Title: hugh humphrey Evans Pontypool monmouth
Post by: sunnyg1rl05 on Saturday 22 April 06 16:37 BST (UK)

I received the birth Certificate for my hubbys grandad yesterday Donald archer Evans, i sort of guessed what his parents name would be as i found a marriage cert for a may meredith and Hugh humphrey evans for 1899 in bedwelty
now the problem i have is i have no information for Hugh Evans except for his occupation, on the birth cert it says he is a Dramatic artiste May registered the birth a month after Donald was born im guessing Hugh was away filming perhaps,  i cannot find Hugh on the census for 1891 or 1901 ( i think may had died by 1901) i believe donald had an older sister but they were both sent to live with different rellies when their mum died i just wanted to know what happened to hugh he may have remarried again in 1904.
ive tried searching for welsh actors but he may have used a different name
the address for them in 1900 was ashgrove cottage, george street, pontypool.

does anyone perhaps know of the actor.

thanking you
kaz

Hi Kaz

Can you fill in a few details please?

You believe the marriage took place in 1899 in Pontypool reg district?

Donald Archer EVANS appears to have been born in Mar q 1900 in Pontypool.

Have you found Donald and the sister (her name?) in 1901?

I can see a servant, May EVANS in George St in 1901, but she is unmarried. When do you think she died?

Curiously there is the birth and death of a Hugh Humphrey EVANS in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire in 1898 - possibly a red herring?

Anything more you can add would be helpful.  It looks as though the marriage cert would be a good investment.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

donald was visiting his grandmother sarah exton ( meredith) in longhope glous in 1901 and was brought up by her and her 2nd hubby
no one in the family know anything else, im the only one that knows who donalds parents are at the moment as i wanted to find out more info onthe evans side put everything in a folder and give it to my mother in law

i have found about 6 possible death indexes for may evans ranging from jul-sept 1900 to 1902  pontypool, pontypridd, llanelly

I have no onther info on hugh evans, so looks like i will have to  order cert and wait about a month for it to arrive lol

Morning Kaz!

Yes, I had another look without success - looks like we wil have to be patient & see what the marriage cert says.

Please let us know!

You can't tie the family you found in 1901 to yours - maybe an uncle or aunt??

Meanwhile, if you can think of anything else we can try, please ask.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Not very helpful, is it?

Hmm - who are the witnesses to the marriage?  can you place them?  What is the address for Donald's birth?  I know you have checked it, but I fancy a look too!  ;D

Giving it some more thought...

hiya,

The witness`s are Thomas John Buckley and Sarah Jones, have no idea who they are

The address for Donalds Birth is Ashgrove Cottage, George Street, Pontypool,

in 1901  he is visiting his grandmother (mays Mother) at gloucs she has remarried and is now Sarah Exton instead of meredith,

The wedding Cert doesnt say Mays day, Alfred Meredith is desceased i think he died in 1894, i found  a marriage index for sarah meredith and Archer exton in 1895

I have gone through the census in 1901 for oak street, i did find about 3 Evans but not matching names, unless they were relatives but not knowing who else was in the family, its proving difficult to add siblings and Hughs Mother

Hi Kaz

i think my great grandmother was May Evans wife of Hugh. i think i have my grandmothers birth certificate which show my grandmother Josephine May Evans daughter of Hugh Humphrey Evans (Actor) and May Evans (deceased). Registered birth in Easington (Shotton Colliery). My grandmother was adopted by a Frances Greener. my grandmothers marriage cert. shows her as being Josephine May E Greener and two of Josephine's sons had middle names as Evans which made me think that she may have been May and Hugh's daughter. Josephine was born in 1904 a month before May's death was registered. Not sure if you can shed any light on it as with he being adopted its hard to find out any information as Josephine dead when my mum was 13 i don't get to hear much of the history from that side of the family.

Im not sure if i am barking up the wrong tree. But delving back through our family history we have a Hugh Humphrey Evans (actor) and a May Evans "deceased" formally Meredith giving birth to a daughter Josephine May on  13 september 1904 in Sunderland Row, shotton colliery road. This information is from Josephines birth certificate, and to me seems very similar to dismiss. I dont know what everyones thoughts are around this, but thought id add to the pot.

Hi, I'm doing research for my cousins husband and his father was Donald Evans who was the son of Hugh Humphreys Davey Evans and May Evans nee Meredith. May Evans died on 16th Oct 1904 at Sunderland Row, Shotton Colliery, Easington, Durham. Cause of death - Confinement Zymotic Enteritis Synope, which sounds like it would have been an infection of some sort following or not long after childbirth. Donald was raised by his Grandmother Sarah Meredith nee Price who later married again to become Sarah Exton. Donald would have been aged 4 when his mother died and is possibly Josephine's brother?

I'm unsure where the Evans/Meredith are in our family tree, but am awaiting my nanna to speak to her cousins in Durham to ask as they were the ones that sent this i fo down. The route is through my nannas side and she was a Gill, her mum was Agnes Outhwait, and she (Agnes) married John William Gill.

Agnes was 8 when she lost her mum in child birth to her 8th child. So nanna dont know her grandmothers name, as she died when her mum was very young.

Agnes moved to North Yorkshire near selby to work. We have some of the family tree from 1600s but have not recieved the rest. But the copy of birth certificate for Josephine was in with this. But its been passed round family  before my nanna got it. So waiting on further information from them in the know in Durham.

Hi Emma, I think your Great Nan Agnes Outhwaite was the daughter of Lady Mary L Dixon who was married to William Fishwick Outhwaite. Lady Mary died in 1922 which would fit with Agnes being 8 years old. I’m still trying to find all 8 of Agnes siblings but have found that she had a brother Joseph William Outhwaite who was married to Josephine May Evans Greener. As Jo H has previously said Greener being her adopted surname. Hugh Evans & May Meredith were her biological parents. Donald Archer Evans (who is the father of my cousins husband) was Josephine’s brother and was brought up by his Grandmother Sarah Meredith who was May’s mother. Back to your Great Nan Agnes, she is Josephine’s sister in law, and so that makes her my cousins husband’s Aunt’s sister in law.

I cant wait to  visit my nanna and tell her what ive found out, as she wanted to know where every one fitted in.

Agnes had 2 daughters and 2 sons. John Arthur, Marjorie May, Joan M (want to say marlene but not 100% sure) And Dennis.

It would be nice to chat if anyone related wants to. Im on facebook

Agnes's other siblings were Mary ann Outhwaite Who married Tomas Hauson.

Samual Outhwaite who married Jennifer.

James Outhwaite (no other info)

Thomasina Outhwaite who married Sydney Thompson

John aka Jim (no fourthe info)

And a baby girl who was adopted after Lady Mary Fishwick Dixon died, in child birth. This baby girl was adopted by some aunty. But any other info unknown.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Hello all,

I've just joined this forum after finding this thread via Google, based on some of the names mentioned. I carried out some research years ago & I need to dig it out the details, but Lady Mary Louisa & William Fishwick Outhwaite were my Great Grandparents & Joseph William & Josephine May Outhwaite were my Grandparents.

@ Jo H: Does this make us first cousins? :-)

Among my archives, I have the certificate from the King about Grandad Joe's death in WW2 & various 'photos including one of William Fishwick Outhwaite in middle age.

My mum (deceased) told me that Josephine May told her shortly before she died (1963?) that she had been adopted as a child. Her adoptive mother (Frances Greener) survived her into my childhood (we called her Ma-ma) & died aged 96 years, in the mid 70s I think. I was told Ma-ma never wanted to talk about the 'old days' & so wasn't asked to confirm the adoption by my family when I was young. In any case, she suffered deafness & dementia towards the end of her life.

My father and two of his three brothers had the middle name Evans. Around 2000 I obtained Josephine May's birth cert, which confirmed the Evans connection.

I corresponded briefly with my (Great) Auntie Agnes (Outhwaite/Gill) shortly before she died.

I haven't been active with Family History since then & the notes & archives are all in store, so the above is entirely out of my head, but I'll dig it out when I next have chance (in a few weeks) to look through.

Hi Dave

My Uncles are Owthwaite my mum was born to Josephine's second husband Herbert Adams. I guess this would make us cousins somewhere down the line.
I would love to see any photos you have as i don't have many with my mum only being half sister to the brothers and my grandparents dying before i was born.
I'm still not finding any information about Hugh Evans though not sure what happened to him after May died or before for that matter?

Hi Jo-Ann, I just saw your reply as I had given up checking regularly a while ago to see if anyone had posted one!

I didn't know my Dad had a half-sister, but my eldest sister Sandra might know of your mum & I'll ask her (via Facebook as we are geographically apart).

I shall check for photos of Nana Adams & will post again with my findings ...

Best wishes

Dave

Hi again Jo-Ann, my sister Sandra does remember your mum & they seem to have got on well, although they lost touch before you were born Sandra says & she didn't know about you.

Josephine May was adopted as mentioned in earlier posts by my Ma-ma & her then husband Bam - their surname was Greener. From memory, the name of your maternal Grandmother at the time of her marriage to Grandad Joe was Josephine May Evans Greener.

Ma-ma was old when I knew her - she died aged 96 years & was living then in a care home in Carcroft, the mining village in which I grew up. Sandra interviewed her about family history in the 60s & 70s but Ma-ma was cagey & denied the fact that Josephine May was adopted - possibly we think because this would mean Ma-ma wasn't related to us by blood & we were the main family looking after her at the time. Ma-ma was also rather confused generally when I knew her too.

I think there is a bit of 8mm movie film from a school gala in 1963 with Nana Adams appearing briefly, but it may take a while to check as I'll have to locate both the film & a projector with which to view it!

Best wishes,

Dave

Hi sorry to hi Jack the thread, its been a while since I looked at the family tree, and on here to be honest... just wish I could turn the clock back and tell my mother in law that her dad did have a sister, I must of missed Josephines birth entry at the time ...
Sadly my husband  ( ex as we were separated but not gone thru divorce) passed away 18 months ago,  he would have been interested to hear this..
If anyone would like to keep in touch I would be  delighted.
