter MONGER  was born about 1815.
ii.   Mary MONGER  was christened on 5 Aug 1816 in Faversham, Kent, England. She was buried on 7 Aug 1816 in Faversham, Kent, England.
iii.   Thomas MONGER 52  was christened on 31 Dec 1817 in Faversham, Kent, England.
iv.   Charles Stephen MONGER 53  was christened on 30 Jan 1820 in Faversham, Kent, England.
v.   Robert MONGER  was christened on 10 Mar 1822.
vi.   John MONGER  was born in Nov 1825. He died on 1 Jul 1903.

Will send additional generations by separate posts in order to help them straight.  I'm sure that once you get all this information under your belt you may want to contact me offline - email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message function to exchange email addresses - thankyou.  I think somewhere amongst my Monger files is the 1841 census data you requested.

Hi David,

Here's Stephen Monger's father:

John MONGER [27,28]  (Henry, Henry, George, George) was christened on 15 Jul 1744 in Faversham, Kent, England. He was buried [29]  on 9 Jun 1837 in Faversham, Kent, England.

John married [30]  Mary SLATER  on 29 Nov 1767 in Faversham, Kent, England. Mary was born about 1746. She was buried [31]  on 11 Aug 1818 in Faversham, Kent, England.

I have not found a christening for a Mary Slater in the vicinity of Faversham.  However, there is
a Henry and Mary Slater who christen one child at Faversham - Susan on 14 March 1762.  Henry
Slater was then buried on 6 Mar 1673 and the daughter, Susan Slater, was buried on 1 February
1764.  No marriage for Henry Slater and Mary has turned up in Faversham, either.  It may be
that this Mary Slater had been the wife and widow of Henry.  But further research is required
before this hypothesis can be adopted.

John and Mary had the following children:
i.   Mary Elizabeth MONGER  was christened on 5 Jun 1768 in Faversham, Kent, England. She was buried on 4 Nov 1768 in Faversham, Kent, England.

ii.   George MONGER  was christened on 4 Jun 1769 in Faversham, Kent, England. He was buried [32]  on 30 Aug 1850 in Faversham, Kent, England.

iii.   Henry MONGER  was christened on 4 Jun 1769.

iv.   Sarah MONGER  was christened on 25 Nov 1770 in Faversham, Kent, England. She was buried on 10 Mar 1773 in Faversham, Kent, England.

v.   Mary MONGER  was christened on 27 Oct 1771 in Faversham, Kent, England. She was buried on 11 Jan 1774 in Faversham, Kent, England.

vi.   John MONGER  was christened on 29 Nov 1772.

vii.   William MONGER  was christened on 21 Aug 1774. He was buried in 1865.

viii.   Edward MONGER  was christened on 30 Mar 1777. He was buried on 9 Dec 1845.

ix.   Stephen MONGER  was christened on 10 Jan 1779 in Faversham, Kent, England. He was buried on 4 Feb 1782 in Faversham, Kent, England.

x.   Ann Mary MONGER  was christened on 15 Oct 1780 in Faversham, Kent, England.

xi.   Mary Elizabeth MONGER  was christened on 2 Feb 1783 in Faversham, Kent, England.

xii.   Stephen MONGER  was christened on 6 Feb 1785. He was buried on 6 Jun 1867.  Married Amelia.

xiii.   Elizabeth MONGER  was christened on 15 Jun 1788 in Faversham, Kent, England.

xiv.   Sarah MONGER  was christened on 18 May 1791 in Faversham, Kent, England. She was buried on 22 May 1791 in Faversham, Kent, England.

Hi David,

Here's Stephen Monger's grandfather:

Henry MONGER  (Henry, George, George) was christened [24]  on 5 Jan 1724 in Faversham, Kent, England.

Henry married [25]  (1) Jane DANE  daughter of John DANE and Martha on 26 Feb 1743 in Harbledown, Kent, England. Jane was christened [26]  on 26 Dec 1723 in Ospringe, Kent, England. She was buried on 1 Jul 1750 in Faversham, Kent, England.

Jane, as she had delivered a child shortly before her own death, in the custom of the times, she
had to be re-baptised - purified almost - before she could be received back in church.  This
practise was referred to as "Churching".  Accordingly, I do not find it unusual to see a baptism
for a Jane Monger on the same day as her death.  Frances would have been the child she had
delivered.  Unfortunately, Frances did not survive either.

Henry and Jane had the following children:

i.   John MONGER  was christened on 15 Jul 1744. He was buried on 9 Jun 1837.  Married Mary SLATER.

ii.   Henry MONGER  was christened on 9 Mar 1746 in Faversham, Kent, England. He was buried on 22 Feb 1751 in Faversham, Kent, England.

iii.   Elizabeth MONGER  was christened on 3 Apr 1748 in Faversham, Kent, England.

iv.   Frances MONGER  was christened on 15 Jul 1750 in Faversham, Kent, England. She was buried on 16 Oct 1750 in Faversham, Kent, England.

Henry 2nd married Mary BRADFORD  on 16 Apr 1754 in Faversham, Kent, England.

They had the following children:

v.   Mary MONGER  was christened on 16 Nov 1755.

I am a descendant of the Charles Stephen Monger mentioned in this post, which I know is very old. This is how I am related to him:

Charles Stephen Monger (1820-1871) married Sarah Squibb Tollerfield. They had one child: Charles Stephen Monger (1844-1869) and he is my ancestor. When Sarah Squibb Tollerfield died Charles Stephen Monger (1820-1871) married Eleanor Holberton and had a number of children. He was a coastguard and lived in Dorset with his second family.

Charles Stephen Monger (1844-1869) married Mary Read. They had three children: Mary Ann Read Monger, Charles Stephen Monger (1867-1938), and Annie Amelia Monger. Charles Stephen Monger (1844-1869) was a blacksmith. He died instantly, aged 25, when he had a bad fall while walking a plank at work. I have recently gotten the brief newspaper article reporting on the inquest into his death.

Charles Stephen Monger (1867-1938) married Louisa Ann Colston. He was a licensed victualler in Castletown, Dorset at "The Albert Inn" - now known as "The Green Shutters." They had 8 children, one of which was my great grandmother, Ivy Victoria Monger. She moved to Australia in 1919.

Please reply to this if you have further information on this branch. I have a private tree on ancestry.com.

Cheers,
Michaela  :)

Perhaps I could correct a small mistake in Susan's (Zacktyr) first post, and add a little more detail around Charles Stephen's career.

Stephen Monger was nominated to the CG Service on 16 January 1822, with a first posting to Malhide. At the time of his appointment he was married with three living children. On 5 July 1823 he was promoted to Commissioned Boatman, then on 10 October 1823 to Chief Boatman, remaining at Malhide. It was on 23 November 1833 that he was transferred to Reculvers, from where he was superanuated on 24 August 1853 with £41 per annum.

Charles Stephen Monger was nominated to the CG service on 13 September 1842 from HMS Wellesley on her return from China, with a first posting to St Albans Head. For his service in this ship he was awarded the 1st China War Medal. He then made the following moves:

22 October 1847 to Turnchaple
25 Aug 1848 to Cawsands
11 June 1846 to Stonehouse Point
10 May 1849 to Portreath
22 May 1849 to St Agnes
23 Aug 1856 to Portland - he was still at this station in 1862.

However, during the Crimean War he was one of the 2600 CG's who served with the Fleet. He was on HMS Ajax in the Baltic, for which he was awarded the Baltic Medal.

I believe that two of Charles's brothers Thomas and John also joined the Navy, both entering the CG Service, although I have not yet proved the family relationship conclusively.

There are service records available online at the National Archives for both men. The Baltic medal roll again lists both men, with Thomas a serving CG at the start of the war, and John joining the CG's in January 1856, after the war was over.

Returning to Charles, I note that his transfer from Stonhouse Point, in May 1849, was as a direct result of him 'marrying a native'.

Hi Martin

My information on Charles' siblings comes entirely from this discussion board, so I couldn't confirm one way or the other whether Thomas and John were definitely Charles' brothers but I've got them in my tree right now and it certainly appears likely. Unfortunately, my research is entirely limited to the records available online at ancestry.com as I live in Australia.

I've had lots of fun looking up the medals and ships you mentioned in your previous posts!

The marriage in May 1849 would have been to Charles' second wife Eleanor Holberton so she is "the native."

This is a completely random comment, but I thought I'd mention it in case it rings any bells. For some reason it was said in my family for many years that we had German/Spanish somewhere along this branch but I've found no such thing (or on any other branches of my tree). It seems a bit odd that it would be entirely made up and I have remained slightly open to its possibility since the Mongers were coastguards. There are a few maiden names missing in the tree as it stands so I thought that might have been where it came in but I'm leaning more towards the idea that there isn't any German or Spanish at all at this point. I mean, in the 1871 census, Charles' mother Amelia has her birthplace recorded as Canterbury, Kent, so - even lacking a maiden name for her or a marriage record for her marriage to Stephen - it seems unlikely that the German or Spanish is from Amelia. As I said, a very random comment...one of my more way out lines of inquiry but I thought it was worth mentioning in case you can shed any light on the matter or help me put it to rest for good!

Cheers,
Michaela

Hi Michaela and Martin

I have read your posts with great interest and I'm grateful for the information.

I am descended from Charles Stephen and "the native", Eleanor Holberton. Their daughter Emma Jane Monger was born at Portland in 1859. She married Willam Bird Everton of County Tyrone who was a Prison Officer at Portland. When he moved to Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight, they settled there and this was where my mother, Charles Stephen's great-great-grandaughter, was born.

I somehow doubt I can add any more to your specific areas of interest!

Thanks again

David

Cleaning through my inbox of old Rootschat notifications, I came across these old postings.  Since my original posts, I have now discovered the marriage particulars and surname of Stephen Monger's wife, Amelia.  I thought perhaps some of the descendants would like to update their records with the information.

Stephen MONGER married Amelia KNOWLES at St. Peter's Church, Canterbury, Kent on 12 March 1816.  The source citation is as follows:

1. Church of England, Canterbury Cathedral Archives, Parish Registers (U.S.A., Salt Lake City:  Genealogical Society of Utah), St. Peter, Canterbury, Kent, England, FHL film #1786210, item 2, p. 6, No. 18, 12 Mar 1816, Family History Library, 35 North West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, Utah  84150, USA.

"Stephen Monger of Feversham [sic], a bachelor and Amelia Knowles of this parish, a spinster, were married in this Church by Banns this twelfth day of March in the year One thousand eight hundred and sixteen.  By me J. S. Francis, Rector.  This Marriage was solemnized between us Stephen Monger and Amelia Knowles X her mark.  In the presence of George Borain, Sarah Fowler."

So, another new family line to pursue for some of you.

Regards,
Susan

That's terrific, I hadn't got that marriage, so thanks Susan.

I'll look forward to pursuing it further!

I'm in the process of adding information to my 'Crimea Coastguards' database using the Merchant Seamans Records and found more information on Stephen and Charles Stephen Monger. Although the title of these records would suggest that they are only for men in the Merchant service, in fact men in the RN and CG's were also issued tickets, so they can be a good source of additional information.

According to their records, dated in the mid 1840's, Stephen was born 5/1/1788, 5' 5'' tall, light complexion, grey hair and eyes, first went to sea as a boy in 1802; Charles was born 1/1/1820, 5' 5'' tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair and grey eyes.

Thanks very much for the info Martin, much appreciated.

It is truly fascinating to see descriptions of my ancestors. I might add I have nothing in common with them!
