Title: Victoria look up please
Post by: Cougar on Tuesday 02 May 06 10:26 BST (UK)
Hi, is there anyone who could possibly look up the details of

Footscray, Victoria, Aust, ref 29083 in 1916
Birth of Daphne Alice Stanley
The parents listed are Chas Jno Stanley and Mary Elizabeth Williams - which should read Whillance........
I would love the exact date of birth and if a marriage or death could be found - that would be gold...........
Thanks

Hi Cougar,

You can research the Victorian BDM index yourself at:

http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/IdxSearch?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria

It won't cost you anything to search and it's only $0.99 to view each page of results.

You can download an uncertified record of an event directly to your computer for $17.50 if you have the registration number and year.  It's the same cost if you order an official certificate to be posted out.

Cheers, Brisgirl

Hi Cougar, I checked my Vic discs and I can't see a death for a Daphne or Daphne Alice (any surname) with those parents up to and including 1985.

Drat - another of those mysterious Stanleys of mine.
So if no death with Daphne / Daphne Alice with an alternative surname - wonder if that means she moved interstate or like her ggggrandfather - just appeared, or in this case, disappeared into thin air.
Thank you so much for that - might have to widen my search.
I know she was put in an orphange as an infant (but they have no confirming paperwork) - so possibility I suppose that she had a name change, although her brothers didn't.
Again, many thanks for your time and effort.

Hi Jenn
Have been in touch with the orphanage - no parents recorded for the child we think is Daphne Alice Stanley b 1916 in Footscray, Vic. which is why I need her full date of birth.
Have got the boys - because of the 100 year rule, only information regarding the elder, but do have the names of the three of them - so they are OK -
May Elizabeth Caroline is a sister and no idea what became of her or her siblings, I have not been able to discover.
Their mother died in 24 Dec 1916 which could have been childbirth related if Daphne was born 4 Dec 1916 - but this needs to be confirmed.
The first three boys all born Orbost, ie Charles Robert, (orphanage)
Laurence Arthur (born & Died 1907), Lindsay or Leonard (orphanage)(depending on which record) but no further details aside from their births.
The two girls  born Footscray and Walter (orphanage) born Newport on the 7 May 1911.
Needless to say all help is gratefully received.
Cheers, Cougar

Hi again Jenn
Yep - think I am going to have to order it - was hoping someone could access them without going to the expense....... pensions don't always stretch as far as we would like them to........ but never mind.
The boys were in the St Augustine's Orphanage and Daphne was in Broadmeadows - they both come under the McKillop foundation - and they have been most helpful.   Well, as far as they can under the 100 year rule.

I have the birth cert of someone who was adopted in the early 1900's indexed under the original surname, as you have, but the copy of the entry had the name change notated on it.

No, Jenn - hadn't seen that - you little beauty.
Are you able to give me details please?  That would be great.

Hi Genni - this is getting confusing - Jenn & Genni - thanks for that info - I don't know if she was adopted or not as her father was still alive, only her mother passed away.
Father went off to war - no idea why he would have enlisted when he had all those children to care for - or perhaps that is why - who knows...... also at this stage no idea if the children returned to him when he returned.
Think I will have to send for the certificate - at least that will hopefully solve some problems.
Interesting that the name change was on that certificate - how the rules/laws change over the years is amazing - I always think of adoptee's being in the name of the adoptive parents.
Thanks for your help and info

Hi Jenn
That figures, my family has been slowly expanding - and I do mean slowly.............. I have discovered so many of my grandfather's siblings that were totally unknown to our section of the family -  he was 'kicked out' of the family for marrying out of his religion........ evidently back then if you were 'kicked out' you never returned, nor spoke of your brothers or sisters.............amazing - I always thought families back then were tight knit communities - obviously not.    Just shows, never too old to learn something new.
Thanks again for your help

Hi Cougar

Are you aware Charles Robert Stanley (service no: 1160) enlisted in the Armed Forces - NOK listed as Trevor STANLEY.

Regarding adoptions records they are sealed.  You may have trouble obtaining the record if you request via mail.  When they did the indexes, I don't think they thought about adoptions.

Hi
This family is so confusing - are you saying that Charles Robert enlisted as Trevor????
How on earth did you manage to discover that........
mind you - one of his uncles was David Henry Orbell and ended up as John - so I really shouldn't be surprised.
My goodness - no wonder I can't find any of the so and so's.
Cheers and many thanks,
Cougs

Post by: Cougar on Thursday 04 May 06 23:56 BST (UK)
Hi Jenn
Glad I am not the only one who couldn't find him there - thought I was going potty.
Was trying to order digitised copy and it gave me the reading room to view it - in person, of course.
Might have to send them an email and see if they can digitise seems it is already open access.
See I misread Genni's note - Trevor was next of kin for Charles but as you found out Charles wasn't married until 1933 - I now have to go hunt and seek and find out who Trevor is - would have thought he would still have been a child and too young to be listed as NOK.
If nothing else - this family keeps me occupied...........

Hi Cougar,
When I look at

http://www.necropolis.com.au/mainindex.htm

I can see some male Stanley's of right given name possibilities.Lindsay, Leonard, Arthur. Dates not clear/right.
The Walter James (d.1997), however, does have right age for your birth date for him.  Was James a middle name?

Hi Sue
Pity they don't all have date of birth isn't it........... would be so much easier to identify, but this gives me something to go on.
Didn't know about this site - so thank you so much for that.
Will slowly but surely check all the Stanleys listed there and see who, or how many fit.

Hallo Di
No - still haven't found David.......... from 1840 until the present day I am fine - found tons and tons of g.uncles and g.aunts that our bit of the family knew nothing about - but as for his birth and where he went in those first few years - still a blank.
Coming over in June to go look for myself - any excuse for a holiday.......... so look out Coventry - will be searching the records there left, right and centre.

Hi Cougar
I noticed you mentioned St Augustine's Orphanage....Just wonderinig if you know where it used to be because I know where it is as I have other family members that were there.
It was in Geelong, just like me :D

Hi
I eventually tracked down where the records were kept.
Managed to get details of one child, but the rest are still under the ** 100 year rule.
No - don't know where it was - will be in Pt Lonsdale next month, so if you can let me know - will go and have a look.
Woops - just re-read that - when you say, used to be - gather it is no longer there?  How did you get on trying to find info on your lot?
Thanks for that
Cougar

I haven't actually started looking into that yet, I only found out where the orphanage was from my Grandmother, I think she remembers where it was and I'll find out a street name off her and find out if it's still standing. I have a suspicion the building may still be there but being used for something else - will let you know asap.

Hi
If you send me a personal message with your email address I will send you the contact person for the orphanage.
It now comes under the Mary McKillop Foundation - took me ages to find that out.
Because of the 100 year rule you will need to be able to prove direct descendancy to get any information, but they will explain what is required.
Good luck, and thanks for finding out about where it was.
Await reply,
Cheers Cougar
