Hello all,
I have just received a death certificate which shows the deceased was buried at Camperdown cemetery (now in Newtown) Sydney, on 17th December 1856.
Does anyone have access to an index for this cemetery? I am looking for the following:
William WEST
died 15 Dec 1856 aged 37
buried 17 Dec 1856
Any help appreciated :)
Thank you

Hi Prue, Not sure if this is the place you mean as there seem to be a couple of cemeteries in Camperdown. You may already have this (as it is not an online index as you hoped for), but there is the offer of 'lookup'

Another site is the Australian cemeteries Index at http://cemindex.arkangles.com/

Brilliant, thank you both. Yes Sue, that seems to be the place. It just says "Camperdown" on the death cert, but I know it's CofE so I will follow up the St Stephens lead.
Many thanks again to you Sue and OzyBob! :)

Thanks, Falkyrn - looks like a useful site, but seems to be just for regional areas as yet. I've bookmarked it though, because I think it might be useful for another bit of the family that I'm trying to track. So thank you! :D

Hi Prue
http://www.australiast.uts.edu.au/ARCHIVE/CAM07b.shtml
"Camperdown Cemetery
The cemetery surrounds St Stephen's Anglican Church, which fronts onto Church Street, Newtown......The burial records of the Camperdown Cemetery are held by the sexton at St Stephen's Church and a copy is also held by the Society of Australian Genealogists, Richmond Villa, 120 Kent St, Sydney..."
the Society willretrieve an entry from the Camperdown records for a fee - their site: (Search Databases > Library Catalogue)

Brilliant! Thanks Anne - I will write off to them and see what turns up.
And THANKS OzyBob for all those websites!! You've been busy - thank you so much. There are some good resources there to keep in mind.
Just out of interest, I wrote to the person at ozgenonline who offered lookups at St Stephens, but they only have an MI index, and William isn't on it (not surprisingly). Still it might be useful for someone else in future - I got a reply almost straight away ::) Very nice of them.
Cheers to you all :D

Hi Prue,
Sorry to be dense. What's MI?
Sue

next trip to State Library - will check if there was death notices
-
Brilliant! Thanks Flinders, that would be great!
Sorry sparrett, didn't get notified that you'd posted...an MI is a memorial inscription, i.e. writing on a headstone.
Cheers, all!

Just come across this thread. I've also been looking for a grave in Camperdown and used this site which lists all the graves in both alphabetical and chronological order:
http://gutenberg.net.au/camperdownNSW/_home.html
If you're still looking, this may help (I don't think it's been referred to in the earlier part of the thread - apologies if it has and I am repeating something you already have.)
