I'm trying to find information about my grandfather, James BASSHAM who was born on the 14th February 1926 at 75 Huntington Road, York.
I'm led to believe that this was a workhouse/poor house/hospital of some sort. Are there any records I could look at which will help me to find out more?
I'm fortunate enough to have the Birth Certificate, it lists the mother as Isabella Bassham, Domestic servant, c/o Caravan (n/r)ear Charles Street, Hull.
The "informant" is listed as G? Jenner, Occupier, 75 Huntington Road, York.
Any Ideas?

Hi
There are some references to the Poor House on Huntington Road on "The Workhouse" website at http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/index.html
Hope it helps.
Best wishes

Hello James.
You have suprised me with the address, 75 Huntington road.
It is where my great grandfather died in 1938.
I always thought it was his home.
Now i know better.
I understand that part of the workhouse was a hospital.
I have lived in York nearly all my life and i am still finding things out.
Thank you for posting your question.
Regards
Vanessa

My great grandfather, Wharram England, died at 75 Huntington Road in 1935. I thought it may have been a hospital or similar but it is very close to the old workhouse site so I guess it was part of that. I do live in York too although I looked on Google earth to pinpoint the exact spot!
