Hi. I'm trying to locate an Edwin Robert Miles who I believe was born in Cambridge just before 1900. He married a Margaret C. Day in Battersea London who I believe came from Clapham and they had four children - Cordelia Minnie, Kathleen and Elsa Dora Margaret and one unknown name.
I believe he was a signwriter.
Anyone looking at this family who can provide some info?

At the moment it is possible to search all BMDs free on www.ancestry.co.uk. Choose the Beta version. You should be able to find his birth on that and his marriage too.
In 1891 there is a James and Sarah Miles living in Cambridge who have children called Edwin and Cordelia so I suspect you may get back to them eventually. Keep them in mind. RG12 1284 F 160 p5

I think he will be the one I found in 1891. In 1901 he is still with his parents and his occupation is "ticket writer". I suupose he might have become a signwriter later but his birth is well out from the original estimate if it is him. When did your ancestor die? How old was he then? I think you need to work back from known facts.

Many thanks all, I have now managed to tie this chap down. I was confused with two people with the same name. A common problem for us all.

hi...margaret was my mother and sally her sister....ring any bells...edwin was my great grandfather...i have a painting by him dated 1898so maybe he was born 15 to 18 years before...i've spoken to a 'cousin' (to your mother, my grandmother 'peggy' and aunty jo , iris ,in florida who said that his wife was called margaret batty and came from brighton....iris is her niece...sally has more details...sally and i wanted to know where edwin came from...there are a lot of different and strange stories surrounding him.

We seem to be looking at the same family, although I'm a little confused (doesn't take much!).
I am connected to Cordellia Minnie S. Day. Cordellia's father was Edwin Robert Miles.
So, if I understand correctly, you are descended from George Wheable and Elsie Dora Margaret Miles?
I have a fair bit more about Edwin Miles, but not much about the Wheable side.
I'd love to exchange more info and if possible have a scan of the painting of Edwin.
