Title: Please Help Me!!
Post by: CelticSlavicTatar on Saturday 18 March 06 23:02 GMT (UK)
I have R1b, and my patrilineal lineage is Irish... I read from wikipedia, "In 2006, a subgroup of R1b common among people of Irish patrilineal descent was identified as the probable halpotype of many within the of the sept associated with Niall of the Nine Hostages, an Irish king in the Dark Ages." Is this True? My surname is Downer, which is a variant of Dooner. In the Dictionary of American Family Names, it said "Irish (Counties Roscommon and Leitrim): Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Dúnabhra, Ó Donnabhair ‘descendant of Dúnabhra’, from donn ‘brown’ + abhra ‘eyebrow’." I also read that,

He was twice married: - his first Queen was Inne, daughter of Luighdheach, who was the relict of Fiachadh; his second Queen was Roigneach, by whom he had Nos. I., II., III., IV., V., VI., and VII., as given below. This Niall Mór succeeded his Uncle Crimthann; and was the 126th High King of Ireland. Niall had twelve sons: -

I. Eoghan (who gave his name to Tir Eoghain or Tyrone) ancestor of O Neill
II. Laeghaire (or Leary), the 128th Monarch, in the 4th year of whose reign St. Patrick, for the second time, came into Ireland to plant the Christian Faith, A.D. 432
III. Conall Crimthann, ancestor of O'Melaghlin, Kings of Meath
IV. Conall Gulban, ancestor of O'Donnell (princes, lords, and earls of the territory of Tirconnell - Donegal), and of O'Boyle, O'Dogherty, O'Gallagher, etc.
V. Fiacha, from whom the territory from Birr to the Hill of Uisneach in Media Hiberniae (or Meath) is called "Cineal Fiacha," and from him MacGeoghegan, lords of that territory, O'Molloy, O'Donechar, Donaher (or Dooner), etc., derive their pedigree
VI. Main, whose patrimony was all the land from Lochree to Loch Annin, near Mullingar, and from whom are descended Fox (lords of the Muintir Tagan territory), MacAuley, O'Dugan, O'Mulchonry (the princes antiquaries of Ireland), O'Henergy, etc.
VII. Cairbre, ancestor of OFlanagan of Tua Ratha, "Muintir Cathalan" (or Cahill) etc.
VIII. Fergus (a quo "Cineal Fergusa" or Ferguson), ancestor of O'Hagan, etc. IX. Enna
X. Aongus or Æneas
XI. Ualdhearg
XII. Fergus Altleathan.

Also is the R1b a Celtic Haplogroup?, and Does this all add up? If anyone has information on the surname Downer/or Dooner...

Cheers...

Hello CelticSlavicTator,

A belated welcome to RootsChat and also a belated Happy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year. Let us hope that you get some response to your message in 2007.

I think you managed to blind RootsChatters with science in your posting. I had no clue about  R1b  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_R1b_(Y-DNA)) so I did the logical thing and googled to see what your message was about. The Wikipedia certainly indicates it is a Celtic Haplogroup.

Do you wish to contact people with the surname Downer/or Dooner specifically in Roscommon or would people with that name living anywhere be acceptable?

Chris
