Title: Help needed! Stewart/Reid/Whyte
Post by: kez_s on Monday 20 March 06 10:26 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am having terrible problems researching one line of my Scottish ancestry and I can't get any connections what so ever!!!

My grandfather was Alexander MacEwan Stewart B: 1932 Lumphanan, D: 1974. His father was James Stewart, Mother: Elsie Whyte (White?), I have no further info on them, I know my grandfather had two brothers Alan and Andrew and a sister Agnes and a half brother James Reid and a half sister Jeanie Reid.

Apart from the fact they are supposed to be descended from the Stewart's of the Black Isle - I have no further information. I have contacted the Registry Office to see if he had a birth certificate - but as of yet no response.

I am not sure about his parents birthplaces and it's unlikely they got married (they were Gypsies). What else can I do??

I am desperate to find this line of my family as it's my maiden name and I am doing a family tree for my son.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi Kes
The Stewarts, Whytes and Reids were indeed a part of the Scottish Traveller families which included my Townsleys. I also have a Matilda Stewart (c1810) and a Betsy Whyte in my tree but probably too early for your family. They did tend to marry into the same families.

Have you tried the scotlandspeople website for your earlier names and census details? It costs £6 for 30 credits but may be worth your while

I haven't tried -  but have been on the site.

I'm presuming they wouldn't be old enough to feature - also as it was 1901 James and Elsie wouldn't have been together so couldn't confirm it was them that way and when I searched their names individually it was like looking for a needle in a haystack!!!! As I don't know where either was born I don't know where to start!!!

My only hope seems to be is if someone else is connected to them!

Mmmmm, sorry Kes I see your problem

The only suggestion is that McEwan was possibly James Stewart's mother's maiden name....and also that you check the Scottish naming patterns if you know which order the children were born.

ie if Alexander were the eldest it's possible James' father's name was Alexander.
The second son would be named after Elsie's father.
And Agnes could be named after Elsie's mother.
Could that name be Elspeth by the way?

Just a thought but there are a couple of lovely books you might want to check out by a Betsy Whyte - not my Betsy unfortunately.

The Yellow on the Broom
and
Red Rowans and Wild Honey

They really give an insight into the Traveller way of life and will go some way to explaining the way the families mixed.

Thanks!

It's the one side of my family tree I would really love to find out about - I just wish they'd been slightly more conventional and registered births, marriages, etc.

I know that the families mixed a lot as my grandmother is a Kelbie and when I look at her family tree it makes me dizzy, unfortunately, she has given me everything she knows. She didn't marry my grandfather so there would be no info there either.

I might see the possibility of using the names like you suggested. But having such common names in Scotland as Stewart, James and Alexander - doesn't make it easy for me to verify that I have the right ones. I don't even know if travellers were included on the Cenus???

I'm not sure if it would be Elspeth, my auntie is also named Elsie so I presume it is that way.

Hi Kes
I think you'll find if you can get back further with your names that they will be on census. I have a couple noted as "in tent" on Common Ground, so the census enumerators did manage to track them down quite well.

Was also doing a quick trawl through my names and up popped
Elspeth Alice White born c1846 Falkirk, Stirling, died c1900.

It's quite possible that this Elspeth has nothing to do with your Elsie, but the families were very intermarried so there must be a connection there somewhere.

She married Alexander Townsley 1874
Children were

Townsley, John White
Birth : 22 APR 1872 Cadder West / Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Townsley, William
Birth : 23 NOV 1873 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Townsley, Christina
Birth : 10 NOV 1874 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Death : ABT. 1883 Dennistoun, Glasgow

Townsley, Hugh
Birth : ABT. 1877 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Townsley, Alexander
Birth : ABT. 1879 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Townsley, Catherine
Birth : ABT. JUL 1880 Yoker, Dunbarton, Scotland

Townsley, Alice Elsie Elspeth

Townsley, Robert
Birth : ABT. 1887 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

You'll find them evetually :)

Hi there

I also am researching the Stewarts/Whyte(White)/Kelbie names, and am currently doing a one-name on the KELBIE family name. My late wife was a Kelbie, so this is sort of a memorial to her. I have a long way to go yet to get all those I know off - probable a year to collect all the certificates, and longer once I start into the Old Parish Records. As I live quite near Edinburgh I have quite a lot of confirmed information on this name already and would be willing to help you out.

I notice from this posting you are looking for a James Stewart m. Elsie White: they had 2 sons - (*).

If you are having difficulty obtaining the certificates I can obtain transcriptions for you as I go over to Edinburgh quite frequently. It would also help me with the other lines on the tree!

Hope to hear from you soon

Bill

Hi Bill
A bit of a long shot but I'm wondering if you've come across a Matilda Stewart born about 1810 ?

She married Robert Townsley, sorry no marriage date for them, but the earliest child I have for them (Robert) was born c1829, Marybole, Ayr.

They were travellers too so could have been born/married anywhere!!  :-[

Hi Sylvia

Cant say I have come across them - Stewarts and Townsleys are prolific names. However I have come across this site on the Townsleys which is quite comprehensive- ://homepages.tesco.net/~townsleyb/TownsFH/html/index.htm

As I am currently doing a one-name on the KELBIEs my interest outside that stem is temporarily on hold - at the outside I would think for at least a year. However, that doesnt mean that they are forgotten and I will be able to do some look-ups for those other branches each time I go across to Edinburgh.

From what I can see my Townsley connections came up to Scotland about the turn of the 18th century - in 1853 I have them in Northumberland and they dont appear on the Scottish censuses until 1901. The English Townsleys - from what I can see - often used the same names in each generation, so it becomes difficult to pin them down. That site might throw out some light for you.

Happy Hunting

Bill

I just read your posts and I too have some Reids and a Whyte and they seem to be travellers themselves.  I have:

gg grandparents - John Cook married Elizabeth Reid (b.1842)(She had a brother James, among many others)
ggg grandparents:  Elizabeth's parents were David Reid (b. 1811 in Montrose) and Mary Bain
gggg grandparents:  David's parents were David Reid (b.?) and Betsy Knowly.
Mary's parents were James Bain and Janet Whyte.
Births, deaths and marriages are all from miscellaneous counties - Angus, Midlothian, fife.

I'll let you know if I come across any of your gang.

Dear Kez_s I came across this site by accident and your information was on the site - first of all
Alexander MacEwan Stewart was my uncle because my father Allan was his older brother.  My father
was born in 1930 near Oyne.  My grandfather James Stewart or bigMaHungry as he was known was
born in Forgue, Huntly.  I do not know where my grannie Elsie was born.  Your grandfather Alexander - my
uncle, also had a sister Helen and a sister Elizabeth who my sister is named after.  I met your granny
Isabella Kelbie who died a couple of years ago and is buried in Huntly, she was a very nice woman and
very small.  But as far as my auntie Agnes is concerned, Bella was never married to Alex but stayed with
him and had family to him.  James my grandfather was the son of Frances Stewart.  I have a family tree
which I can give you a copy of if you would like.  My mothers people were from Perthshire and were also Stewarts and Reids.  I hope you find this helpful.

My only hope seems to be is if someone else is connected to them!

Have you tried Alford Family History near Aberdeen and surrounding areas.
Mary Craig married George Hall and one of their daughters married  a Reid, but off the top of my head, I cannot remember his name, but can  check if required.

My great-grandparents were called James and Elsie Stewart, they were travellers, They had a a daughter called helen another daughter which i dont know her name and also a son called Andrew Stewart and half son James Reid. I am unsure if they had any other children as i dont know any imformation of the stewarts from my family. What I do know is that in 1970 (*) and (*) were living in a kent in Keith but in 1966 they were living in Tombeg Monymusk. I dont know if there is a connection with both of the stewarts we are looking for, I look forward to hearing from you as I am also looking for a needle in a hair stack. Thanks Megan

I have been reading this thread and see that some of the Stewarts mentioned are related to my folk. Big ma hungry was my granny relation and I am sure I can help with some info there. I am also searching for Reid's and Whytes. I have traced most of my mothers side the Stewarts. My father was Andrew Whyte born in Aberdeen 1920 - 1992  his Father was Alexander(Sandy)Whyte married Elizabeth (Betsy)Reid 1885 - 1957 they married at Alyth around 1914, they had several children before then, they travelled around Perthshire Scotland. Betsy's father is the person I am searching for. His name was Robert Reid and was referred to as big Rob Reid, the Whytes were all small folk. I do not have exact dates for him but know he was dead when his daughter got married in 1914. His wife was Margaret Whyte and she died young her mother was a Mckenzie. Cambeltown was mentioned.

Welcome to rootschat. :)
Heve you managed to find Rob Reid in any of the censuses? As his wife died young, was Betsy brought up by her dad or other family members? It would be interesting to find Betsy in the 1891 & 1901 censuses. Do you know where she was born? If Betsy had siblings then you may be able to pinpoint Rob's date of death by viewing any of their marriage certificates (if they married before Betsy did). Hope this helps,
flst.

I have some info on your grandfather MICHAEL KELBIE STEWART. Born 1st April 1924 (later than current Privacy Rules for being online from Scotlandspeople). Died 14th November 1980 in Dr Gray's Hospital, Elgin (lived at 82 Newmills Road, Elgin) - died from Pancreatic Fistule, Gastric Surgery, Bleeding Durodonal Ulcer, and Broncho-pneumonia - I expect you already know this. He was married to MARGARET HELEN HARROLD. His Record No. at Libindx.moray.gov.uk is NM174333 which may give you a little more detail. His death was recorded in the Northern Scot on 22 Nov 1980.

Hi my nanny's side are all reeds and whytes. Alternatively sometimes recorded as reid or whyte.  My nanna insists it's whyte though.

My great nanny was Elizabeth whyte a romany woman who married a burgess. Her grandparents were reeds. All from around the hexham area or Scotland.
