Hi Ian

A brilliant piece of work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;D as the gravestones in St Sepulchre's have been piled up
(and therefore lost to us family historians) there is no way of knowing whose
names are on them.

As I said on the P.M. I will see if I have a photograph of Francis for you later in week.

Congratulations on your work which is now priceless.

Sandy  :)

Hi Ian

I spent 5 hours today looking for my St Sepulchre graves. I knew I had them on a cdrw
but the file wouldn't open on my comuter as I had a different operating system on
when I took them.

Anyway it means that luckily my hubby is still on Win 98 and it reads on his machine so
he will put it on a spare hard drive for me (only have 512 MB memory stick) and then I
will hopefully burn the cd rom on to a cdr and solve the problems for the future.  ;D

I thought I had lost them all then glad I thought to check on his machine but should
have had the brain-wave earlier. LOL.

If he is there you will have a.s.a.p.

Cheers Sandy

Marilyn.
Errm no i had not thought of it, but i could !
It would mean a re design of my family history website to accomodate it

Sandy
You are lucky there i have most things on the CD now as i have learnt my lesson the hard way ! and lost all the family history i built up. and had to start again, so if it happens again i just have to put in the disk and its all there !
Still can never find anything when i want to ! Oh and the most important the BOX ! the family history box which over flows. LOL

Hi Ian,

I see there are Halls on your list, I have ancestors from the Kettering area, but do not know if this church is around there.

Hello Patrish
St Sepulchre Church is the Heart of Northampton Town, a very old 12th century church, and 1 of the 4 round churchs in the UK
The Hall that is mentioned i will put on here just in case, as you never know, as Kettering is only 16 miles away.

HALL

IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRACE OF A BELOVED MOTHER RACHEL HALL WHO DIED OCTOBER _____ 1879 AGED 66 YEARS

At the bottom of the grave it says allbright.
the gap is  unreadable

Hi Ian (and Patrish  :))

I know what you mean but I had to look through over 150 home-made cd roms of
events hope we don't ever have a house fire. LOL.

It meant that I could label up the cd roms I hadn't got around to so not all doom and
gloom.

I had time to make some Easter Gifts so it turned out to be a good day to unwind.

As I previously said I had the cd rom all the while and when hubby came home he said
he wouldn't have thought to try it on his as the message said the file was damaged.

Damaged my foot. !!!!!!!!!!! Good job I didn't believe the machine.

Problem solved now though !!!!!!!!!!!!

Time for bed. Will be in touch.

Hi Ian

Well I looked for your man and guess what I found him but I didn't take it clearly as it was when I was
"very green" and still learning and it is not sharp. !!!!!!!!!

There was another Greenough that maybe related?

Will attach here.

I will take again and send when I can.

Also posting a picture showing the pile of gravestones that we will never get to know who they are.

This Thomas Greenough could be the son of Francis and Catherine Greenough

The grave you see in the picture has already weatherd badly !
but this is what i managed to get from it, which was not a lot !

IN MEMORY OF THO. GREENOUGH HUSBAND OF ANN GREENOUGH WHO DIED FEB __ 4, 18__  ____ _____ ___ 5 YEARS OF ____

As you see the dates have nearly gone, and in a way hard to guess what the words and numbers could be.
If this is the son of Francis then his grave, is just a little further up.

Hi Ian

This is the previous picture I took and I do not think it is there now.

When I visited today there was nearly no graves at all on the left hand side coming in through from Sheep Street.

Sorry it is not good hopefully I may be mistaken and can re-take a good one for you soon.

Going to bed now. Will take of Thos Greenough's now.

Nite.

This is what i think make this so great !
With the little work i have done and your pictures and then Alans work from the register would should be able to build up a bigger picture and maybe just maybe be able to fill in some of the blank dates !
As you see Thomas Greenoughs grave is in a bad condition, so i will alter my transcript to include that of Alans date from the Parish Register.
I was sure that Francis Greeenoughs grave was standing but i do remember that many where laying down.
I think i did this at the right time by the sounds of it !
So if any of you lot out there live near a grave yard transcribe it, it may of been done before, but you may find your work will either show new ones added or the deteration of our graves, as once gone, that history is lost forever!

Also the date of Thomas Greenough burial Feb 21 1811 well this then could be Francis Greenoughs father ! as Francis was born abt 1796
Not his brother or son as i first thought.

Sandy, thank you so much for the photos.

I remember (in the olden days) that sheep grazed in St Sepulchres churchyard. Looks like they need them back, it is rather overgrown.

Though the worst churchyard I have been in recently was Long Buckby. Definitely not the place to be wearing sandals. Hip waders would have been more appropriate.

Hi Marilyn

I thought Alan told me you lived in Canada.  ;D  ;D  ;D

I couldn't see the Boyes headstone.

Hubby and I went to do the Long Buckby Church 3 times !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and took
about 400 graves and gave up (well for now).

I know exactly what you mean though it is the 1st time (except for today) that I
have given up half way.

How many did you get around too ?.

Cheers Sandy

I was fed up and tired and freezing as a cold wind was blowing across the grave yard.  ;D so I did the best I could.

The grave looked in the same state as the previous photograph so I cleared it.

By the way Ian the grave you said was Smith is Smith not Smart !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go with your own instinct. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have spent 3 hours looking through your list and my original photographs as I only
took 40 today but kept the ones I took in 2003.

Just as well as they are quite a few no longer viewable.

The Churchyard has a large area that is now for people's ashes so a lot of graves
are lost.

Is your index all the graves and did you do only the ones that you could read?

On William Snow's inscription it reads the same as No 6's. from Oh No In Cruelty.

Any way need an early night. Nite

I do live in Canada, but I was born in Northampton, in Far cotton, and moved to St James when I was 5. Hubby and I came to Canada when I was 22.
We are in England for a holiday every 3 years or so. And spend a week or two in Northampton so I can haunt the record office.

Hi Sandy
I cant thank you enough ! The other person who had a look at what i had done said it was SMART but i thought to myself no way surley i could not of mis read that ! and now you have proved me right, i will alter mine back to Smith !
When i did the Inscriptions i did every single grave that was standing or lieing down, every word that could be seen even just the odd letter, the only ones that i did not do where the smashed graves on the far side and inside the church ! it would be worth going into the church just to see what is there !

So it seems then my work has become a valued peice of work, with so many of the graves now gone  :( :'(
Keep matching the pictures to the transcript, you will find you have a real treasure, !
Perhaps i should start on the ones down here in the Water Drought Dover area. before they are lost,
Ian

Well it happened again I thought I would have an early night and the Police Helicopter decided to fly
backwards and forwards for over an hour.  >:( >:( >:(

Never mind Ian at least it meant that I could look at the missing bits and try and
fill some of them in from Alan's index.

Ian some are confirming your own, obviously all need checking and some are possibles. PLease do not forget they are Burial dates unless it says Died .

It really is time for bed.  :)

Wonderful Sandy, just wonderful !
I see this all happend at around 1.30 in the morning !
Right i will check this all out when i get back from the vets
Mind you i could not sleep last night thinking about the graveyards, and how they have all gone!
Then i thought about the crem ! most there will go as you only pay for a certain amount of time then after that your plaque is removed, so yet again history dissapears. unless you keep up the payments...

Ian
Right off the the vets as it is  10 miles away

Hi Ian

I have sent them to you so that you have a copy and will remove from message now.

Also Francis's gravestone.

It is a good thing that the F.H.S are transcribing all the C of E Monumental Inscriptions for Northamptonshire.

I do my little bit by doing some Non-comformists graves as the burial records are not so available.

Hope all goes well at the vets.

Sandy

Thanks Sandy, got the e mail, and opened it ok.
Little Tosca is doing well, after his broken leg, and now can go swimming ! This dog has more fun then me now!

Not thought about Non Conformist Graves, being one myself LOL ! i should know this, but i didnt think there were any at the chapels? as i went to Mount Pleasant in Kettering Road. I have never seen a grave at all, just the odd mention of a person on a wall if they had done something for the church.

Sandy, I forgot to tell you what I was doing in Long Buckby churchyard on a sunday afternoon (besides avoiding the stinging nettles).
Alas, it was not an attempt to record all the inscriptions, just a search for any ancestor graves.

Marilyn
Title: Re: Transcript of St Sepulchres Church Graveyard, Northampton
Post by: seahall on Monday 03 April 06 20:39 BST (UK)
Hi Marilyn

Found your Boyes grave today will post in a moment.

What names are you researching in Long Buckby. Please do not say Muddimans!!! LOL.

Found alot of stinging nettles in St Sepulchre's besides 3 homeless people who use
the church arches and doorways to sleep in. How sad for a beautiful Church to be
used in this way.  :(

Got back ache trying to clear the graves so we could match Ian inscription's.
Went round the grave yard for 4 hours and still have a third to do.  :(
Although the good side is they will have been listed and photographs taken so
they will have their place in history soon.

Some eldery ladies said how lovely it was to be able to see the stones now. Bless.

Cheers Sandy

Hi Ian

Glad to hear that Tosca is recovering.

Our cat Lizzie is 21 on April 11th (and she was the smallest of the litter).

Not many towns ( correct me any one if I am wrong please) have graves although if in
cemeteries you can notice by the wording ones that could be non-conformists graves.

A lot of small villages still have there grave yards attached to their churches
and it is this I have been listing sometimes.

Guess you are going to be busy for a while LOL.

Cheers Sandy

Hi Sandy
I think i will have to do a revised version of the transcript now !
as i have managed either to  put in dates or months and in some cases names ! i did note that Mayo should read Mayor

Now started on the Greenough lot (Your Fault) not an easy family to track !
But you got me going now with Thomas Greenough as he could be my 4X gt grandfather, i need to find the baptism of Francis Greenough
Keep up the good work Sandy You inspire us all !

HI Ian

That would be a good idea but do not forget to check for accuracy. LOL

Shame we could not find any graves (or did we).

I went into the pile by the wall and found some names and dates.

They were also some stones on the walkways (and footstones) so took those too.

Every one here (and elsewhere) inspires me too  :)

Oh no!!! Why can't I research Muddimans? (Anyway, I already did!) And yes, I know there are a lot of them. I think all of the 19thc ones are descended from Barker Muddiman.

Yes, MUDDIMAN is one of my names, also HANWELL and EARL (they moved to Long Buckby from Welton)

Betsy MUDDIMAN born 1829 to Isaac Muddiman and Elizabeth SEWELL (or SEAWELL, who married in Rugby)
married
James HANWELL born 1829 to William Hanwell and Fanny EARL.

I have seen Stephen's transcriptions, also the LB prs.

Well Marilyn

Most people researching their families in Long Buckby relate into the Muddimans.

Well  I am sure if Stephen still watches this list he would agree I showed him how to
do it.!!!! (make his books that is)  ;D many moons ago when we were both learners.

Obviously I can not help with anything as you already note you have seen the sources available.

I need an early night and tonight I mean to get one. LOL.

Here is your Ann Boyes gravestone.

Susan Markie aged 21 when she died in 1839 which means she was born abt 1817 to 18 and i have a birth of a Susanna Markie in 1817 Brington, Daughter of Thomas and Rachel Markie who moved from Brington to Northampton between 1816 to 1821 and also you found Rachel Markie, Thomas`s 1st Wife
The 2 Mary Ann Markies are also Thomas`s children one to his 1st wife and 1 to his 2nd wife !
the rest are of Joseph Markie and Rebecca Markies children.
which i did not know that they were there and now i have dates too !

HI ian

My poor back is really giving me pain after nearly another 4 hours in the graveyard. !!!!!!!!!

Still finding other graves not noted so I think I will try and do a grave yard plan as it
seems as though the stones have been moved over the years.

If you give me a couple of weeks I will try and place your graves into it (unless of
course you already have a more detailed one.)

I can not see any Markie graves having now gone around (and around) the whole of the church yard.

I will also see if you wish me to if I can help with your missing information.

Don't let me take over your work if you wish to do it your way.

Will be in touch .  :)

Sandy

The only plan i did was the one you have seen.
So the graves may still be there just not in the same place.  ???
I know there are some very old graves but i would of thought that Joseph Markie`s grave would of stood the test of time from 1881, but clearly not.

Oh dont worry sandy i never refuse any help, as sometimes i can do the same for others, and i will say this to anyone reading this if you need help in the East Kent area then i will see what i can do, as i will go to church yards or are local records office no problem.
and just to calrify things there, i am in Dover and the Medway is over an hour away ! LOL just in case some asks.

Hi Ian

I didn't mean the graves you had listed.  :)

Whilst at my 1st visit to the Record Office for nearly a year I looked up your
Greenough's and found 3 references to them.

I have taken digital images (copyrighted) so when I can read them (small print so
need my glasses LOL ) I will see if Thomas of 1811 is your man.

One does have the signature of Francis Greenough so bear with me.  :)

Off to bed now as had a really busy 6 hours at the N.R.O. and then had to download
and rotate over 400 images. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ian

Oh dear  :( can you send them back and get the right ones.

I did mean to say the other day that I looked for Francis's baptism on the N.R.O. St Seph's fiche but there was a bap at the right time but half of the information was missing  although it was a son. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good news is I have just looked at the 1851 census and have seen that Francis is noted as a Baker so he is the one on the 1837 Bond of Administration for Thomas Greenough.

Don't quote me on that until I have looked at them fully it is difficult when they were
only a digital camera image (that was what I was downloading yesterday) totally
readable.

The Thomas noted above was a Carpenter ring any bells?

Anyway I will post in the next couple of hours as one is three pages long and more than likely nowadays long winded. LOL.

Sandy

Hi Ian

Just read the second page (missed it 1st time  ;D) .

Thomas’s death recorded as 22nd January 1821.

The surety was £300.00 but it notes that he was not possessed of goods etc to that amount.

Maybe the delay in the 2 dates.

Hi Ian

2. Bond for Administration to the Effects of Thomas Greenough late of Northampton Carpenter
deceased Dated 5th March 1821.

John Freeman Victualler and Edward Rand Greenough Plumber and Glazier are 2 bounders

(This is interesting Ian)

Ann Linnell/now the wife of William Linnell of the same Town Mother and the bounder
Edward Rand Greenough eldest Brother and next of Kin .

Both John Freeman and Edward sign.

Obviously a lot more is said so this is just drawing off the important bits.

Now it is time for tea and finishing of my Easter Bags (will show you a piccy when I have done)
as the last one is Thomas of 1811 (father to Edward and Francis we now know for sure  ;D)
the 3 page Will.

WOW WOW WOW !
I have come across this Edward Rand Greenough a few times ! and thought what a strange name LOL ! didnt think he was related, but now i know he is and that Thomas is my 4 X Gt Grandfather !
I have come across this Plumber and Glazier before but not sure untill i look which ones it is, Clearly that is following in the family as is the Bakers. which Francis was in Bridge St.
So we can also tell from this and the grave stone in St Seps that his wife was Ann and she remarried to William Linnell.
So Edward Rand Greenough is the brother to Thomas.
And if i got this right then Thomas had a son called Thomas who died in 1837 ?

Taken from Alan Clarks marriage Inded
Thomas Greenough of All Saints to Ann Wood otp 15th May 1792 St Sepulchre By Licence
when Thomas died and if he married at the age of 21 then he would not be much older then 50 when he died

Also Edward Rand Greenough of St Seplulchre  married Ann Freeman otp 10th March 1814 St Giles.
So there is the Freeman Connection. so Ann must be the daughter of John Freeman Licensed Victualler
The IGI has quite a lot of the kids of Edward Rand Greenough  ;D

Ian ;D ;D
Title: Re: Transcript of St Sepulchres Church Graveyard, Northampton
Post by: drewsankie on Friday 07 April 06 19:39 BST (UK)
Also noted from my Transcript that on Thomas Greenough`s grave it says __ 5
so he could of been 55 or 65 when he died which give us the date between 1756 to 1766 also noted from Alan Clarkes Marriage index
Thomas Greenough  of All Saints to Ann Rans of All Saints 26 Jul 1733 taken from St Peters BTs
Bet you that Ann is Ann RANDS ! so Edward RANDS Greenough comes from his Grandmothers maiden name ! and Thomas after his father of course ! And that tradition of middle names coming from the mothers maiden name still continues right upto my Brother today !

Making headway or what !

I just think this is so incredable,
This is a very wealthy family !
and as i was going through the census i got the idea that they were indeed WEALTHY as Rand Edward Greenough is a Mechant and his wife a Merchants Wife who later on is mentioned in another Census as Occupation LADY !

So the Bear Inn is the one that is still there today and called the Bear Inn near the bus station ! and my 4 X Gt Grandfather was the owner !
The Bakehouse which was next door (no doubt still standing)
OH WOW i just dont belive it ! and if i am right this will be public house number 12 which my direct family was into ! i can safely say a lot of my family were shoe makers and publicans !
yes i think i need a trip up there to see this document for myself.
Still working on the Greenough side with lots more results to come i am sure.

by the way love the easter bags ;D

Hi Ian

Went to the Churchyard but was so cold I deceided to look up some of your Greenough's so you drew lucky.  ;D

Anyway found out from an aquaintance Jon Small who has noted all the Inn owners
that the Bear Inn No.11 Sheep St is still standing (but not the Bakehouse).

Owner in 1791 William Moore
1824 William Linnell (2nd husband of Ann Greenough formely Wood)
1830 John Edens (Noted on Bond 1.)

More to follow.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Sandy
I dont know how you do it !  ;D but i am glad you have !
all these little things builds up to a bigger picture.
I think the wealth passed down to the eldest son Edward Rand Greenough, as i thought to myself that Elizabeth Greenough must of married beneath herself !
my Gt Gt Grandfather Francis Allen as he was only a Boot Fitter.

Now if the Bakehouse has gone that tells me which side it was straight away, as now i belive that a Chinese resturant stands on that plot !

I wonder what connection if any that John Edens had to the Greenoughs, as i not found the connection to him yet, maybe just a good friend !

Now this Jon Small would be of intrest to me, wonder if he has Inn owners for around the 1950s as my father says that a Markie had a pub in Sheep st called the Bird in the Hand ? yet to id this Markie !

Now more to follow, you mean you have more ! :o :D

So the Grave you took the picture of which is Thomas Greenough was the fathers grave so the Sons grave is missing !
if aged 21 in 1821, but note it is January he was born in 1798 / 9 what a young age to go!
well we have now 3 sons to Thomas Greenough the publican
edward Rand b abt 1893
Francis b abt 1796
Thomas b abt 1799
Strange normally the 1st son is called Thomas ! unless there is another  :o

Right
Then Thomas Greenough who married Ann Wood his Father must be Thomas Greenough who married Ann Rans 26th Jul 1733 St Peters But that does seem to leave a big gap between 1733 and Thomas`s birth which would be around 1756 to 1766 ! do you think we have another marriage in between that !
there  is one that does fit which is really strange name
Baud Greenough of All Saints to Mary Smith at Cogenhoe 10th Mar 1763 !

Okay Ian

There are at least 4 graves in the Churchyard with the Inscriptions face down.  :(

Edward Rand is the1st Child that I found being baptised at St Sepulchre (that would match the marriage date)
May 27th recd 3d

The next baptism is the one with a large black column where the childs name is and I think is Francis
(but don't quote me on that) being born May 6th baptd May 16th 1797

The next is a daughter same black column born April 23d baptd May 14th 1801

Yippee one I can read and it is another son

Charles born Septr 8 Baptized Octr 7 1803.

Ian

Somewhere along the line you need to see if there is a will for Baud (I think I saw one  ;D) and confirm he is the missing link to the next Thomas.

The fact he was from All Saints means you could be on the right track but confirmation is required.

Seems as though you need a day at N.R.O.  ;D

Have you worked out that Ann could be the missing daughter's name (same as Mother's) who brings in the Edens.

Not sure about that as the Thomas we know for certain is marrying in 1792 so take of
at least 25 years bringing him down to the 1760's would put his father in the 1740's.

i am trying to work this one out on paper as i seem to have so many Thomas Greenoughs!

as we have 3 marriges now
Thomas Greenough to Elizabeth Barker 24th Jun 1723
Thomas Greenough to Ann Rans 26th July 1733
Thomas Greenough to Isabel Oakley 16th Aug 1748

which only leaves Baud Greenough to Mary Smith 10th Mary 1763

and there is no logical order to the Thomas  ones !

Now that Thomas of Francis i had got ! just no dates LOL !

Okay Ian

Here is one to leave you with coming up your lineage.  ;D

Northampton Independent August 7th 1915

Obituary
Mr R. S. Greenough
We regret to record the death at his residence Billing Road, on Tuesday
of Mr Robert S Greenough, one of the best known tradesmen in Northampton.
The deceased, who was 67 years of age, had been in business as a corn, coal, and builder's merchant for many years, succeeding to a florishing
business established by his father. He was a prominent member of the Gold Street Wesleyan Chapel, at which he had held many offices, including that of
organist, being a musician of no mean ability.
Much sympathy will be felt with the widow and adopted daughter.

And it is good night from me. Enjoy. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Sandy
Strange thing that Rand S Greenough married Ellen Dewing 1878 Norwich
Clearly a child from that family maybe born out of wedlock or her parents died.
therefore to give the child a good up bringing why not adopte

So Rand changed his name to Robert at some point

Now you found Thomas Greenough b 1821 son of Francis and Catherine
i see he married Sarah Ann Sutton 1847 Shoreditch
Sarah was born abt 1824 Lambeth.
they had 2 children
Emma Elizabeth b 1850 Northampton d 1853 St Lukes, London
Sarah Ann b 1852 which i think is Sarah Ann Caroline b St Lukes
in 1861 Sarah Ann the Wife is with her mother but it says married no sign of Thomas
Sarah Ann the daughter is with Catherine the Grandmother in Northampton.
then i lose Sarah Ann the wife no sign of her in 1871

I have only been to the N.R.O.  twice in the last year but yes I do have an awful lot of information.

You struck lucky as I had time to look for your people.

I have to scan every now and then and put onto cd roms or now a days dvds as they hold more.

Have sent you an e-mail re: Joseph Markie(ey).

Minnie Sister and Brother in Law
this could be Alice Minnie Greenough but she is the daughter Robert Edward Greenough and Alice the other R Greenough could his son Reginald of which i have no further info on
Robert Edward is the brother of Rand Sherwell Greenough.
which i think is the Robert S Greenoughs funneral

Ian

Post by: seahall on Wednesday 12 April 06 20:57 BST (UK)

The other evening I listed a report saying Robert S Greenough's obt from the N.I.

Then you and I agreeded (I think) that is was actually Rand Sherwell not Robert.

The Funeral listed is Rand Sherwell's as we know he lived at Billing Road and this is where the deceased resided.

I am going to leave you to it tonight.

Happy Hunting

Nothing on Ager, but that does not mean that there were none !

Both Sandy and myself have noted on one side of the church yard, many broken graves, either by weather or vandals.

Hello Sue
Well i dont remember seeing that grave unless it was inside.
My inscriptions were done back in 1996.
Pehaps if Sandy see`s this she may be able to thow a little bit more light on this, as she has photos of all the graves, so you never know, perphaps, this is one of the graves that was buried and now is standing.

Sandy do you have a record at all for Edward Masters, ?

Hello Sandy
Possibly Esther Hare and Richard Ager, I say possibly as I can't find a marriage for them but she died in St Sepulchre area and she seemed to have lived in that area a marriage between 1841 and 1863 if that is of any help to you.
Do you have deaths for that area as well?
Sue.......

Hi Sue

There is a marriage in the Northampton District 1847 for a Richard William Ager
he may be the one you need?.

Go to freebmd.com and see if you can find it.

Sandy
Title: Re: Transcript of St Sepulchres Church Graveyard, Northampton
Post by: sue 1950 on Friday 05 May 06 21:07 BST (UK)
That death looks right for Richard Ager.
Esther was born 1816 Gt Creaton she married Charles Hare at St Sep 23rd Aug 1838.
Esthers father was called Edward that was the Edward Masters grave that you found for me. So don't think that would be the marriage that you found .
I can't find Esthers husband  Charles at all on the census's but I can see Esther on 51 and 61 living with Richard, can't find a marriage but she died with the name Ager, I think that is her 28th June 1863 with the name of Ager so a bit confusing  did they do that in them days die with the name of the surname of the person they were living with.
Sue.....

Do you have the baps for the church please.

She is in the household of George Gee

George Gee 25 Carpenter Y

Susannah Gee month 1 Y
George Hare  2 Y
Charles Hare months 2 Y
Ester Hare 20 Y

No sign of Charles the elder.

Well Sue

Looking at the census images it seems as though Richard was the householder and
Esther on 1851 is from Brampton and Deaf  and a housekeeper.
1861 she is a servant from Boughton but noted as Hare.

So I am not sure how a marriage took place between them but the burials
I listed seem now to confirm they are the right people.

Hello Stephen
Sorry for the delay !
The grave is in a bad way as most are these days, but this is what i have got from it.

Rand

In Loving Memory of John ______ Rands ____ Son of _____ Rands
__________________________ Aged ___

In Memory of George Rands died June __ 1850
Also of Eleanor wife of the above died Dec 24th 1872 aged 87
Edward youngest son of George and Eleanor Rands died Oct 9th 1839 aged 12

(Note taken from the PR of St Seps.
John buried 29th July 1841 aged 4 Months
George buried 10th June 1850 aged 71
Eleanor buried 30th Dec 1872)

Also while doing the Greenough family i have noted a few with the middle name or even 1st name  of Rand so there may be a connection between the Rands and Greenough family.

I hope there is enough info there for you to sort out who it is.

Title: Re: Transcript of St Sepulchres Church Graveyard, Northampton
Post by: Stephen George-Powell on Tuesday 20 June 06 19:34 BST (UK)
Ian,

That is excellent, George and Eleanor are direct line relatives of mine and I didn't know when they'd died - so this is v useful. Also I have 6 children for them - but no Edward or John (I presume John is also their son) so that is also new.

I have been in contact with Lisa G, who is apparantely a distant relative of yours. We've been discussing the same part of my family - namely the Pirkins family of Pattishall - John Pirkins Wright (who's mother was a Pirkins) married one of George and Eleanor Rands daughters - and one off the resulting offspring of that union was my grandmothers grandfather.

I saw a few Rand (no 's') graves in St Leonards, Priors Marston, Warwicks last week - but no RandS.

Thanks again, very very helpful.

Stephen.

Hi there Ian and lizzieh4350. I too am interested in your querie and any information on William Griffiths Hollis, assuming that this is the family to whom the query relates. I am related to this man, not his Northampton family but his LONDON family, if you get the picture! It has taken me over thirty years to unravel this oneand I have only done so in the past few weeks. In London he was William George Hannen and his "wife" was one Annie More Heane fron Northampton. She was a very upright Godfearing lady who was a Baptist , given that I can not imagine how the situation ever came about. He had four daughters in London and never appears in any of the London family photos, or any of the censii, and now I know why!Apparently he employed 207 people in his fotwear manufacturing  enterprise. Is there a list of emplyees surviving? Does Annie's name appear on it? What was the manufacturing business called and what happened to it?The affair must have started when she was about 17 as the first child was born when she was just 19. Are there any photographs of his Northampton family? What happened to his youngest Frank? What became of the others? Ihope that there is a mausoleum/vault i would love to read the inscriptions, especially if there is a eulogy. After his rightful wife died ,he married Annie in 1893 at Westminster register Office. He used to write poetry to at least one of his daughters and was obvously a very loving father who cared very much for them and in all the pictures which I have they are very well dressed, not just ordinary aceptable dress. I do hope that ther answers to my quries as I want to pursue this and find out more. He lived at 1a Sheep street. So it looks if WGHollis was your relative we are halfcousins removed xtimes!
All the very best yours aye

Hello Tormor

It appears you are related to my husband, his great grandfather being the said Walter Griffiths Hollis.  Do you have the dates, birth, marriage, death of his children born to Annie?

We are away on holiday, on our return I can give you more info on WGH and his 'first' family.

He was a shoe manufacturer and is buried at St Sepulchre. The family had and married into money and had land around Northampton.

Regards, Liz Hollis

Hi Liz and Tormor

Welcome both of you to Rootschat.  :)

I wish Ian would answer I really miss him on the Northants Boards.  :(

The Hollis family you are both tracing, can you give dates of death at all.

I can see some graves in my collection, yet none marry up with your
names at the moment.

HI again.

Whilst the family you note above is William Griffiths Hollis, the gravestone
I have seems to be for his Mother and Father who was also a
Shoe Manufacturer living in Brunswick Place, Northampton.

The inscription reads.

IN MEMORY OF
WILLIAM HOLLIS J.P.
WHO DIED 25TH JULY 1876 (Buried 29th)
AGED 76 YEARS

ALSO OF ELIZABETH
WIFE OF THE ABOVE
WHO DIED MAY 6TH 1879 (Buried 10th)
AGED 71 YEARS

Hi Sandy

Thank you very much for the info posted above. That is a great help. Do you have any more info on him and his seven children? Do you know if he had any siblings?

Do you know anything about Frank Griffiths Hollis, 1868-1896? What did he do and why did he die?

If I came to Northampton, would I be able to identify any houses or graves? Do you know anything about the factory?

Best wishes

Tormor

Hi Liz

Thank you very much for your exciting reply, after over 30 years poking around, it seems like Pandora's box is opening up.

I am slightly confused as you say Walter Griffiths Hollis, whereas the son we have as Walter George and the father as William Griffiths. I look forward to hearing anything which you can tell me about William G and his first family on your return. You will see my queries to Sandy, which you may be able to answer if he is unable to do so.

From his second "marriage" to Annie, he had four daughters. Annie (known as Queenie), born 9 March 1865, initially married George Hunt whose Dover ferry was bombed by a Zeppelin in the 1st World War. She subsequently married twice more and had two daughters (I think), one of whom is still alive and I have met her and hope to meet her son shortly.

The second daughter was Helen (Nell), born 9 March 1866, married 16 June 1894 George W Scott. She died 30 October 1949. I believe they had 3 sons, all died; the youngest one dying in the Navy in the 1st World War.

The third daugher, Elizabeth Mary, (Aunt Lizzie), born 6 July 1868, married Arthur Eustace, died 21 April 1946. She had 5 children, including twins; only the 3 girls survived, the boys perished in the 1st World War. I am in touch with the last of that line.

The fourth daughter, Emily, born 25 May 1874, married Tom Howell, died 16 August 1950. She had 2 sons.

Do you know if a second family was rumoured? I am convinced that they knew about each other; one of the above had a son, Frank Griffiths! Ostensibly the reason for this was that he was named after a family friend who became an alcoholic, If Frank Hollis was an alcoholic, that would seem to clinch it.

The whole family lived at Camberwell, then in Surrey, described by W G in one of his letters as fair Camberwell, which in those days it was. Annie lived with Emily after W G's death. Do you know anything about Annie? Her father was a mathematical instrument maker. W G was said to have married "beneath himself". However, Ann Sharman was a farmer's daughter. Seems like a bit more camouflage. This is the second attempt at a reply to youas the first onle got wiped. I am not always as prompt as I have many interests so am not always available for a swift response, but will always get back to you as soon as I can.

Best wishes, Tormor

How do we move forward from here? This is all very well but it's like typing through a letterbox!

We don't come from or live in the area but your work has shown that it is worth going to see this collection before they get a work-out type vicar who thinks he'll pick up these stones just for practice. I wonder who owns them?!? An interesting piece of gen that the Church is 12th Century. Thank you for that. Is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a different one, or the same?

Many thanks and best wishes

Hi Tormor

I think your gravestones are safe.  :)

There used to be a whole pile of stones piled up in the Churchyard
which have now been removed.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the same as St Seph's.

There are only 4 round churches left in England, it was built after the Crusades.
It is also known as the Northamptonshire Regiment Church.

The graves are easy to find as if you go along Sheep St to the Gate, there
are on the left hand side. The Church is open in the Summer months.

There is another one that seems could be related as it names Griffiths as
a surname and Boulton, let us know who the Eilizabeth was who married
William the J.P. if you know.

Hi again Tormor.

It is difficult to read all the questions at once.  :)

I think you would enjoy your visit, which would benefit from a look at
original Parish Records of your ancestors at the Local Studies Area of the
Library or Record Office, if they Baptised at St.Seph's.

They may also hold other information about William Senr.

My avator is the picture on the left of my reply, it shows me as a young girl. :)

Hi
I recently found a reference to St Sepulchres in an old book in Blackburn Reference Library. I'm particularly interested in the Entwistle family (www.entwistlefamily.org.uk) and we found this article:

Captain William Entwissel of Northampton

 [341], ENTWISLE FAMILY
In the Church of St. Sepulchre at Northampton, on the floor of the Chancel, is a monument bearing the following inscription:-
“Here lye the remains of Captain William Entwissel, who was born in Lancashire, Bore arms at 16 and continued in the army until his death. He served in the wars of Flanders and the Netherlands under King William, and was in most of the battles fought there. During his Reign, in which he was often wounded, sometimes made Prisoner of War, and with the utmost hazard escaped being slain (?) in several engagements, always signalizing himself by his Courage at the time of action; who at length, after 20 years Peace, died of a sudden Mortification in his leg 22 July 1734, aged 76.”
‘LOCAL GLEANINGS RELATING TO LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE EDITED BY J.P. EARWAKER, M.A., F.S.A.’ REPRINTED FROM THE MANCHESTER COURIER VOL. I APRIL 1875-DECEMBER 1876
(BLACKBURN REFERENCE LIBRARY)

I wonder if anything remains of this inscription or if anyone knows more about William Entwissel?  ???

Hi Kevin.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

There was one stone to a Henry Mellin Olivant who died January 1866 aged 62.

He was buried at St. Seph's Jan 25th 1866 noted as living at Upper Mounts.

Also Ann his wife who died Dec 17th 1864 aged 61 and burial was Dec 21st 1864.

Ann Furniss their 2nd daughter was also noted on the headstone.

I will look at the original stone in a moment.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for your reply. If you could check out the grave for me that would be greatly appreciated. I'm surprised it is still standing and legible after all the years. Obviously the stone was of good quality. Had it been Portland stone, it would have eroded years ago. I tried to ring the Church to establish burial details and a plot number, but nobody is ever there. Frustrating to say the least!!

Hi.

I have managed to get a picture of the grave but i think the inscription has
got a lot worst.

I then looked at some census and other records and think i have worked out
who is on the bottom of the inscription.

There are some good trees on Anc* showing Henry and his son George's pictures
as I am sure you know.

Will post the picture when I get home.

It does not seem to be better as it is more worn than the original.

I took it with my 16mg camera so the picture itself is sharp.

I will look at the original taken years ago.

As to Churchyard Plan not many Churches in Northampton have surviving plans.

I think I already gave the burial info on previous posting.

There was also an Edwin Olivant died.

Burial St. Sephs
Pg. 35, No. 177
Edwin Olivant, North End, Augst 17 1835 aged 3 wks.

There was no baptism for him at St. Seps.

Here is the other Burial info for Henry and Ann.

St. Sephs
Pg. 56, No. 445
Ann Olivant, Mounts, December 21st 1864, 61 years

Pg. 87, No. 689
Henry Mellin Olivant, Upper Mounts, January 25th 1866, 62 years

Looking at the lower inscription it says the second daughter Ann Furniss.

Ann married Frederick William Furniss in Dec Qtr 1861, it was not at any
of the 4 main churches.

Ann died in Chorlton Reg District in Mar Qtr 1865.

Frederick is living on later censuses in Chorlton on Medlock/Salford with a
new wife Sarah Bland who he married in Mar Qtr 1866 in the Chorlton Reg District
and stays in Lancs.

Hi Sandy,

Sorry to be a pain, but would you kindly let me have the full transcription on the Gravestone for Henry Mellin Olivant , Wife and Daughter, as I can only make out cetain parts of the transcription when I enlarge the image. I want to get all the facts correct before I put it onto the Family website.

Best regards,

Hi Ian - I'm new to this site and came across your post in an online search for St Sepulchre, Northampton, which according to another researcher was the place fo residence of an ancestor, John Rumble. I don't see any Rumbles on your list of headstones - but he was married to a Barnard ... would you mind sending me the Barnard info that you have to roberta@food-wine-travel.com ?
Many thanks and by the way - are you aware whether St Sepulchre was ever the name of a village? or just a church?

I am interested in the name Greenough. Let me explain that I am BRICK collector, especially of locally made ones. I live in Towcester and my Grandfather was a Railway Bricklayer. I have over 225 differently named bricks in my collection, I contribute to a website that lists nearly 5,000 bricks from all over the UK. When I found a brick at a local reclamation yard with GREENOUGH in the frog, I started to research it. Thanks to this website and others I have found that he owned a steam operated brickworks in Kingsthorpe Road, Northampton, in joint ownership with Henry Martin. If you would like a photo of the brick or any other information about the works, let me know.
