Title: Castleton name interests
Post by: kena on Thursday 20 April 06 21:08 BST (UK)
Hi, I have Beattie's from Castleton and Elliot's from Castleton (especially concerning the name Matthew Elliot). Would be very interested in hearing from anyone with the same name interests.

Thanks

Anna

Hi there,

I too have Elliots in Castleton - but no Matthews yet.  I have some other contacts who are also researching the name.  If you PM me, we can maybe see if there is a connection.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare & Anna,
I have a Jean Elliot married to a Simon Jackson in Castleton. Their son James 1799, Castleton was my GGG Grandfather. I suppose that means she is my GGGG Grandmother. I have not yet identified which Jean she is as I think there could  be one or two of them that are possibles. By my reckoning she could probably be born around 1768.

Looking at the the IGI her parents could be James Elliot & Elizabeth Telfor(d) or Adam Elliot & Elizabeth.

I have not yet had time to research the Elliot side but would be interested if either of you have a Jean in your family tree.

Hi Judy, Thanks very much for leaving the message on the topic, unfortunately I haven't got any Jean Elliot's in my familytree, I think I have got back to about the 1750's/1760's maybe as well as my Matthew Elliot's (my five times greatgrandfather) first kid was baptised in Castleton in 1782 as far as I know.

Thanks for sending this.
I now seem to have two James Jackson's from Castleton to choose to be the father of my Charters Jackson.
First James Jackson born 1799 parents Jane & Simon Jackson who, when I look at his death Cert was single when he died at the age of 72. This one has the father Simon & Jane Jackson from Hardon.
On his death certificate it says the Informant of death was 'John Elliot' Son-in-law. Can anyone tell me what son-in-law meant.
the other is on the IGI is
James Jackson married to a Margaret Scott - father Simon Jackson & mother Jean Elliot.

I am confused so I think a trip to the records office is called for!

Hi Audrey,
Have now got proof that my James Jackson's father was Simon Jackson and his mother Jane Elliot. They are 4xG Grandparents to me. So we must be related in some distant way. Can you tell me a little more about your connections with Simon Jackson & Jean Elliot where they figure in your tree?

Hi Audrey,
Just to try & get where your Adam fits in.

Was your Adam Jackson 1763 a brother of my Simon Jackson as I have no other relatives of Simon as yet.
If he was have you got other information as to who their parents were?
Dare I ask - why was he called Hunter King of Liddesdale?

Hi Audrey,
Thankyou very much for the information.
I have looked on the IGI & on SP but can find nothing of William & Ester. Did you find them at the records office in person and have you any reference  to them as I would at some time probably like a copy of the original entry and it would be easier to find if I know where!!!

Thanks

Agnes MURRAY, born about 1797-1800
Thomas ARMSTRONG, born about 1794.
Apparently both from Castleton; not sure if they married in Scotland or Canada, but probably Scotland.
Married each other and moved to New Brunswick about 1819;  then moved to Westminster Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario, about 1836.

Looking for any clues.
