I'm just being curious ....my Mum would say nosey!!
How or why did you choose your Rootschat profile name?? (Promise not to tell :-X....... ;D)
I ended up with my cat's name as I couldn't have my own name (can't remember if it was already "claimed" or if I entered something wrong.....quite possible with me!)
It does make me smile when I see some of the names here...I end up trying to imagine what that person is like!
The only name I can understand why it was chosen (other than those that appear to use their own names ofcourse) is GRACELAND.....obviously not because you're an Ozzy Osbourne or Charlotte Church fan Graceland!!! (No offence to those who might be ;D)
So please satisfy the curiosity that killed the cat!
tabitha :)

Because I love that style of embroidery ................. Casalguidi
-
It's a nickname I gained a few years ago at work...can never remember the name of the book (letting myself down there! ::) ) but I was 'Lord Emsworth' for a while and it eventually became Emsworthy. :)
Emma ;)
-
Just had to "Google" you Casalguidi!!!!! .....Well I never knew that!
tabitha ;D
-
because we liked the advert "it does what it says on the tin"
Is that not right?
RootsChat ;)
-
The second part is a hangover from my student days. The first part is because I have two teenage sons who are 10 -12 inches taller than I am and there are occasions when I feel distinctly small as a result! ;)

Hi All,
My youngest daughter's idea, the in word at the local primary, apparently.
kooly.
-
hi everyone,
Sorry to be a bore, but I seem to have little imagination, so I just chose my first two initials. 'Caroline W'. I cannot divulge my second name, my mum thinks it's a lovely name but unfortunately I am unable to share her enthusiasm :'(
My children are also sworn to secrecy about my name, although sometimes they think it hilarious to announce it when I least expect it :-[
-
;D ;D ;D ;D
Having most of my research on the Isle of Wight(IOW),Maiden sounded good at the time, sounds young, I can dream for a while. :D :D :D
-
i came from notts/derby border near sherwood forest,so became maid marion, stuffed up a few answers so changed to maidmarionoops
-
Because I've always been known as "Ticker" Tymon since my infant school days. Don't really know why - it just seems to go! ;D
-
I was brought up on the forest (in Sussex), so decided on a bit of local flavour.
The rest of my family think I'm a country bumpkin anyway.
Phil
-
My christian names are Frances Anne and among my living family members there are 3 Frances(Fran and Fanny) and 3 Annes(Annie) so I get called Juddee.
Utter confusion otherwise!!
Juddee
-
I'm a true blue Aussie and my name is Shirley, so it just sounded logical at the time :) :)
aussieshirl ;) ;)
-
Hej,
For me it was easy. Steve had already been taken so I used my daughter's name. As it's short I thought that most people would just assume it was my initials or something. Regardless of my username I still sign mail with Steve.
Steve
-
I got mine because I am only 4' 10". By coincidence my husband who is only 5' 6" and with the surname Dalton also got the same nickname because of the outlaws the Dinkey Dalton gang.
dinkey
-
Thanks for all of your "confessions"......keep them coming please!!
It's fascinating and helps me with my mental pictures of you all!!!! ;D
tabitha aka Claire! :)

My great great grandfather (on one side) were both called Edmund Bear and he was born in 1843. He was known as Ted and it always amused me.
One of my relations was nicknamed Cub, even up till his fifties when he passed away.
Teddy
-
Rootschat would not accept just plain Sue - Susan or Suzie so ended up as Suey..
have to say, I often have a look at someones profile if they have a 'sexless' name just to see if they are a boy or a girl ;D
Suey.
-
As a youngster, pre marriage, my initials were IPA. My mom and dad, who were very fond of the hops, said that it stood for India Pale Ale! So that's me!
Still, I suppose it's better than...I P Daily! ;D
India,
Building an Ark in California!

I registered here way, way back in January 2004. I didn't know what the site would turn out to be like, so I didn't want to use my real name.
I never had a nickname at school, either, so I chose to use just use my initials: SS.
I thought it may bring images of nazis, so I added my place of birth: Rhondda.
I initially signed in as SS Rhondda, but many people began assuming I was female ??? - as in SS Rhondda sounds like a ship & ships are deemed to be female ???
So I modified it to the present username of SS from The Rhondda :D.
-
I think mine's pretty straight forward, don't you??
;D
-
Hi "tabitha"
I have a black cat named Tabitha too! I call myself erniecee because my friend's nickname for me is Ernie ( my name is Erin) and my last name starts with a " C " So eniecee! ;D
-
Don't know why I came with my "pet" name. My boyfriend (now ex) called me Boongie or Lady Boongimere and he is Moodle.
And well Pam - that's just me!
P ;D
-
I confess! I'm a dental hygienist :) :)
-
I'm just being curious ....my Mum would says nosey!!
How or why did you choose your Rootschat profile name?? (Promise not to tell :-X....... ;D)..........
I simply used my Initials, at the time of registering It did not occur to me that the login would be my ID on the site, otherwise I might have picked Anglers Rest.

You can change it in your profile...
-
Thanks for that. I did change the ID, but decided it looked even less personal than JDG, so I changed it back!
Thanks for that though!
Julie
-
mines self explanatory, but i will admit, when i first joined, i was getting the males and females mixed up. i am a bit thick i know, but for ages i thought grace land was a girl called grace,{sorry graceland} andi did not know till today that ss rhondda was not a girl, named rhondda {sorry again} and funnily enough it does make a difference , if you think you are talking to another female,it comes accross as to familier if the person is a male, there are still lots of names out there, that i dont know the sex of , so i am care ful, when i speak to them in case i get it wrong, i will just do like we do in the potteries, and call everbody duck, ok, nora T
-
Mine is my first name, Lea, and the first three letters of the word "genealogy", which equal "Leagen". In this case it is pronounced Lee-Gin but my first name is actually pronounced Lee-a like the Hebrew Leah. I have an accent mark over the letter e in my name which gives it the long a but I don't know how to type an accent make over the e when I type it out. It is the French spelling for the Hebrew Leah. Leagen.
-
:o :o :o Girl Nora :o :o :o
;D No you are quite right it hard to work out if its a male or female you are chatting too !!
Thick Nora i don,t think you are !! :D :D
-
You're not the only one Nora. I, too, thought that SS RHONDA was a "she" - probably because of a lady named Rhonda that I know. There again, I have seen HACKSTAPLE refer to me as a "he" at least twice so we're not the only ones who don't always get it correct :D
Tabitha, a cat did spring to mind so I was right that time! By the way, an interesting topic!
Casalguidi
-
My " nickname " was choosen for me by a mate. I couldn't think of one.
Polly is short for my name, but pollynation due to i have 5 kids ;D
It's a really good topic. Interesting to see how we were wll "named"
Best wishes
Pauline
-
I chose Olly because it was a nickname I had years ago when I was at school.
I get tried of correcting everyone that spells my christian name wrong - Olwen - so thought I'd go with Olly because we're always looking back to years ago, aren't we?
Olly
-
Mine is just my initials. Nothing so exciting really.
-
I am glad you dont think i am thick Mr, Graceland, and I am pleased you get mixed up as well Casalguidi, but confession! I thought you were a a chap till you wrote something about embroidery or tapestry, Im sorry about that, thats what you have to do , look for clues, { but then again some men do embroidery and tapestry} Oh well its all good fun, ok nora
-
No problen Nora all good fun !!
Ps Elvis was a man !! ;D
-
Maybe we should all have those little male/female signs on the side over there <-- ...... to help the confused among us!! ;D
tabitha
-
Good idea !!!
-
:) :)
Great idea Tabitha - simple yet effective !
;) ;)
-
Lovely picture Graceland...nothing like me ...but I can dream!!! ;D
(She says reaching for the bleach bottle and corset!!!!!! ;))
tabitha
-
;D See you will have to put your picture on now so we can compare !! ;D ;D
Glad you liked it !! :D
-
:) :)
Why don't you put your picture on Graceland - all that pelvis girating is making me dizzy (he he)
:) :)
-
Here you go...don't know if it's sized right!!!.......and yes Graceland...it's now your turn! ;D
-
;) ;)
Nice pickie Tabitha - lovely smile
-
Natives from my part of Kent are called 'Swampies', which most locals normally consider an objectionable term of derision. However, I take perverse pride in the name, so it virtually chose itself!
Swampy
-
Tabitha always makes me think of Bewitched but that just shows my age!
I love guessing who is male & who is female! Having a sexless name on here is fine because (I hope) we are all here for the right reason. It could be dangerous elsewhere though.
Teddybear
Male. ;D
-
If you want to know if you are talking to a make or female click on the little square icon with a face and look at their profile.. ;)
Hav'nt yet come across anyone who has put N/A or other ;D ;D
-
I have - come across people who did not put male or female on their profile !! :(
I have - put 'male' on my profile ;D
PS:
I am called Bob and I live in Berlin. Do I still need to explain my name ? :P
-
:) :)
Good job you did put male on Bob !
Wouldn't want to get you mixed up with the female BOB in Black Adder would we ?
:) :)
-
... and besides which, I think the portrait of me, by my daughter, makes things pretty clear ;D ;D ;D
( Clue: it's not a very common hairstyle, among females !!)
-
Nice picture but nothing like the little you i put on ! ;D
I have put the picture of me and family below as you must have missed it before xmas !! :D
-
Not taken at Gloucester Docks then Graceland!!!
Lovely family :)
tabitha
-
Noooo,
Abit better than there !!! ;D ;D ;D
-
Thought so!!......I don't remember the water being quite so clean and blue looking!!! ;D
-
A, So you have been to GLOUCESTER !! ;D
b, The picture is Hawaii ! :D 2002 ..
Did you like Glos ?
-
I used to live in Longlevens!!
Worked at Whitbread Beer Co (before they sold it!) and sidelined at The Royal Oak in Hucclecote!!!
I have some fond memories of Gloucester. ;D
-
:D
My wife sis lives in Wilkes Ave Hucclecote !
Small world eh !! :D
-
Amazingly so!! :D
-
It's a nickname I gained a few years ago at work...can never remember the name of the book (letting myself down there! ::) ) but I was 'Lord Emsworth' for a while and it eventually became Emsworthy. :)
Emma ;)
Lord Emsworth was the proud owner of "The Empress Of Blandings"
(P.G. Woodhouse)
Chose my nickname as two of the letters are my initials and the other one isn't. ::)
-
Ah yes wasn't that the prize pig? ;D
Mine is a bit too obvious, but I had no idea what to expect when I registered. Too, too boring of me! I'd have preferred something more interesting ... like Fred.
Regards
jonathan
-
mine comes from my surname Rowntree it gets shortened to rowdy and obviously as my husband is the original one and only Rowdy I have to be Rowdy-Girl
-
Mine was my nickname that I used to use when I used to spend a lot of time on the Buffy chat room in Yahoo (yes I'm a massive fan).
It was give to me by my godson Jamie after I dyed my hair red and it was cut short (its now dark purple/black and longer). The 4873 is part of my old e-mail address because there were so may Willows on the site and it was the easiest way to remember it but it mainly got cut down to Will48 for ease
By the way AmyK said I was the first person she had met off this site who actually looked like their nickname
I am tall but no I am not in the least bit 'willowy' lol ;D
-
;D mmm! try to guess who,s tree i started on first
-
4mywife - excellent if you don't mind me saying.
Although I love my husband dearly HIS first thought would be 4myself. ::)
-
I am currently researching the supposed "Battle of Radford". The hero is Fremund ;D who was killed in the Battle :'( and later made a saint :). It seemed a good choice and a change from my actual nickname of Potter which has been with me for forty years. I sign some posts as Pete, which is my name.
Fremund ;)
-
;D reply to cw.when i started to do my tree i did toy with using that name and went as far as checking to see if i could use 2 name,s :-[
-
Oh please don't spoil it :'(
I had thought what a lovely man and so rare ;)
Now you have left me thinking - "they are all he same" ;D
Sorry, I only jest, I am not so narrow minded. ::)
Caroline
-
It has been my "nickname" for many years, so I guess it's as good as any.
-
Hi Jonesy,
My nickname used to be Jonesy too!! Jones was my maiden name and even my teachers used to refer to me by it aswell.
Another alternative was Jonah or JJ!!!!!!
Jan :)
-
I actually married a Jones,my maiden name was Farrell, hence thats the family tree I am interested in . I did live in South Wales for a number of years, before moving to "Aus"
-
It was the only thing I could think of when the sign-up prompted me for an I.D. ::)
Mine was a nickname when I was at school, only one of my close friends used it, and it didn't really stick, but when I signed on the site there had been a lot in the media about internet stalking, so I wanted to anonymise myself a bit.
K. ;)
-
A, So you have been to GLOUCESTER !! ;D
b, The picture is Hawaii ! :D 2002 ..
Did you like Glos ?
Graceland when in 2002 was it !!! I was on my honeymoon in Hawaii in 2002, left on the 11th. If not mistaken thats Waikiki beach with Diamond head in the background, we stayed in on of the hotels on Waikiki beach.
-
As I come originally from Newcastle upon Tyne and I thought geordielass would be a good nickname for me even though I have been here in Australia since 1968.
Cheers
geordielass

:D :D :D :D
Hi Kazza !
I think you've chosen a great name for a forum like this.
One thing though, I find the giant reptile thing really repulsive and ugly, and not very representative of a female. Why don't you post a nice pickie of yourself for us all to admire instead.
;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Well, someone has to support the lad, so I volunteered! I think he's a great driver, I watch all the races if possible.
-
My nick-name from when I was in the Army
-
No longer a 'boy' ........ just wishful thinking I guess.

Hello Everyone, from the USA. We of Engish descent all know the meaning of randy, therefore, a combination of that & scott=ranscott. Thanks to all, for the lighter side. Am a big fan of Eastenders, and shows we can pick up on PBS, here in PA. researching Fluck, Fluke, Flook: Simons, O'Neill - all in Continental Europe. ranscott
-
but it mainly got cut down to Will48 for ease
When I get to know you, will Will4 suffice for short? ;D
Paul
-
LMAO
Yup will4 ......... ;)

:-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ Think I'm about to change mine to Suet - the T is too close to the Y on the ketboard - see what I mean? :(

I'm originally from Manchester, love hiking, and have ended up a long way from home - hence Manchester Rambler. For those unfamiliar with the area, it's the title of a song written by Ewan MacColl for the "mass trespass" of 1932, when thousands of hikers confronted police and gamekeepers on Kinder Scout in protest against landowners who were trying to block access to the moors.
Here's the last verse:
So I'll walk where I will over mountain and hill
And I'll lie where the bracken is deep;
I belong to the mountains, the clear running fountains
Where the grey rocks rise rugged and steep.
I have seen the white hare in the galleys
And the curlew fly high overhead,
And sooner than part from the mountains
I think I would rather be dead.
Rambler
-
Ewan MacColl
I like your style - Manc Wanderer doesn't have the same ring to it! :)
I always 'enjoy' ::) it when I hear an Irish band playing in an Irish pub striking up with 'Dirty Old Town'. I've won more drinks than I can recall by taking bets on where the song is about. Dublin, for some reason, always comes out top. Its only rarely that anyone gets it right - Salford, of course! ;)
all the best
Paul
-
My party piece - given sufficient alcohol and a guitar!
Rambler
-
Jinks was a nickname at school,
There was also a Pixie and Dixie,
Sorry old cartoon characters,
I might change it at a later date, but it was the
only thing I could think of when I registered.
-
Chicabee
My first name is CHristy, I'm from CHICAgo, and I've used "Chica" to address my sis-in-law when sending emails-no special reason. Lengthening it to Chicabee just sort of happened, too...gives it a little more flare. The full-lenght version is
ChicabeeC.
-
Hi Tabitha
Like you I choose the name of our cat "Matty" she is 19 years old and now spends a lot of time in doors so it was an easy choice of nick name for rootschat.
Matty ;D ;D ;D ;D
ps I am female too
-
Bit boring, really.....I'm Scottish and a mum ;D.
-
Hi everyone,
As many have already said, wasn't sure how the site would turn out, so didn't use my real name.
Claudia was the name of the daughter of the previous occupants of our house!
There were references to her all over the house when we moved in - name plates on doors and books behind radiators, etc.
No reasoning behind the 99, thought Claudia on its own was boring!
Sign Claudia on my postings as it seems to confuse people when I sign Joanne!!
Claudia99 in Manchester, UK
-
As others have said, didn't want to use my real name to start with so I used the name of the Underground station where I grew up as a child. Seemed to be unusual enough but I usually sign of with my own name now.
Mary
-
I chose my username as my first name. It's not a very common name, and I didn't think that RootsChat would ever get this big. :-\
:o
-
I'm a biologist; I always use the Latin name of some animal or plant as an alias.
-
Never thought of looking at this Lighter side before. Good laugh, well done.
My name Salty, well I could have chosen one of several that I have had over the years.
Tommy trouble, Slim, Spock, plus a few others.
I happened to mention to someone in my office where I work now in Powys, that I had spent 10 years in the Andrew, Royal Navy. From then on I have been known as Salty to one and all.
Tom
-
My name, like others, just happened. There are too many Carol's that you end up with Carol 999993788 and who can remember that.
So I used part of one of the website that I have, a work in progress at the moment but the others are growing fast.
Genjunction a shortened genealogy junction as in this hobby there are always junctions, crossroads and dead ends and plenty of traffic lights to slow you down.
It seemed to fit, so why not

Just a continuation of my Dads nick name, due to his younger brothers garbling George.
Cheers, Goggy ;)
-
Got too many nicknames on other sites, so I thought it would be a good idea to use my proper name for a change.
??? ;D
-
My name is one of my all time favourite albums (by Jethro Tull), chosen because it was playing in the background when I signed up and I can never think of anything clever when I need to ;D
Stephanie is far too common so that was out of the question lol! but I usually sign off with it.
Tabitha, that's a great photo you have there, a real cute kit.
Steph.
-
Erato, that struck a chord in my egg shaped memory! Wasnt that one of the Greek muses? If so,and correct me if I,m off beam, she is in the right place in this W.M.D day+age!!!
Cheers,Goggy 8)

I think she was a muse of poetry. In real life, a genus of small, attractive, but unspectacular marine gastropods.
-
I have been using Siouxzie, since I was about 11 (1973). Definitely before I'd heard of Siouzxie Sue and the Banshees, I think she copied it from me. It was more to do with my love of old black and white westerns on the telly of an afternoon and my sympathies lying with the native americans, I was a strange 11 year old. I used to make the S be a snake with a long forked tongue. But I too sign with my actual name Suzanne, as it seems more grown up, not that I am or anything.
-
Having Irish roots(albeit not Kerry ones) i celebrated and saw in the new millennium at the Earl of Desmond in Tralee.Sometimes being guilty of suffering from senior moments its an easy name to remember.Tralee
-
My first name was taken so I went for my second one Rosanne
-
;) ;) ;)
Isn't anyone else going to tell us how they chose their Rootschat name ?
:D :D :D
-
Since my original post on this thread, I have changed my user name.
Lloydy is my husband's nickname ;D
Jan
-
I chose my name very sentimetally as I was doing the family tree I called myself what my Gramps used to call me :)
Mimosa
-
Mine was a simple matter of remembering. I tend to write myself notes to remember things, then forget where I put the notes, so I chose my Grandfather's initials since I was doing genealogy research.
-
Since I have lots of nicknames from all over the web. I decided I wanted a totally new one that was just connected to genealogy. One of my sons favorite cartoons was on TV at the time I was registering and it has a beaver in it. And beavers dig right? Since I was looking for my Burrow family in the West Country - Burrow Digger came to mind and it fit perfectly. And a very tenacious female Burrow Digger I am too. :)
BD
-
I normally use my cat's name peanut but I thought it might pay off to use my family name Earley in case anyone shared a common surname interest. Later I changed it to Earley bird because I always think my surname sounds so hard.
Wished I'd used peanut now .... ::) ho hum
-
I tried a few and they were all taken so named myself after my favourite cursor, which is a small bonfire. I expected it to have been taken too.
Its got nothing to do with the fact that I'm a closet pyromaniac. Honest!!
;D
Flame
-
Well, I started off with my name but thought it was a bit boring after a while, so I changed it to Chui after an adorable Leopard from the BBC's Big Cat Week!
-
This post is great :D I always thought Moscan was a fella until she put me right ... ;D
Mine is dead boring, like Suey (I don't mean your name is boring Suey) I mean all the Sue's were taken up, so I just knocked off the 'e'.
I did change it to 'Blue' once, but then forgot who I was, so changed it back ???
One of the many names I love on here is 'Fizzybubble' wish I had thought of something more exciting.
Plain old
Su :-\
-
I chose my name because it was my gran's family I started looking for so figured gransworld was a good choice.
-
the SC are my initials and the RATTLETRAP came from when I was researching old cars and thought they sounded good together.
Scrattletrap
-
JAG are my initials, 'JAG I am' didn't have the right ring to it so I decided to make it JAG u are, although I can't claim to be sleek like the cat or expensive like the car! Julie ::)
-
Hi,
Now don't you believe it there is nothing plain about "our SU" she loves angles and is a very caring person :) and loves animals -
Matty
-
Hi all,
Keziah was my grandmother's middle name; my name was too common even with add ons!!! :D
Susan
-
Aw shucks Matty, I've gone all embarrassed now :-[
Thank you for your kind words.
IF I'd have realised you were named after your cat, I could have called myself Rodney after our rabbit ;D then folk would have thought I was a fella too ;D ;D
Su
-
Dimps is my family nickname. I had dimples as a baby... Now all say, "aah."
Deborah
-
I tried to use the name Sleepy on another forum, but was taken and went for Snowwhite instead. (after going through the rest of the dwarves - minus Grumpy) The numbers are not my age!
I did try for some greek mythology names but those were always taken too so stuck with snowwhite!!
Some of these names are great! I too sit and try to think what they mean. Great topic! :D
-
I chose alllegs because my nickname has always been 'Legs' then my granddad won some money on a race horse called Alllegsnobrain, which is highly appropriate for me as I'm 5ft 11, blonde and incredibly dizzy, but I always spelt it wrong!! So shortened it to alllegs!
Not very exciting really, but probably the only printable nickname I have!!
Legs
xxxx
-
Cos its the name of the street my mother-in-law used to live in. Regards Steve
-
How boring am I, I chose the name I was born with!! I guess being blonde its an easy one not to forget!
Kylee (aka BLOND3)
-
I chose my name because it is a bike. An old Harley Ironhead engine 1000 cc (heavy :o) as opposed to the new ones with aluminium engine :D slch is the model which went to 1984.
John Rowley
-
Adie is my name, CGH is my grandad's initials... er, he's the military man on 'Foliages!!
-
Its the name only my Nan and current partner have ever used for me. The spooky thing is my partner had never heard anyone call me by it and my Nan died 20 years ago. She spoilt me rotten so I guess this guy must be the real thing and I feel its a lucky one for me.
-
Lets have less of the word 'current' then, dinie .. unless you're keeping him on his toes! :)
-
Definitely not, this one's for keeps. Been married, divorced, lived together - done it all as they say and decided i'm getting too old to do all that again (only just into my 4th decade) and he cooks my dinner and washes and irons for me as well. Before anyone asks - sadly he has no brothers LOL
-
Total neewbie this is my first ever posting on any site.
I chose the name of my dog "kitch" the 59 comes from my birth year.
He was called kitch because when we got him he refused to come out of the kitchen for 2 weeks, so kitch was born
-
Flipster. A nickname I was given by some work colleagues years ago..
Taken from my real name down to Flipper (yeh, like the dolphin!), then shortened to Flip and then one of my team started Flipster. Its just stuck!
Sad really
-
I was christened Christopher and am known by my Christian name on several other genealogy sites. It seemed a logical way to get my name known as someone who has an interest in genealogy research.
-
my roots chat name derives from a very boring mehod - my first name & initial of my surname.
-
Its actually my husbands nicename from work plus it confuses people as to gender lol
Bart
-
:-X its a secret
-
As it could be :
Mr Al,
Mrs Al or
Al & Al
(nb. both born on the same day - which means we never forget each others Birthdays !), and you will never know who you are corresponding with !!
Happy hunting,
Al & Al
-
First initial of my christian name J as in (Jay) and first three letters of surname.
-
Ruth is one of those names that doesn't get shortened - just lengthened to Ruthie; add the initial of my middle name B - and that's me! ;)
-
My surname is pronounced (Okay, adopt your sexiest French accent) 'du Sharm', but a best friend calls me Mrs. Duck Charm.
It bugged the bee-geebers outta me, but now I like it. No problems with someone else having the same name. :)
Flipster: I had the nickname of 'Flipper' too! My first job was cooking breakfast at a large restaurant chain. Lots of egg flipping. :)
Kitch59: Happy Birthday tomorrow... er, on my time it's tomorrow. (Had to look at your profile to see ifin you were male or female. ;D) I'm older than you by 3 months. ;)
Fun thread, Tabitha!
Donna
Edited for post script: Tabitha... pretty picture, pretty lady, pretty smile. I bet people instantly like you when they meet you. :)

Julie is so common it had obviously gone so I started with Julie1965 - but soon got very bored by that. Sat for ages trying to think of something witty, mysterious yet strangely simple - that didn't work... so thought I'll chose the first thing I see....which was my lovley Welsh Springer Spaniel. His pet name wouldn't work so I went with his kennel name...which oddly enough means (cue Twighlight Zone music)
...'friendly ghost'....
PS: Female (jic)
PPS: Excellent topic!

Mine is carol because I'm a bit predictable and it's my name ..and sea for C , first letter of my second name but also because I love to be beside the sea. ( I feel a song coming on....)
Carol ;D

Maybe, just maybe...someone can guess how I chose my name!!!
Love the topic

What a great topic! I've just had lots of fun looking up some familiar names.
I'm piedstilt because the logo of our publishing company was a pied stilt. (It turned out to be quite a bad choice because not only did it have really long legs and the whole thing wouldn't fit on the spine of the book, but it turned out that nobody knew how to draw its feet and it ended up being depicted standing in water.)
I used it first in an online competition with a bunch of other publishers and so I've continued using it ever since.
Ros

That's great, Pied Stilt - yours was one I would never have guessed. So is a pied stilt a bird of some kind? Excuse pom ignorance here!

I am english, but I have been living in Berlin for nearly 33 years, mainly within a german-speaking environment !
There are so many Bobs on most boards, that I decided to be Berlin-Bob, on the grounds that that it would be unlikely to find another family history enthusiast in Berlin, called Bob, who is also on RootsChat and (was on) GenesReunited and ScotlandsPeople (before that forum folded).
And nobody has said "Snap !" yet ;D
piedstilt asked in another posting:
PS On a personal note, I'm intrigued to know why you are Berlin? You don't sound very German!
I am glad she said I don't sound very german. I met my (future) wife here in Berlin. She is scottish, and my english had deteriorated so much by then, that when we went to visit, her Mum said to her,
"his english is very good for a foreigner"
I now speak almost normal english again, and that, by the way, is something else I can thank you to RootsChat for - joining in the various discussions has done wonders for my english !
-
Now why did I choose this name??
Too obvious really, when I started I was one. ;D
Newbie
-
Good to know, Bob - your English seems fine to me!
And yes, Paul, it's a seashore-type wading bird - pied, because our one is black and white.
I did think the pseudonym really should have been used by my husband, who's very tall - and occasionally pied ...
Ros

Ros
I have often wondered what your Rootschat name meant - now I know. Thanks for the explanation!!
Jan
-
Well I'm a bird too, it's a user name I often use
Bob
-
Quite by coincidence I was emailed a photo of a pied stilt this week, so now you can see what I'm talking about. Hope this works. If there is a great big blank, you'll know it didn't. If it does, you'll see why NOBODY knows what its feet look like.
Stonechat. Your turn to post a pic of a stone bird or a chat bird. Awaited eagerly.

Fame at last!!!! ;D ;D

I googled my name and up came two children with a cow :o :o :o
margaret ;)
-
Hey, I gave you a go - and there really ARE two children and a cow! Are they yours? Looks very NZ to me (or possibly Oz?). I'm an old Waikato girl and I can pick a jersey a mile off.
A bit spooky though. I tried me and - apart from a very nice photo of a pied stilt INCLUDING feet - I found a reference to another site I use this name on, which took me through to a closed site obviously promoting dvds, which told me I did not have access. I have since written to the first site complaining bitterly ...
An interesting exercise.
Cheers,

There are many cows where I live - but I don't recognize that one - I wonder if it is an A2 Jersey?
Only one child and he is 13.
A sharp peck should take care of the shadey dvd dealers. ;D

Great topic Tabitha
Grothenwell was the surname of my GGG grandad.
The name died with his three daughters and I can't find the name used before then.
So it's my way of keeping his name alive in some small way.
Anyone ever hears of another Grothenwell please let me know.
Thanks,

I never could understand why the preoccupation with all the 'noms de keyboard'.....................
Two reasons occur to me:
1) A lot has to do with "uses and abuses" of chatrooms, mailing lists, forums, etc.
Many feel that, the less you say about your "real" you, the better !
YES, the RootsChatters are (in general) a friendly, kind, helpful bunch of people who wouldn't abuse any information offered here. But can you say that of every "Guest" who looks through all kinds of Internet discussion boards ??
This is also the reason why we delete e-mail addresse: not just because of the spam robots, that trawl the internet looking for them, but also to protect against persons who "spy out" e-mail addresses for abusive purposes.
It is also why we don't encourage the e-mail address as user name.
And also why we delete references in postings that provide information about living persons.
I don't want to sound paranoic, but it is a fact that just as the Internet has made lots of new possibilities for useful, peaceful purposes available, it has also made just as many possibilities available for the "nasty" people out there.
2) Ever been been fed up with plain, boring old you ??
Then think of a new name, and invent a personality to go with it ...... etc, etc.
There is a lot of this about too !!
Sorry, Cas, you got me on my soapbox again ! ;D
Bob
-
No probs - soapboxes are fine as long as your opinion is the same as mine 8)
Agree with you 100% regarding age - only dawned on me recently as heaps of credit card/bank/companies use date of birth as proof of identity on the phone ???
Also - did agree with you about spam until about a month ago; I was getting more and more up to about 80-100 spam messages a night until a few months ago and now it has all dried up (not that I'm complaining :))
In 10 years I have found virtually all message boards and usergroups fine with no flaming, though I think a large part of that has been luck and that I have only joined groups I have had a very specific interest in - the more esoteric the board the nicer the people and the lower chance of some idiot looking to cause trouble causing it. Funnily enough, the group with the most acrimonious exchanges has been a discussion group of Australian Psychiatrists....
(actually a few examples of silly people do come to mind now I think of it....)
And,no, I've never been fed up with plain old me - I'm just.........me
cheers
Cas
PS: Speaking of trolls on message boards I'll post a link in the 'even lighter side so go see............................

I already use the 'handle' in a few other forums, the first being a martial arts board.
It comes from my (not very successful) career on the pro kickboxing circuit.
Retired last year for more sedate pursuits!

Hey, and there was I thinking it was something to do with 'Lord of the Rings' ;D

I chose mine years ago for another message board.

Because I am a Man of Kent, as opposed to a Kentish Man.

Man of Kent,
Is that still a significant boundary marker? Do the young people of Kent still distinguish themselves by which side of the Medway they were born? Or dothey all hail from Kent these days?
RuthieB

Yes still apply's though not a big deal.

I always use this name in all Forums I frequent.
It is because I live in the Cotswolds
-
Hi all I used the KISS method KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!!!
Thought I was being so clever "hiding" behind my boys name. Ok I'll come out. I am a female.
My nick names as a child were most unappealing. (Mulley Grubs and Maggots) from Muller and Dale Dale Big fat whale. (I was 5 stone ringing wet.!!!!
Then a few years ago they had a childrens program on TV named you guessed it Mulley Grugs. Bought back a lot of bad memories.
I scanned all the credits to see if someone was taking the mickey, but could not see any familiar names, otherwise their ears would still be ringing. Cn any one top that for nick names???????
-
Ancient original CB handle - use it everywhere where certain amount of anonimity prefered.
Of course, though, everybody probably knows who I am by now!!!
Watermusic
-
That was a good idea Watermusic, never thought to use my old C.B. handle ;D.
I just used the name of one of my parrots he is called Toad, because he has froggy legs as he had a calcium deficiency when he was hatched.
At least my failing brain can remember something simple like that ::)
-
As my first name is Alma I tried to log on as Al but that was taken. So as my second name is Valerie I took the Al and added it to Val. Not rocket science really.
-
Because it was one I could not possibly forget !!
-
Because it is a name from which anyone who knows me and where I live would immediately recognise as mine, but is otherwise completely anonymous.
-
hi all, well i've been watching this topic for a while,
are'nt rootschatters an inventive lot as regards user names?
mine is just so obvious,my maternal grandfather was born in wales,
so when a cousin of mine (email pal)told me what the welsh words were
for granddad and grandma i decided as the welsh grandad and his origins
not to mention the stories i heard about him over the years were the start
of my 'rellie' quest that i would use taid as my user name.
anne
-
Just as a by-the-by; in the part of Wales where I live, Gran and Grandad are Mamgu and Tadcu - but my Dad taught me to say Nain and Taid!!
RuthieB

My choice is two fold-
1. "Northern_rose" is a line from a favourite Beautiful South song.
2. I am an northern girl and proud of it! (Not sure about a rose though!!)
-
Easy tried a few and found them all already taken so i used the name Liz RR the RR is for Rhodesian Ridgebacks My dogs.
-
Taffy - coz I'm Welsh
Blue - coz I'm a Southend Utd fan (they play in blue!)
-
I just logged on, thinking "another site that I probably won't use much" - so I picked a family surname and have regretted it ever since - You all have fabulous witty names. Wheeldon isn't even my surname!
How wrong was I? I'm a rootschat addict and I love this site! Berlin Bob did give me some v helpful advise on how to change my user name but I've kinda got used to it and it's stuck - a bit like you first name really. Also, strugglin to find a knock out user name!
-
It is another "nickname" that I seem to have collected for my self over the years (only this one can be repeated in front of maiden aunts and at the vicar's tea party). Given to me by someone years ago who came up with it as he said that I reminded him of Charles II. Great I thought he must be able to see that from this 'umble being there is an air of regal standing and pose about me, that is until he told me that Charlie boy had been landed with the name due to a race horse that he owned at the time called "Old Rowley" who had been put out to stud and had been very successful (same as Chas when you come to think of it), and he thought that as I was the father of seven kids it was appropriate.......ah well so is life.........pssssst anyone know of a good orange seller.
-
I chose to go use my maiden name in the hopes that anyone who remembers me from the mists of time or is researching the McGurn name would get in touch. :)
Not had any success with anyone who new me before 1964 :( but have had a couple of bites from the genealogy aspect. :)
Great to know whose who. Bit like putting faces to names really.
Jean

My brother had a bit of a speech problem when he was little,as a result he couldn't pronounce my nickname which was Lindy Lou.He would insist that I was called NinkyNoo.I was therefore called Ninky all my childhood.Since my parents passed away I have missed being called Ninky,so thought it would bring back very happy memories to reclaim my nickname and so it has!!!

I never cashed my beans - the scheme folded and I never even learned how to spell my password Maybe that's why I had trouble accessing some of the sites I visited!!!!

Well, my surname courtesey of my husband is McClean, and we have 2 sons whose nicknames all through school and college have been "BigBitty" and "Bitty" aka the rap singer Bitty McLean - so I'm "bittymatriarch".
When I do the banking for my husband, the girls in the NatWest all ask me how Bitty is [he's in Oz for a year] as they were at school with my younger son!

Hello all,
I took 'North Country Boy' name from a track by The Charlatans, one of my fave bands. It's also a nickname I got called :-\ at college in London when the track was out as a single back in 1997 (I'm originally from Hull :)). The nickname didn't really stick though

Who as the most unusual source of user name, mine Bodger, was a name given to me as an apprentice, in those days, 1950/5, i had a crew cut, and in the Daily Mail (i think), there was a cartoon family created by Wally Faulkes who was also clarinetist with the Humprey Lyttleton band, the cartoon family were the "Trogdelytes", one of the family had a crew cut and looked similar to me, so hence my nickname, by the way where does the word, nickname come from ?.

Hi Bodger
Your nickname has a long and honourable past!
Bodgers were the country woodsmen who made chairs and various other thingsfrom greenwood straight from the forrest.
Russell

Bodger
There was an old English word "eke" which meant "also". Used in Chaucer c 1400. So when people were given other names it was "an eke name". After time, it became "a neke name" - and in time "a nick name".

I chose mine because I couldn't think of anything imaginative at the time.
Andrew

hi everyone,
Sorry to be a bore, but I seem to have little imagination, so I just chose my first two initials. 'Caroline W'. I cannot divulge my second name, my mum thinks it's a lovely name but unfortunately I am unable to share her enthusiasm :'(
My children are also sworn to secrecy about my name, although sometimes they think it hilarious to announce it when I least expect it :-[
ooh, a guessing game. Winifred?

Or Wilhelmina ;D
Steph.

I'm occasionally known by a very few friends as Ellie and my husband is Bob - easy. I hope to find out as much as possible about both families so I can give my daughters and grandchildren as much of a sense of their place in the world as I can.
Still always sign my posts though as

I use my real name because I am totally opposed to the use of pseudonyms on the internet.
If everyone had to use their real name spam would dissapear because it could be traced back to source and action taken.
I apologise if this hurts anyone but I feel that everyone who uses a pseudonym or other form of anonymity on the internet is actually aiding spammers.
Cheers
Guy
-
I see your point, Guy, but it's easier to do that when you're called Guy Etchells than Elizabeth Phillips. Fox-Davies Armorial Families says there are 116000 totally separate Phillips families in the US alone - let alone how many there are in the UK. Those who want to spam us will do so with false names, just as there are "bad" people out there who will always think up new ways to try to steal our money. Having to use real names may also deter some perfectly genuine people from using this and other sites, who wish to protect their privacy.

This topic has been going for so long thought I'd keep it going. I chose Cazza cos it's a play on my name plus I live in Australia where everything that moves gets a nickname!!

Just a stupid question, but how many posts to you have to do before you become a "Roots Member"??????

WOW. What interesting reading this has been! I should have come here ages ago. What could one say to top the great names and comments in these posts? Answer; "Nuffin at all".
Robert and Karon are our names. As we choose not to live in fear, we use our names unashamedly.
In the chat room we choose Aussie Karrob. Why? First and foremost we are proudly Australian. Then we have combined the first parts of our Christian names.
-
Another new boy here, this is the best topic I have browsed so far. (Far more interesting than finding our ancestors)!! I started with Graham in Reading because that's exactly who I am and what I'm signed up as on another forum.
But that's boring compared with the rest of you. Like someone said earlier in the thread, pick a new identity and invent a life. Well, I'll see how I go, but for now I'll play safe-ish and change it to Captain, which has been my nickname for 30 years.
Lots of us called Graham, and I was always the one who organised the annual canal holiday, so....
Next week I might be someone different again.
Graham aka Captain

Pretty boring explanation!
Always used my uni login details so that when going back to a site would remember the username! It was only 4 characters long and one site suggested "gtd005" last year to make it up to the 6 required for that site. Since then used this as my default username.

Mine's boring too - couldn't wait to get going, no time to think of something witty!

sula_nebouxii is a name I have used online for years. It is the scientific name for the blue footed booby, which I adopted as a mascot after the comment "That looks like you dancing!"

I am named after my never-to-be-forgotten dog, a silver-coloured larger than usual Yorkie with attitude. I was told we looked alike because I have a silver mop on top too.
Which I suppose begs the question how did he get his name - we chose it while playing a family game of - Scrabble!

My name(Carol) and my DOB ........simple,like me ;D ;D ;D

When I was little I could not pronounce my name. so I called myself Peep. It has always been my family name. Patricia.

I tried unsuccessfully to have the name that I wanted - but to no avail. In frustration, after many attempts, I gave up and decided on Cornishpasty as my ancestors were from Cornwall, even though I am an Aussie. I love it anyway. It was meant to be HOOROO everyone.

XPhile - someone who likes the X Files
286 - February '86, my month and year of birth
8 - A random number - I originally used XPhile286, but for now forgotten reason I put an 8 on the end.

Goodness knows why I chose Emmeline - so many letters for people to type ::)
Still, I was checking on an ancestor that day - Clarice Emmeline - so I guess that is what prompted it and it is a pretty name I think - nicer than my own ::) ::)

Have just read all 17 brilliant pages of this when I'm sure I should have been doing something much more trivial!
I was very clever, Ecneps is my surname backwards, thought it sounded better than my first name backwards, not so sure now, and almost always sign Barbara anyway ::)

I wanted anonymity and remembered a Willemina Roberta somewhere back in my past, and decided that was tooooo long so I looked at shortening Willemina to Bill and Roberta to Bob got BillBob but that didnt work so added the "Y" out of the middle of my real name and ended up with billybob. Which is not bad considering my real names, 1st and surname both begin with B, and wanted to get away from the old nicknames from my childhood BugsBunny Bridget B etc. then to throw more confusion into the pot posted my picture.

Mines pretty obvious to Beanie Baby collectors. My kids used to collect them , but lost interest when TY produced so many. Their pocket money only stretched so far.

When I was in junior school I had to recount the story of Moses and the tablets of stone.
I innocently said that he'd dropped his PILLS and smashed them. Ive been known as
