Post by: signalman on Saturday 18 March 06 19:08 GMT (UK)
Hello everyone , im looking for an Edwin Newman who left Tewkesbury Gloucestershire before the last war to either go to Jersey or Guernsey to pick potato,s and he never returned ,we think he may have gotten deported to Germany with his family ,although we dont know if he had any children , i know that he was married , i think he was born around 1904 and to my aged aunt he was just known as Eddy ,i have no more than that to go on ,sorry .  Signalman

During the Occupation of Jersey, the German authorities issued ID cards for all Jersey residents.  These records are now held and indexed at the Jersey Archive.  However, they have no record of Edwin or Eddy Newman.

I don't know what happened to him - but I think there would be evidence if he was a deportee.

I hope this helps.

Mike

I think the Germans required all the Islanders to have ID cards - but of course only the Jersey ones are saved in the Jersey Archives.

You would have to ask in Guernsey about that Bailiwick - possibly, but not necessarily, including Sark.  There were hardly any Islanders who remained (voluntarily or otherwise) in Alderney during the Occupation.
