Title: Tower Street, Eastbourne - Photograph needed
Post by: mnmilt on Sunday 19 March 06 00:20 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I have a two fold request that I need help with.  In the late 1800s and early 1900s there was a Tower Street (Tower Place) in the Seaside area of Eastbourne.  I think that I know where it was but need some help proving it.  I believe that these roads ran between Seaside Road and what is now Latimer Road.  They seem to have been built over.  In the 1881 census the Ocean Wave Pub was listed as being at 5&6 Tower Place and the Victoria Inn was at 3&4 Tower Place.  I seem to recall that there was a small side street that ran between the two pubs but it is over 25 years since I have been there.

Does anybody have an old map of Eastbourne that could confirm where Tower Street and Tower Place were?

Does anybody live nearby and could take a picture of the small road (if my memory hasn't failed me) between the two pubs?

Regards

Mark

Hello,
I have just come across your post about tower street in Eastbourne. You have probably resolved this by now but thought i would tell you what i know.I lived in Eastbourne untill i was 32,three years ago,i think i know the road you mean. There is a short road that runs between the Oceanwave pub and the Victoria(i was in the Victoria about a month ago),at the end of this is a block of flats that look like they were built in the sixties or seventies, but if you walk down a path that runs around them, the road resumes down to seaside .I dont know if these have seperate names now,or any name at all but they must be the ones you mean.Sorry i cant provide a picture, now live in Essex and only get back there once or twice a year...Hope i have been of some help,
Gerome.

You may well have an answer to this by now but I had a look at the old maps in Eastbourne library and it's where Redoubt Road now is.

Hello,
I.There is a short road that runs between the Oceanwave pub and the Victoria(i was in the Victoria about a month ago),at the end of this is a block of flats that look like they were built in the sixties or seventies, but if you walk down a path that runs around them, the road resumes down to seaside

1876 map on Old Maps confirms this as Tower St but Tower Place is shown as the terrace of houses on the Seafront between Cambridge Rd & Halton Rd

My Great Grand Parents lived in Tower Street in 1881, the road was between the Ocean Wave Pub and Victoria Pub, It was damaged during the War and in 1963 Gwent Court was built over the land that occupied the houses. To my knowledge there are no photographs  of the old buildings in existence. Photography being a luxury until about the 1950s (and this being a side street of lower class buildings i'm afraid you will be out of luck)

Tower Street is now part of St James place. Close by is Christ Church as a landmark. Robert Collier has posted a photo of the end of it on Face Book Historical Hastings Group.
