My four trees include: KYNE, PHILLIPS, WOODS and ZELLEY.
It is unteresting, but tracing the family history of the great - grandfathers is easier than tracing the great - grandmothers.
-
True - but when one parent is illegitimate and the fathers name is not on the original birth certificate - you cannot get past 3 gt grandfathers - no matter how hard you try. ::)

You may never find him and all your lost distant cousins, but somewhere they are out there. But, without the road map you
remain lost running in circles unable to see a road marker that would lead you to a fresh tree to which you belong.

I'd like to honour my four great-grandfathers:
William Justin Beauchamp Cameron, who came to Australia from Ireland as a fourteen year old boy, without his parents and family, lived an adventurous pioneering life, and made good though with a number of setbacks;
Rev. Edmund Huband-Smith, born in Ireland, ordained in Lichfield England as a Church of England priest, came to Australia and ministered for thirty years in a remote, small settlement called Jerrys Plains in New South Wales;
Thomas Hood Bentley, master mariner, who rose from humble and impoverished beginnings in the East End of London, lived in Hong Kong and Taiwan, sailed his own barque around the world for four years, and finally became a marine surveyor in Sydney, NSW;
Thomas Murray Hall, born in New South Wales, became an accountant and a Member of the Legislative Council in Queensland (the upper house of Queensland which was abolished by a Labor government early in the 20th century).

I have three official and one unofficial.
Jeremiah Walters: Known as George Bernard for some reason served in the Army for almost 15 years.
John Pearson: A miners union official back in the 1920s
Thomas Jewell: A miner and bare fist fighter (for a bit of extra cash)
Thomas Arthur Slater: Married my great grandmother when my grand father was 5 and was always known as Dad to him, he hated unions.

I can only name 3 great-grandfathers :(
Joseph Gandley from Birmingham, England
Thomas R. Shorter from Chertsey, England
John W. Bowman - Fenelon Falls, Ontario
Whyte?
I can't find my grandfather's birth so I'm stuck. I wish I could have 5 mins alone with him!
I'm with Gadget though on the maternal lines, I would hope someone 100 years from now thought I was important and wanted to know about my family instead of just hubbys.
Elizabeth Ball born Birmingham England
Susan Dawkins born Co. Cork, Ireland
Mary Heffernan born Guelph, Ontario

I have four :
Martin Meehan, a builder, from Co Mayo, Ireland
Frederick Stanley Hopps an ironworker, from Darlington, Co Durham
William Slaser Pyle, a joiner, from Shildon, Co Durham
John Robert Angus, a railwayman, from Shildon, Co Durham.
The Darlington and Shildon lines have been easy to follow, Martin Meehan remains a bit of a mystery!

Ethel Harling, a Prestonian

My 4
Robert Carver a wheelwright from Wrestlingworth, Bedfordshire
Frederick Farr a straw hat worker from Luton Bedfordshire
Albert Love Griffin a GWR passenger guard from Colyford, Devon
and James Allsop a jack of all trades from Wirksworth Derbyshire

My 8 are-
John William Russell, a gardener from White Waltham in Berks and Beatrice Jones from Great Marlow in Bucks.
John Stubbs, a coachman from Mucklestone in Shrops and Jane Shepherd from Powick in Worcs.
Edward Gibson, a circus ringmaster cum carpet weaver (!) from Liversedge in West Yorkshire and Sarah Ann France from Huddersfield.
John Patchett, a rullyman from Bassingham in Lincolnshire and Charlotte Bishop from Keyingham in E Yorks.
I was surprised when I got to this point just how far flung my great grandparents were. I expected them to be confined to East Yorks where my mum came from and Bucks where my dad originated. Just shows how little I knew!
I agree with you, Gadget - I love following the maternal lines and get really frustrated when the parish record entries only give the mother's first name or, even worse, give only the father's name. Did the clerks think the men did the giving birth or what?! >:(
I've just found a couple of wills where the man leaves his soon to be widow this that and the other but only as long as she doesn't remarry. If she does, well s-d her!! >:(
We've come a long way since then - thank god! ;D

I have an interesting set of gt grandads ;)
Two of them are brothers ;D My paternal grandparents were first cousins.
George Albert Rogers b1868 who was a timekeeper on the London buses.
Herbert Phillips Rogers b 1870 a London omnibus driver and horsekeeper.
William Worth b1867 a general labourer of Macclesfield Cheshire.
Joseph Bailey b1868 foreman in a silk factory in Macclesfield.
I must agree tracing the 'boys' is easier ,but the girls are more of a challenge and therefore more interesting.

Hi All,
I am lucky enough to know about all of my Gt Grandparents!! My Gt Grandfathers were:
George Albert Parker b. 1887, Linton Heath, Derbyshire. d. 1952, Birmingham. He started out a miner then became a tram guard in Blackpool and Birmingham. Also worked in the staff canteen at the Cadbury's factory in Birmingham after he retired.
Thomas Gibson b. 1878, Ardwick, Manchester, Lancashire. d. 1963, Birmingham. He was an Engineer and an inventor of sorts although he never patented anything!
Arthur George Cyril Bauer/Bower b. 1895, Kentish Town, London. d. 1968, Isleworth, Middlesex. He was in the Royal Field Artilllery during the First World War and afterwards worked for the Board of Trade as a civil servant. He was evacuated during World War 2 to Buxton in Derbyshire. He was the only member of the family to anglicise his surname!
Robert Sydney Phillips b. 1884, Croydon, Surrey. I don't as yet know when he died!! He was a soldier during World War 1 and was a bricklayer in civillian life.
They all led interesting lives, through hardship and otherwise!
Regards,
David

Of my paternal four great great grandfathers, three
have the name Richard:
Richard Baker, Richard Lewis and Richard Zelley
-
I only have two of my four:
Mum's maternal grandad - Alfred COBB b.1883
Mum's paternal grandad - unknown - her father was adopted. Irritating.
Dad's maternal grandad - someone HILL, but I have no info on that!
Dad's paternal grandad - George William COLDRON b.1882
Alfred COBB was in the Territorial Army.
George COLDRON was an iron worker and prize fighter!
We have some town gossip that may lead me to my mum's dad's dad, we do know his mum's name at least! (Yey for the g.grandmas!)
The HILLs are proving to be a nightmare though! Going to have to get me some birth certificates ordered there...

It appears the great or great great grandfathers have not received as much attention as the great grandmother thread.
Hopefully, we can give them this second opportunity.

My four great grandfathers are:
Frank Baker (1857-1929), father of the Frank Baker who was father of my father Frank Baker! Therefore known as Frank Baker #1. A carpenter - born in Nottingham, but settled in Croydon. My mum still has two dressers he made. Some confusion as to which family in Nottingham he belonged to as there was another Frank Baker who was a carpenter born 1857/8! At least 6 children.
Albert Quinton (1862-1898). Born and died in Croydon. Worked on the railways; died of enteric fever and peritonitis, leaving his wife with 6 surviving children (two had already died). His father and two of his brothers were gunmakers/whitesmiths and it is not clear why Albert didn't follow a similar trade too. A bit of a mystery man - no known photo.
Henry Carter (1832-1895). A master baker, born in Purleigh Essex and ended up running a bakery on the Mitcham road in Croydon from the late 1860s until his death - in suspicious circumstances in a ditch. Fathered twelve children, one of whom died as a child in a scalding accident in the bakery - but the other 11 all lived full lives.
William Luetchford (1852-1903). Born in Carshalton Surrey but moved down the road to Croydon by 1861. A carman for Batchelors Removals and Depository. Died of Bronchitis - probably an occupational hazard from sitting on top of a van in all weathers. 7 children

My four great grandfathers:
John MCKAY (Scotland 1856 - Australia 1947)
Samuel BONSALL (England 1862 - Australia 1908)
Charles John Belford HAYNES (Australia 1876-1961)
and then there's Nana's father - could he be Mr Thomas Leighton-Holme, Gentleman and son of a British diplomat and a Spanish princess??!! Or could he be Mr Thomas Davis, itinerant journalist and dropout solicitor's clerk??!! Supposedly he was the former, who changed his name to the latter, but he sounds like a shyster to me ::) Anyway, sadly there's no piccy of Thomas, but I have the other three :)

Hello
My 4 G-Grandfathers are:
WTJ Sellick b.1881 in Doynton, Gloucs d.1961 - Farm Baliff
TF Considine b.1885 in Co. Clare, Ireland d.1958 - occ. unknown
Petras Pecionaitis b.1895 in Marijampole, Lithuania d.before WWII - Shoemaker
STE Tuck b.1897 in Kentish Town, London d.1969 - Engineer/Clark
All died before my birth and very soon after my parent's births, the only one I have a picture of is my mother's paternal grandfather William Sellick. He was a very keen gardener and won prizes for his roses and vegetables, the gardening & agricultural genes have definitly passed down through the generations, he had thick eyebrows which I have unfortunatly inherited (not good for girls :() but he also ate cake for breakfast which I similarly do so that inherited trait is good ;D
I Would be interested to find out what characteristics my other g-grandfathers had and see of they have been repeated down the generations.

And my 4 ...
Thomas Bogle 1878 - 1944. Took a funny turn outside the local pub and was carried inside by a few friends and given a stiff drink ...... bad idea ! dropped stone dead at the bar still clutching his glass, much to the shame of his strictly teetotal wife lol (funnily enough I know the woman who owns that pub now and she swears blind that she's seen the ghost of an old man standing at the spot he died ..... maybe I should go down and see if he'll talk to me lmao)
William Sloan 1868 - 1933. Don't know too much about him other than he was a postman and I believe in the Black Watch at one point.
James Ward - 1885 - 1946. Again don't know much about him at all, sneaking suspicion he and my gt grandmother were never married and that he was gassed in WW1 causing health problems for the rest of his life.
Thomas Stark McMorran 1882 - 1945. Master Joiner and prize winning canary breeder. Was out fishing with my Grandmother one day when they noticed a "Gentleman" had dropped his expensive tackle box so they walked along the river to return it to him, the "Gentleman" took his name and address and they went on their way ..........then received a summons and fine of 10 shilling for trespassing !!

I have these wonderful gentlemen in my tree
1791 Saddleworth Yorks; Joseph Buckley. He was a Carter in the area of Springhead and Oldham.
1822 Saddleworth Yorks; Joshua Buckley. He was a Carpenter and sadly died in 1860 of Pericarditis(6mths) He did not live to see his son.
1860 Saddleworth Yorks; Joshua Buckley. The surname Buckley was very common in the Saddleworth area and so to distinguish each person it became the custom to replace the surname with a word that was felt best discribed them. My Great Grandfather was known as Josh-o-Toil, As he was a very hard worker in the local foundry and rarely missed a days work.I can remember my father telling me this with real pride. Joshua died in 1947
1895 Saddleworth Yorks; Thomas Buckley. Thomas served in france during WW1. He then went on to become a shop Keeper in Brideoake street Oldham

I was on National Archive searching for my GGGrandfather Woodroofe Excise Officer and on the ensuing lists were many "Orders of Filliation and Maintenance of bastard children" . We never knew if he did the see the end of the film, gt grandad and gt grandma went twice a week to the cinema, she had give him a nudge at the end thinking he was asleep, but sadly not, she had to argue her corner so he could be brought home and not taken to the morgue I have the newspaper cutting somewhere, it states what was on at the cinema,
Will check on Clifford,

William John Simpson ZELLEY (1855 - 1900)
As we look at the history of our great grandfathers and great grandmothers
there are some interesting stories to tell.
William J S Zelley was born in Weymouth, Dorset in 1855.
In 1875, he married Elizabeth Ann Baker at the Holy Trinity Church in Weymouth. Witnesses were William George Baker and Maria Susan Zelley.
Of interest, both their fathers Richard Baker and Richard Zelley were members of the British Coastguard.
The first three children were born in Weymouth -
Annie Susan, Elizabeth Kate and Louisa Rose Zelley. About 1882 or 1883, they moved to Canada and settled in Ontario. Four children were born bfore
the family moved to Nanaimo where Henry William and Elsie Hope Zelley
were born.
In 1897, during a storm, a great oak tree hit the roof of the family dwelling
killing young Herbert John Zelley and injured others. Tragedy struck again in
1900 when William Zelley, Richard Kenyon, and John Cordell drowned when
Zelley's sailing vessel capsized.
In August 1990, I wrote an article titled:
"Marine tragedy sad tale from past" which was published in the "Nanaimo Times". One slice of the story was as follows:
"When the men failed to return, a search party comprised of Messers
Bennett, Baxter, Clark and Cordell set out in The New Vancouver Coal Company
launch and searched until darkness. On Tuesday morning various groups
including Harry Bennett and Arthur Dixon, set out in row boats and other vessels,
to search sea and shore." - Brian Zelley, 1990.

True - but when one parent is illegitimate and the fathers name is not on the original birth certificate - you cannot get past 3 gt grandfathers - no matter how hard you try. ::)
Burrow Digger
My great grandad was illegitimate. And so was all his siblings. But through extensive research, i eventually found evidence in a newspaper article that proved who their father was.
So you never know, and you should never give up.

thaks to ITS i now know both my missing great grandmother and great grandfathers names
:) :)
-
My four great grandfathers were:
Seth Hobson - Born 1847 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. He was a Butcher and moved with his family to Manchester, where he died in 1892 aged 45 of pneumonia after having falling off his horse and cart whilst drunk!
John Isaac Cockett - Born 1843 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. He was a Master Baker and moved with his family to Manchester, where he died in 1910 aged 67 from Bronchities and Heart Failure.
Thomas Boulton Benson - Born in Ulverston, Lancashire in 1857. His occupations varied between labourer, merchant seaman and marine engineer. He moved with his family to Hull where he died in 1893 aged 36 from Heart Disease.
George William Wright - Born about 1856/1858 in Bethnal Green. He was a fisherman and by 1884 he was living in Hull. By 1901 he owned a Tobacconist and Confectionery shop. He died in 1935 apparently aged 77 from Heart Disease and Coronary Thrombosis.
George William Wright is the g.grandfather that I have no further information about (and the one on my avatar - at least today). It is only due to the 1911 census that I found out he was born in Bethnal Green. Prior to that the only information I had was that he was born in Middlesex. As I cannot find a marriage for him and g.gran (although the 1911 census states they had been married 28 years by then!) I cannot find out the name of his father to help identify him from all the other George Wrights born in Middlesex around 1856/8.

James STRAWBRIDGE - 1860 - 1903
Thomas VINCENT - 1846 - 1917

I,ve got 3 accounted for and one suspect.
Fred Sykes, b.1843 Huddersfield,. Letterpress printer
Henry Rodwell, b. 1842, d. 1844, Watford. Auctioneer
George Craig, b. 1825, d. 1898, Hamilton. Furnace man.
And here,s our suspect..My grandfather was illigimate, James Lynch Ferrigan. b. Edinburgh. We have found a James Lynch, living nearby, who could be the guilty party. However he died tragically, by falling down a flight of steps while under the influence. And as both his son and brother died without issue we,re afraid the line has petered out. However, I have talked my brother into sending in his DNA to A*****y, so maybe we will get an answer some day. Stranger things have happened. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

As a newcomer to RootsChat (what a great site, and so many helpful people) I thought I need a bit of practice, so here are my four GG'S:
Frederick Thomas Brown. b: Winchester 1848 d: Winchester 1938, Draper. He worked for then owned the family Drapery business in Winchester High Street
Frederick Charles Hansford. b: Beaminster, Dorset 1864 d: Winchester 1950, Post Master, ran a Post Office in Burgess Road southampton for over forty years.
Albert Gard. b: Bristol 1871 d: Winchester 1942 Taylor. He supplied the school uniforms to Winchester College for many years.
Charles Bennett Lloyd. b:Birmingham 1859 d Stoke Charity, nr Winchester 1924. Vicar. He was based in several parishes in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, he had the foresight to document his family history.
In summary, I think all four were quite respected gentlemen setting the standards for later generations, it was however discovered a few years ago that one of them (not saying which one) did father a child before marriage ! :o

Good additions, and fathering a child before marriage is likely par for the course
in many family trees.

My lot are:
William Thomas Barton bn. 1861 in Rotherfield, East Sussex, father was an ag lab. As a young man, worked as an ostler in the local Railway Hotel, then moved to London as a domestic coachman. Married Jane Maria Sylvester in 1884 and had six children born in six different towns in southern England and Wales. Jane was a non-conformist, and her grandfather's home in Farlington, Hampshire was licenced as a non-conformist meeting house. William's line is the only one to have yielded a single "gentleman" and even he was probably exaggerating!
Charles Hinton bn. 1864 in Bentworth, Hampshire, father was a footman to a Rector who had moved to Hampshire from Worcestershire. As a young man, worked as a gardener to the Rector before moving to London as a domestic coachman. Married Mary Jane Chalker in 1894 and had ten children in fourteen years (only six survived infancy) before dying of fatty heart at the age of 44. His premature death split the family up with four of the children going into homes and two into service. Am (impatiently) awaiting detailed information from the Children's Society about the family situation after his death.
Richard Joshua Jones bn. 1860 in Poplar, Middlesex, father (and grandfather and great grandfather) was a shipwright. Shipbuilding in Deptford was dying so Richard became a painter and decorator, married 17 year old Charlotte Ann Rumble only just in time in 1884 and went on to have a further 13 children - all eight sons worked on the Docks. Had two thumbs on his right hand (as did two of his sons) and his grandmother pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the Old Bailey in 1836.
John Hindle bn. 1855 in Darlington, Durham, father a shoemaker. Worked as a brakesman in an iron foundary before moving to Erith, Kent to another iron foundary in about 1884. Married Eliza Mary Smith in 1880, the gothic silver locket she was given as a wedding present is my proudest possession. Had four children, three 'ooop north' and one in Kent.

Just found this thread and it's fascinating, but I don't understand this
I can only locate three because my grandfather didn't exist until his marriage in 1907 therefore no gt.grandad!
Did he just beam in from outer space or was he given a completely new identity for some reason??
Linda

My great grandfathers are:
1/ Uknown father of Charles George Cookson - please report to me if you read this
2/ Charles Jackson born 1860 Northampton

LOL. I know the feeling well.
I gave my great grandparents Frank and Annie Baker a very good talking to for not getting married, when I visited their grave earlier this year. While I know something of Annie's forebears (well her mother at least), Frank has left me with a very big headache - he was one of two of that name born in 1857 in the Nottingham area who became carpenters, but which one? ::)

Linda,
You must be one of those lucky few people who don't have ancestors who seemed not to be born, or not to die!! :D
Many of us have people who seemed to appear on this earth as an adult. Me, I have one who was apparently beamed up - he just disappeared, and I can't find a death or any trace of him! :( :'(

My Four Great Grandfathers;
Thomas George Knighton
1920-2009
Born in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England. Was married twice, my grandfather is from his first marriage. Was famous for carrying an 18-stone sack of wheat for a full mile. Owned his own lorry driving company. Moved to Australia in 1966 with his second family. There is a whole different branch of Knightons living in Australia.
Robert Rodgers
1914-1998
Born in Consett, Durham, England. Biked all the way down to Wisbech in Cambridgeshire with his brother in search for work, and met my great grandmother, Maizee Glenuster Feaviour and stayed there for the rest of his life. Was the only great grandfather I ever met, he made me laugh by sticking his false teeth out.
Robert Joseph Tweedie
1912-1988
Born and lived in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Married my great grandmother Margaret McCluskey in 1934. Reportedly a very intimidating man, my grandfather and him did not get on. Apparently was responsible for the trend of deep-frying everything in Scotland, apparently while working as a fry cook he would deep-fry anything on request. Highly doubt this story however.
James McMillan
1898-1957
Born and lived in Glasgow. By far the oldest of my great grandfathers, my grandmother was the youngest of her siblings with a big age gap between them. Quite a tragic figure as both his parents died when he was a young boy. He also died relatively young at the age of 59. Married my great grandmother Matilda Gunn in 1922.
-

I only know of 3 great grandfathers, on account of illegitimacy, so can I list great grandmothers?
Elizabeth Lang, born about 1841, possibly Scottish, but I can find no definite details. She and great grandfather went to New Zealand in 1864, and she died in Christchurch in 1925.
Emma Ruth Staples, born in London in 1852, but the family were from Wiltshire, and went to New Zealand a few years later. Her father was a tailor. She died there in1901
Elizabeth Coultham, born 5th Aug 1844, in Petham Kent. Died in Nonington 16 Mar 1909.
Eliza Felton, born 1855 in Belchamp Walter, Essex. Died 1932 in Great Warley, Essex.

My four great grandfathers:
James Bintcliffe born 24 Jan 1847 Barkisland, Halifax, died 13 Jan 1910 Broad Carr Elland. Started out as a cotton spinner, became a grocer, then a farmer and carrier.

John Tempest born 29 April 1855 Ovenden Halifax, died 1923 in Bradford. He was a greengrocer, then became a stone quarryman.
Alfred Simpson born 19 Feb 1847 Skircoat Halifax, died 1897 in Halifax. He was a butcher.
My husband's four are a bit more interesting:

Edwin Millinchip born 1841 Dudley Worcestershire died 28 Nov 1896 Newport Wales. He was an iron worker.
William Walker born 1794(!) Swindon Wiltshire died 1870 Reading Berkshire. He was a sadler and harness maker.

And I should have said that the one who was in Echunga was about to sign up for the Boer War.
-
Only know the three due to illegitimacy:
Leonard Charles Gower B. 1904 Bungay, Suffolk, D. 1975 Suffolk
William Henry Carter B. 1915 Tuddenham St. Mary, Suffolk, D. 1989 Tuddenham, Suffolk
Edward Charles Grimwood B. 1917 Lowestoft, Suffolk, D. 1983 Norfolk
Only William was alive when i was born and by coincidence we had the same birthday!
Leonard worked as a Painter and Decorator, William was a Forester and Farm labourer.
Edward was also an agricultural worker and was a Rear gunner in the Second World War. He won the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1945.
-
Only know the three due to illegitimacy.
Don't give up on that one. Only very recently, a fellow researcher (cousin?) found a document in the archives I had not seen which named my grandmother's father. Until then, I was the same, just a blank, and I had almost given up hope.
-
Thanks Pinefamily, that's an interesting story. There is a chance i may find out a bit more from my Grandmother, this man in question would be her father-in-law. I once heard that he may have been a butler and had immigrated to Australia after my Grandfather was born. That's all i know at the moment.
Kind regards, Tom
-
Well the story got a lot more interesting when, with the help of fellow rootschatters, I found a newspaper article on Trove, the Australian archives online, and found he was shot during the Boer War and so badly wounded he was actually officially listed as dead. After surviving, he went from England where he had recuperated to Canada. All this after fathering my grandmother. I suspect he didn't even know that he had gotten my great grandmother pregnant (they were both 17 at the time).
-
Isn`t amazing with all the things that we can dig up now, no secrets anymore.
-
My 4 great grandfathers, all moved away from their birthplace....
Edward Lord - born in Essex in 1859, also lived in Gloucestershire and died in 1942 in Cardiff (patent fuel worker);
James Barry - born in Cork around 1856, died in 1926 in Cardiff (dock labourer);
Henry Griffiths - born in Pembrokeshire in 1856, died in 1931 in Cardiff (master tailor); and
Thomas Cope - born in Staffordshire in 1858, lived in Yorkshire and died in 1927 in Cardiff (baker, then school caretaker).
Deirdre
-
James Alphonse Raggio was my grandfather. He was not a sailor. He was a grocer in Galveston, Texas and later in LaMarque, Texas. He was called J.A, never Jack. He had three daughters, three grandsons and three granddaughters. He passed away in 1960.
-
I'm fortunate, I've got a full set:
Thomas Boraston 1860-1933 Ag Lab married twice. Total 10 children (7+3) (I'm descended from the 1st family)
Richard Tyler 1867-1918
James Wilson 1873-1948
John Thomas Berry 1861-1937
and in the spirit of equality, my Great grandmothers (in same order as above)
Ellen Noakes 1862-1897 died 14 days after giving birth to her 7th child.
Mary Ann Wyatt 1868-1952
Jane Ellen Berry 1876-1938
Elizabeth Ellen Bithell 1860-1913 (10 children)
No the two BERRY'S are not related. (at least not in 19th C.)
-
Although I know the name of all 4 of my g.grandfathers, I'm still searching for the origins of one of my g.grandfathers. At least with DNA, I now have a link back to the 1841 census so I've got to research how he fits into this family in London (the modern descendants of which live in USA) and as I have always suspected are Jewish.
Sadly my dad's eldest sister, granddaughter of this particular g.grandfather destroyed all photos/paperwork etc. when her mother (his daughter) died, telling one of her sisters "We don't want anything to do with all that lot!" I guess just after WW2, it perhaps wasn't prudent to be thought to be part (however small) of a Jewish family. Oh well, I will find out who he was eventually and then I'll be able to post it on Rootschat for all the helpful people who've tried to find him for me previously.
-
Mine: John William Bradbury, A steelworker in Warrington.
John Greenfield, a shipwright in Liverpool. He outlived 2 previous wives to marry my great grandmother, who must have thought she was on the shelf, being a spinster in her late 30s. Unfortunately John, who was a lot older, dropped dead unexpectedly just 2 weeks after the birth of their only child.
Arthur Robert Dyer, a shoe clicker from Leicestershire - and very dapper he was too, in the photos I have of him.
And number 4. My grannie was apparently the daughter of Thomas William Kilner, a French polisher from Leicester. Her parents split up when she was little, and she was brought up as someone else’s daughter. However this is the only line for which I’ve not had DNA matches (yet!)
-
I had almost forgotten about this thread.
I have now identified my missing maternal great grandfather.
Stephen Claude McGuire, b.1879 in Echunga, South Australia. Known as Claude, he went away to the Boer War and was actually reported dead! Seriously wounded (bullets had gone right through him), he was sent to England for medical support. He was apparently told the climate of Canada would suit his convalescence. So he ended up in Saskatchewan, dying in 1948.
I often wonder if he even knew he had become a father.
-
On my wife's tree
Richard Lambert , born 1849 in Buckland Newton, Dorset as Richard Davies
Shortly after his birth, mopther Eliza Davies married John Lambert, but is he the father?
He was a carpenter, moved to the London area and died in June qtr 1885
William Henry Cole b 1856 in Holt, Worcestershire
He was a wheelwright, eventually setle in Twickenham, middlesex. Daughter and son in law emigrated to Canada, but she came back and stayed with him. Son in law came back to fight in WW1, was gassed and died in 1919 in his house. Later moved to Weybread in Suffolk where he died in 1931

Hi
You can imagine the fun I had even getting to the 4 g/f's. 1 unknown, 1 we're only making a guess at but are only 75% sure and the 2 remaining g/f's are both called Tom Jones, both welsh miners. Needle in a haystack springs to mind.

How about our great grandmothers? They're equally important.
Charlotte Elizabeth Chapman [1849-1917] - a Wisconsin farm girl who taught school until she was married then helped out in the general store; described by her daughter-in-law as "one of the most unselfish people I ever knew."
Mary Minerva Ware [1838-1894] - born in Maine and migrated to Wisconsin as a teenager; she trained as a tailor in order to get out from under her father's thumb; described as an accomplished mimic but high-strung and a bit of a drama queen.
Clara Ellen Barnard [1855-1927] - lived and died in Bristol; she was the daughter of a gardener; trained as a dressmaker; she married a grocer's assistant who did well and became quite prosperous; I know very little about her, just one photo.
May Augusta Marshall [1885-1945] - a mystery woman, illegitimately born in Bristol, apparently to an upper crust family, and adopted by humbler people; described as "very aristocratic in looks and manner but with a touch of the bohemian rogue about her."

Erato, I seem to recall just such a thread for our great grandmothers. I remember posting on it.
