Title: Help needed
Post by: Pollynation on Wednesday 06 October 04 19:21 BST (UK)
I have been trying to find an uncle who went to Australia.
He lived in Lancashire area then moved out, but he came back because he was very ill. Eventually he went back to Australia.

This is my problem.
When he came back he lived in Scunthorpe and i have the address, i have checked the electorial registers and he's not listed. No body else seems to have any records of him whatever. When he first emigrated would he have been made an Australian Citizen? Would he be eligable to vote when he came back?  Has anyone got ideas on how to find anything which will tell me when he lived in Scunthorpe?

A rootschat member has been looking for info on the Aussie side but to no avail.

I will be grateful for any suggestions.

Hi Pollynation,

Do you have any dates at all that could help us?

I don't know the original date he went out.

I moved to Lincolnshire,  Easter 1972. It was after that date when he returned to England and lived at Scunthorpe. The family seem to think that he went back  to Australia in 1979. But this is not fact.

Well that's not so long ago - and by the way, I think you are only a few miles down the road from me!

Did he work in Scunthorpe at all?   If you have his address, are any of his neighbours still living in the area?   Did he own the house?   If so, did he sell it to the present owners?   What about the Town Hall - did he pay rates?   If he was ill was he registered with a local doctor/hospital?

Just a few ideas off the top of my head!   I hope you find him.

He rented a mobile home at parklands, Scotter Road, Scunthorpe. ( used to be Jacksons pre 1976).

He was under medical supervision, but those records will be confidential. I doubt weather Scunthorpe General will release information to me. He didn't work at all.  Been to Parklands, they have no records that old. Searched the library- cannot find anything there. Will try the poll tax/council tax office.

By the way , the uncle's name is Cyril Cooper, just in case anyone recognises these details.

I have just about run out of ideas :'(

Hi Pauline,

Scunthorpe General and the local doc. would certainly not release uncle Cyril's medical records, but I see no reason why, with a bit of pleading and begging they could not have a look and tell you when treatment began and ended - assuming they have the records that is.

Was he a sociable chap do you know?   Would he have been a regular in the local pub, or been a member of any clubs and organisations?   Was he alone or did he have a wife and children with him?

As far as the electoral roll is concerned, I believe you have to be resident for one year before you are included, but I don't think he would be allowed to vote here if he was an Australian citizen.
Also, I am not sure that he would have been able to claim any benefits, but this is something you could perhaps investigate.

Other than that, I think I am as stumped as you, but I will keep scratching my head for you!   Maybe somebody else will have a few bright ideas.

Hi Pauline, ;D

your uncle would not have been 'made' an Australian citizen. Citizenship is applied for by choice and granted providing the person fulfills the criteria to become a citizen.

Some migrants live their entire life in Australia without becoming a citizen.

They are Australian 'residents' and still have full voting rights in their country of birth. Others hold duel nationality and have rights in both countries.

Hope this helps.

Darcy

Thanks for all the help. I will beg with doctors for info as you suggested.

I have checked the voting register for the time he was here- he wasn't listed.
Yes he had a wife with him, but no children they were all adults and still in Australia.  I was only a small child so remember visiting him but thats about it.
They brought me some lovely dolls- which i still have!

Thanks for all the suggestions, i hope i find something from these.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I contacted the council tax office and all  their records have been destroyed. I phoned the hospital but was told straight away that i couldn't have any information at all, not even if he was being seen.

Oh well, we can but try. And some people i've spoken to are very trying. Not to be put off , my last option is to beg the local newspaper to help.

Thanks again to everyone
