Hi Sue,
My HUMEs are as follows
John HUME and Beatrice LIDDEL had a son Walter in 1819 at Allanhaugh Mill, Hawick.
Walter married Margaret SCOTT in 1855. They had children John, Robert, William, James, Isaac, Walter, Mary and Beatrice, all at Allanhaugh Mill in Hawick.
Walter (jnr!) married Christian ELLIOT (my GG Grandfather's sister) in Hawick.
I don't have a connection to your HUMEs yet, but the names seem similar so there is a chance it mght be the same family. I guess I will have to see if my John HUME is related to your Robert, as I guess they would be the same generation. Hopefully that will turn something up.
Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare
I am just off into my Scottish side again ( I have been neglecting them for a while)
I have an interest in a Walter Inglis Lumsden who married my g aunt Isabella Shiel. My Shiel family all came form Roxburgh.
Isabella and Walter married in 1900 so I am just rooting around for loose ends re them
Is it possible for you (if it isn't too much trouble) to transcribe the details you have on the Inglis and Lumsden families

Hi Jim,
Sorry, I have only just picked my research back up after a long hiatus so I am a little rusty.
I haven't done any research on John Hume and Beatrice Liddel yet, as they are not my direct line. My link is from Walter Hume and Margaret Scott's 6th son - Walter. He married my GG Grandfather's sister. However, I do have a specific interest in the line as apparently there was some kind of controversy in the family with one of the Walters. My grandmother remembers her parents arguing about a Walter Hume when she was young and she specifically asked me to track him down. I have now found several Walter Humes in the family and no controversy!
Anyway, back to the research. I think Walter (son of John and Beatrice) was born on October 13th 1819 at Allanhaugh Mill in Hawick according to his marriage certificate (there is a lot of extra info on 1855 certificates that you don't get in other years), but I can't find the birth in the OPRs. I would expect John and Beatrice to have been married before 1819 in that case, but I have no idea where.
Since John and Beatrice are not marked as deceased on Walter's marriage certificate, it might be worthwhile searching for them in the 1841 and 1851 census records - that should give their places of birth and approximate ages. It might also be worth getting their death certifcates to work out their ages.
One thing to mention (and apologies if you are already aware) but you won't find a marriage certificate for John and Beatrice as they would have been married before the introduction of Statutory registration, so its the parish registers that will have to be searched.
I hope this helps a little.
Cheers,
Clare

Clare
Thanks for info.
John and Beatrix, ( also spelled Betrix and Beatrice ) appear in 1841, 51 and 61 Censi at Allanhaugh Mill, as does the son Walter in 1851 in the same household, but same address and different household with his wife Margaret (nee Scott )in 1861.
In the Census John Hume has his birthplace as Cavers, Hawick abt 1784. There is a baptismal record for 1783 of a son baptised to the Father John Hume in Cavers ( I have copy of baptismal record ), so must be him. Therefore Walter's Grandfather was also John Hume, residing near Cavers in 1783. No more record of that John Hume yet.
Beatrix Liddel was born at Hobkirk, Rox. to Robert Liddle and Margaret Scott in 1789, therefore four years older. In 1861 Census she is recorded as 81 years old.
Hope this helps you too.
Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks for that - I will add this into my continuing research.
For info, here is the info I have on the Hume line. It's not much as (as I said) it isn't my main line.
Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare By pure chance I found your posts re spare birth certs and found two which were of great interest.
1/ 1870 Francis Paterson, (F) Andrew Paterson (M) Helen Elliot
Francis was a brother of my Grandmother Elizabeth Paterson. Helen Elliot was the sister of my great grandmother Janet Elliot.
2/ 1891 Mary Alice Bell (F) James Elliot Bell (M) Helen Crozier Hogg
The Janet Elliot in No1 was the mother of James Elliot Bell who was the younger brother of my grandfather Arthur Bell.
There is a name of the family gravestone in Hawick which always puzzled me ie Maggie who died in infancy and was assumed to be a child of Arthur Bell and Janet Elliot.
However on checking the DOB and DOD of Mary Alice they check exactly with the gravestone. Therefore I find a sixth child of James and Helen both of whom died in Callender and are buried at Bridge of Allan.
THE PUZZLE IS SOLVED THANK YOU
For your Information the name Elliot refers to the Elliots of the "FLEX" at Hawick and the Middle name of Elliot carries on in My line to Me and my son and grandson. The First name of the eldest son has been Arthur for seven generations.
I see the names Elliot and Bell feature in your list and you have been researching them. So if you have any more hidden gems please let me know. Always glad to help.
Thanks again for the lead on Mary Alice.

Hi Arthur
I will send you over a message with the transcription of the two births you have mentioned.
The list of spares was compiled from the births I had saved from the Scotlands People. Since they are three to a page, there are usually two on the page that aren't relevant to my research (at least yet) but may be of use to others, so I'm not necessarily researching all the names in that list.
That said, I am researching Elliots. My maternal grandmother was an Elliot and, thus far, I have managed to get back to ca.1810 with them in Castleton parish at which point an illegitimacy has slowed me down a little. I have no links with the name Bell or Paterson at this point - but of course, that's not to say I won't at a later date!
Thanks,
Clare
-
Hi Clare Thanks for the info you sent. As I mentioned it has filled in one gap on my tree only one more to find.
You mentioned the Elliots. I have many Elliots of Newcastleton (Castleton) on my tree going back to 1725. Some of these may be of interest to your research.
Thanks again.

Thanks Arthur - I will message you my current brick wall to see if you have any ideas.

Hello Clare!
Rather late, but could you give me the transcription of John Johnston's birth cert? Hawick 1863.
Thanks!
Grisel

Hello! I am especially interested in all the birth certs where Thomas Best Hay and Ann Murray are the parents. I am 99% certain that I am related to these folks through my BEST line. If I am correct, I would dearly love to exchange information with you! ;D Sincerely, Pat
-
I am not aware that the names Best or Murray are anywhere in our tree. John Johnston is quite a common name, isn't it?
However, I suppose we're all related somewhere! :)

Hi Clare
I know this is an old thread, but please could you send me the details of Hannah Laidlaw Fairholm 1901?
We have just discovered that my grandfather was adopted, and this name and DOB matches that of his biological mother. We have found no leads on her other than a Google search which brought up your post!
Thanks very much!
