Esau Wayman was buried in Willingham on 12 April 1820 aged 80. He was therefore born about 1733. He had married a Mary who was buried in Willingham on 12 Jan 1814 aged 86, therfore born about 1728. I have seen the record of Esy Wayman marry Mary Walby on 18 May 1762 in Chartteris and would like this to be them. Can anyone possibly confirm it is them? If so, who were their parents?

Hi Simon,
On the transcribed CFHS disc for Chatteris, both the Banns and the marriage of Esy and Mary the surname was spelt as WAMAN. This spelling continued to the birth of a daughter called Viney baptised 14 February 1763.

I think this needs a fair bit of work to show that the Mary and Esau buried in Willingham are the same as the Mary & Esau who married in Chatteris.
The same CD that Frances mentions has no baptisms for either of them in Chatteris. The fact that they had only one child implies that they may have moved away and had more - unless one of them died, but there's no burial in Chatteris. What do you know about other children? The Cambs FHS site has a number of Wayman burials in Willingham which need to be checked out.
Willingham baptisms and marriages have been extracted onto the IGI, but there are no earlier baptisms - but there is a marriage of Viney Wayman there in 1787, which adds weight to it being the same Esau and Mary.
I don't think there's an easy answer to this one - it may come down eventually to being an "on the balance of probabilities" type deduction.
Doesn't help you at all with their parents though

Thanks David, Frances. I just imagined that Esau Wayman and Viney Wayman were such unusual names that the records in Chartteris and Willingham must refer to the same people. I might continue to imagine that so long as I remember that there is only a bit of evidence to support it.

13th December 1772 Susannah dau of Esau & Mary Wayman.
6th October 1776 William son of Esau & Mary.Wayman.
Burial at Willingham:
4th August 1770 Susannah dau of Easy & Mary.
Marriage of a William Wayman to a Mary Japes 15th Feb 1795.

Could find no baptism for a Vine / Viny at Willingham.

I didn't know about a first Susannah who was born and died before the second one - the sister of my ancestor William. Thanks for the information.
