Title: Sykes the shoe repairers
Post by: bradley44 on Tuesday 11 April 06 15:41 BST (UK)
Does anyone know of or remember a shoe repairer in Toronto by the name of Herbert Sykes between 1929 and 1941? His wife was named Elizabeth.
Addresses I have from directories are
54 Balsam Avenue
116 Glenmanor Drive
2192 Queen e
133 Willow Av

Do these places still exist? If so could someone kindly photograph them for me?
Or better still does anyone remember them at all and know what may have become of them, and very importantly did they have any children? I could well have cousins out there I know nothing about.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this I can only hope I may be lucky
Chris

Hi Chris,

If it helps at all, these addresses are all located in the East End of the City, "The Beaches".  There are alot of old homes there, so the chances are good that they still exist.

Wonder if  these are the ancestors, as many of these were shoemakers,
and list some coming to the U.S. and then to Canada...to Toronto!
One never knows where a connection can be made...

Many thanks Karen, hopefully I may one day get to see the very houses my great uncle lived in if you think they are probably still standing.

And many thanks JJ for your reply, I have a copy of the immigration papers for this couple, they arrived in Canada in 1924 initially to Montreal and later were to be found in Toronto. They were the only ones from this family to move from England to Canada. Herbert was from Sheffield and Elizabeth from Leeds, both these cities are in Yorkshire, if any of this info brings anything to mind as to what may have become of them once they were in Canada

Thank you for both your replies. Christine

Hi Christine,

My husband's uncle was a Sykes who's family was from Toronto.   I have asked his Aunt, but the names were not familiar to her.  She did say that there was a shoemaker that had been there for 3 generations (close to her house) and next time she went by she thought she would go and ask if they new of Herbert.  Will let you know if I find anything out.

JJ, I just checked out the site you posted.  Interesting the Sykes were in Newmarket as well, which is where hubby's family is from.

Random acts of genealogical kindness do photographs...but not sure
if they will charge for gas or not...up to the person you talk to, usually...

Sorry couldn't be of help!  Just having this on a popular site such as
this might just get you some answers one day, though...so best
of luck! Hope Karen can find some info for you on the family.
She's a super-sleuth!

Oh and welcome to rootschat!

Hi Karen,
Many thanks for your reply, I would be very grateful if your aunt would make some enquiries for me, it's not easy from long distance.........
I am not sure where Herbert & Elizabeth went after 1941 as they disappear from the trade directories, I do know that was the year he was discharged from the navy and his posting at that time was in Kingston so did they stay in the Kingston area? who knows?
Christine

Hi J.J.
Thanks for the info on the photograph site, I will look into that one, better still I come over and do it myself but unfortunately not possible just at the moment but high on my list of things to do.

Hi Christine,

Something you might want to try in the meantime is www.pagesofthepast.ca . This site has digitized copies of every page of the Toronto Star since 1901.  There is a charge, but you can subscribe for as little as an hour at a time and it is quite reasonable.  I got a ton of hits for Herbert Sykes when I did a quick search, including some from the classified section so you might find some ads or something.

Happy hunting!
